Casey Details Threats to Iraq, Progress to Combat ThemBy Jim Garamone, American Forces Press Service |
| WASHINGTON, Aug. 30, 2006 – The primary threats to Iraq's security are terrorists and death squads, the coalition commander in the country said today, and both must be addressed if Iraq is going to progress. Army Gen. George W. Casey Jr. said the Iraqi people “aren't going to have the security that they want until the Iraqi security forces are the primary and dominant providers of security in the country. That won't happen until all militias and insurgents are disbanded.” |
MND-B Soldiers expel terrorists from Dora school
Multi-National Division – Baghdad PAO
BAGHDAD – Multi-National Division – Baghdad Soldiers seized a cache containing weapons and munitions Sunday evening in Dora, a muhalla in southern Baghdad, during Operation Together Forward, after receiving a tip from a concerned Iraqi citizen.
The tip led Soldiers from 1st Battalion, 14th Cavalry Regiment, 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, to a school where terrorists were hiding three rocket-propelled grenade rounds, three RPG launchers, five 60mm mortar rounds, a 60mm mortar tube, a 125mm rocket, two 107mm rocket, a PKC machinegun, multiple small-arms weapons with ammunition and various bomb-making materials.
Four male suspects were detained at the cache site.
Kidnapped Ramadi Police Employee Rescued by Iraqi Soldiers
REGIMENTAL COMBAT TEAM-5 PUBLIC AFFAIRS
CAMP FALLUJAH, Iraq – An employee of the Ramadi police was discovered in the trunk of a Black Daewoo Prince in Fallujah by Iraqi soldiers from the 1st Iraqi Army Division during a cordon-and-search operation Sunday, Aug. 27.
“The rescue of the Iraqi citizen during Sunday’s intelligence-driven counterinsurgency operation in Fallujah is a result of the dedication and professionalism of the soldiers of the 3rd Battalion, 2nd Brigade, 1st Division of the Iraqi Army,” said Marine Lt. Col. James Teeples, the senior military transition team advisor to 3-2-1. “From conception through execution, this was solely an Iraqi Army effort.”
As the soldiers conducted a vehicle check point, they spotted two insurgents abandon the Daewoo Prince and flee on foot. The soldiers subsequently approached the vehicle, and upon hearing screams and bangs emitting from the rear, opened the trunk. Inside they discovered the kidnapped Ramadi police employee, who had been bound by the insurgents.
The Iraqi man was extricated from the trunk, escorted to a Coalition forces post and then released.
Iraqi security forces capture bomb makerThe raid, conducted by Iraqi police with Coalition observers, occurred without incident and there were no civilian, Iraqi forces, or Coalition Force casualties
One additional individual was detained in this operation.
Local Iraqi police and Soldiers from the 8th Iraqi Army Division went out on patrol to check reports of people gathering in the Al Eufrat district at approximately midnight Sunday. At about the same time, several explosions and shooting could be heard in various parts of the city.
At approximately 2:00 a.m. today, Soldiers from 8th Iraqi Army Division reported they were being attacked on Salem Street in the Al Jumhuri district and on various streets in the Al Nahda district. The battles lasted throughout the morning.
Coalition forces provided support to the Iraqi Security Forces by setting up blocking positions at several points on the outskirts of Ad Diwaniyah to prevent additional terrorists from entering the city.
A Polish MI-24 helicopter providing support to the ISF was hit with seven rounds of small arms fire at approximately 1:00 p.m. but was able to safely land at a nearby Coalition base.Casualties are still being assessed. Enemy casualties are unknown at this time.
Additional information will be released as soon as it is available.

One of the biggest problems faced by those of us who campaign, week-in, week-out for the release of falsely-imprisoned U.S. Special Forces soldier Jack Idema and his compatriot Brent Bennett is the fact that mud sticks.
What this has meant for Jack and Brent is that the outright lies that they were guilty of kidnapping and torture have been repeated so often that many people assume there must be some truth behind the allegations. There isn’t.
The section of Jack’s counter-terrorist work, then, that has bearing on his arrest and the charges brought against him involved:
Let’s look at these in turn, weighing the credibility of Jack’s case against the claims made against him.
First, then, was Jack entitled to make arrests? The U.S. State Department and Karzai denied that this was the case, and, further, claimed Jack was never operating in an official capacity. However, if this was really the case, we need to ask ourselves how it is that Jack is able to provide ample photographic evidence to the contrary? Indeed, the attempts to deny Idema was involved in official counter-terrorism operations in Afghanistan begin to look more than a little shaky when you see pictures of him:
All of the above should, if nothing else, make the Karzai/State Department denial that Jack was working in an official capacity seem scarcely credible. And if that’s that the case, how could he possibly be guilty of kidnapping the terrorists in his custody?
Second, did Jack torture anyone? This is, more than anything else, the aspect of the case that disturbed most people at the time of the first (September 2004) trial. Here’s what Jack and his men were accused of in early press-reports:
These terrorists, who were working directly for Osama bin Laden and Gulbideen Hekmatyar, both on America’s Most Wanted list, now claim they were tortured and abused; now claim we smashed their heads in bloody bags, cut off fingers, poured boiling water on them, hung them upside down and dipped them in boiling water, repeatedly burned them with cigarettes, beat them day and night, and refused to feed them.
Certainly, this makes for grim reading … Only, here’s the thing: No evidence that any of this took place has ever been presented. None.
When the terrorists Jack and his team arrested appeared in court to give evidence against him, all were in good health, with nary a scold, cigarette-burn, missing finger or bashed head in sight. Also, no photographic or forensic evidence of the alleged ‘torture’ was produced, and all Jack’s accusers refused to be sworn in (on the Koran) before giving testimony. Most tellingly, witnesses claimed that the head-basing and finger-chopping took place in the basement of Jack’s house. One, small problem with this claim is that the property in question had no basement.
So that’s the ‘case’ against Jack Idema and his team. Now here’s Jack himself, describing the real methods he used:
We kept them awake with 24 hours of non-stop questioning, played loud Rock and Roll music and offered to let them work for us if they would turn over on the others. All that we questioned turned on each other. When one didn’t, we did not beat him, we simple confronted him with two that were cooperating and he quickly decided to join the same team.
Once they told us a little we gave them non-stop Miranda soda and restaurant kabob and promises of a new job working against terrorism.
The soldiers in Iraq that claim their abuse of prisoners was ordered by MI (Military Intelligence) are liars. You only have a few days at most to get actionable intelligence. Let a terrorist sit in a cell and you lose the initiative to find the others. Beat the terrorists and he admits to anything or nothing. Again you lose. Humiliate the terrorist and he hates you and feeds you lies.
Your only way to get the terrorists to talk is sleep deprivation, promises for freedom if he gives up the other terrorists, and convincing the terrorist you are his friend.
So who do we believe? A group of known terrorists making claims that they either cannot substantiate or which are demonstrably untrue (Jack’s vanishing basement, the absence of bashed-in heads and missing fingers)? Or a U.S. Special Forces soldier with decades of service to his country behind him? Whatever the MSM who so-uncritically covered the case might think, this isn’t a trick question.

So what can we do? Well, anyone reading this with their own blog can sign up for the weekly Free Jack Idema Blogburst by emailing Cao or Rottweiler Puppy for details. I’d urge everyone to do this, as we’re still terribly short on takers. If you want to know more about the story, Cao’s Blog has a large section devoted to Jack Idema. There’s also a timeline here, and, of course, a huge amount of information is available over at SuperPatriots, without whose work none of us would have learned about Jack’s story.

Investigative judge Raid Juhi told the Associated Press the charges against Hussein and six others had been filed with another judge, who will review the evidence and order a trial date. Under the Iraqi judicial system, the move is tantamount to an indictment.

"These people were subjected to forced displacement and illegal detentions of thousands of civilians. They were placed in detention centers. The villages were destroyed and burned,” said Juhi, who also said Kurdish homes and houses of worship were leveled.
"Within days the case will be moved to us," said Chief Prosecutor Jaafar al-Moussawi in an interview with Reuters.
The case involves Saddam's role in Operation Anfal, a three-phase move against northern-Iraqi Kurds in the late 1980s. Operation Anfal included the March 16 gassing of Halabja, which killed 5,000 men, women and children. Human rights groups consider the Halabja attack one of the gravest atrocities attributed to Hussein's regime.
Although Human Rights Watch estimates that upwards of 50,000 Kurds were killed during the Anfal campaign, Kurdish authorities say the number is double that figure. But both conclude that multiple-tens of thousands of Iraq’s Kurds were systematically killed in ground offensives and air strikes and that thousands of Kurdish villages were razed and resettled by Arabs.
Saddam's co-defendants include his cousin, Ali Hassan al-Majid aka "Chemical Ali," who allegedly led the 1988 chemical attack on Halabja.
Iraqi, Coalition Soldiers seize more suspects and caches
Iraqi security forces made several gains against terrorists and insurgents so far this week as a Coalition Police Transition Team provides specialized training to Iraqi Police.
7th Iraqi Army Division and Coalition troops captured five suspected insurgents and a weapons cache near Karabilah April 3. The cache contained AK-47 rifles and ammunition, a bag of detonation cord, blasting caps and rocket-propelled grenade boosters. No injuries or damages were reported.
Other Iraqi Soldiers found another cache the same day near Ramadi. Soldiers from the 1st Iraqi Army Division discovered a cache of mortar rounds, hand-held radios and artillery detonators during a raid in southeast Ramadi.
The previous day, Soldiers from the 1st and 7th Iraqi Army Divisions captured 15 suspected insurgents. Soldiers from the 7th arrested eight people near Ramadi and three others near Karabilah. The troops detained the military-aged males for suspected insurgent activity while conducting patrols in the areas. One of the detainee’s had been named on a suspect list.
Soldiers from the 1st Iraqi Army Division detained four additional suspects in Khalidiyah April 2. Each of the arrests occurred during joint security patrols with Coalition troops.
U.S. Army Military Police continue to train the Iraqi Security Forces to protect and secure their country, recently focusing on room clearing procedures at a police station in Baqubah.
The 978th Military Police Company conducts training at more than 15 police stations in Diyala Province. The MPs, attached to 4th Infantry Division, Task Force Band of Brothers, approach the training with the same crawl-walk-run philosophy used to train their own.
“We go there [to the Iraqi police station], we teach a certain thing and we’ll just work on that for a couple days,” said Sgt. Frank Zavala, an instructor with the 978th MP Company. “Then we’ll just keep building up on that until they get it down.”
The learning curve for a new Iraqi policeman is much like that of a new enlistee learning basic combat training. “We can obviously tell that a lot of these people have not done this before,” said Spc. Robert Stearns, 978th MP Company. “When we do our own AIT in the MP corps, it is very similar.”
The Soldiers conveyed the basic principles as well as the details, knowing small mistakes can be fatal, “Like putting a finger on a trigger or not paying attention where their sectors of fire were,” Stearns said.
The Iraqi police are an important part of the future stability of Iraq, and training efforts like this one will eventually enable them to sustain their own training and become independent.

Iraqi leader takes action toward peace
FOB KALSU, Iraq – Seeking a unified province free from terrorism and sectarian violence, leaders of groups in Babil came together Aug. 20 in Al Hillah to reconcile and denounce sectarian violence.
Iraqi Security Force leadership, representatives of the Iraqi national government, local government officials, social leaders, tribal sheik leaders and religious leaders, joined together at the Iraqi police academy convention hall to map out a strategic plan to shape Babil’s peaceful future.
“This was Iraqi generated, Iraqi led,” said Col. John Tully, commander, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, an invited guest of the ISF leadership present at the conference “They are clearly trying to come to grips with the issues their society is facing.”
The meeting was orchestrated by Maj. Gen. Qais Hamza, Babil provincial police chief, to bring representatives of every facet of Babil culture to the conference and provide them a forum to speak. It is hoped the meeting would signify the commencement of a new era in the region and the end of terrorism in southern Iraq, said a sheik in attendance.
“We have Sunnis, Shias, women, children – that is a miracle in this day of age,” he said. “Everybody knows what needs to be done, but Gen. Qais is the person who decided that it was time to quit talking and start acting.”
The idea came in coordination with Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al Maliki’s 24-point national reconciliation initiative plan he outlined to the Iraqi National Council of Representatives in June. Sectarian violence has plagued Iraq for much of the year, and leaders of Babil said they wanted to lead the rest of the nation in heeding al Maliki’s words.
The meeting started off with children from the area singing the Iraqi national anthem and readings from the Holy Koran. Many of those in attendance took turns speaking about the current situation in Iraq and Babil and then gave their suggestions on how to unify the region.
“There is no winner in war,” said Aeman Alkhafaji. “Everybody is a loser.”
Speaking on behalf of a women’s rights group, Alkhafaji said sectarian violence is destroying the greatest part of Iraqi culture – the family. When the man of the house dies, there is no one to provide for the family, no backbone present to steer their children to their future. Or when a woman is killed, it crushes the family dynamic and children lose the comforting tender side of the family.
“A woman without her man is like land without water,” she said. “And a man without his woman is like a ship without sail.”
Numerous Sunni and Shia tribal leaders spoke before the congregation and offered their hand to one another, promising to not let the trouble witnessed in Baghdad infiltrate their region.
“We are not Sunni or Shiite, Kurdish or Christians,” one sheik said. “We are Iraqis, and we intend to secure Iraq. The people who are fighting the old regime and each other are the same people that have lived together for over a thousand years and have drank from these two rivers.”
After a brief recess for lunch, Qais proposed a reconciliation agreement draft he drew up. The agreement’s last paragraph reads: “We have sworn this oath; we accept the promise of the Provincial Government to provide security for all citizens without regard to their sect, ethnicity or political party affiliation and to work toward inclusive, representative government unencumbered by bias and disenfranchisement.
Qais then challenged the more than 500 in attendance to sign the oath and make every effort to make Babil the place all of Iraq strives to be. A large reproduction of the oath each person received was placed near the door and everyone signed it as they exited the conference.
“Let Babil be the example for the freedom and the mixture that we have in Iraq,” said Col. Abbas, Al Hillah police chief.
Smiles were abundant as the participants left the conference, shook hands and offered kind words to each other. More work is left to do, but the initiative Qais introduced seemed to have struck a chord with the people who attended.
“It was very uplifting,” said Tully. “In this society, when you get that many Sunni and Shia sheiks to support a plan, there is a chance for success.
“If Babil can keep people like Gen. Qais in leadership positions, it will be the most progressive and truly democratic province of the southern provinces in Iraq.”

CAMP AR RAMADI, Iraq – At approximately 12:30 p.m. today, Coalition Forces were attacked from the Al Qadir Al Kilami mosque in Ramadi. The complex attack included small arms and machine gun fire, rocket propelled grenades, hand grenades, and an improvised explosive device attack.
Coalition Forces returned fire in self-defense, using escalation of force procedures, and finally fired several main gun rounds from M1 tanks into the mosque in order to defeat the attackers. The mosque suffered serious structural damage to the dome and minaret. One Coalition Force Soldier was wounded in the attack and later returned to duty. Enemy and civilian casualties are unknown at this time.
CF seize weapons, munitions, detain 6 suspected terrorists
CAMP TAJI, Iraq – A platoon of Estonian soldiers attached to 7th Squadron, 10th Cavalry Regiment, detained five suspected terrorists and seized their weapons after a small-arms engagement Tuesday north of Baghdad in Saab al Bour.
The Estonian soldiers searched the area near the source of the hostile fire and seized three AK-47 assault rifles, a PKC machine gun with ammunition and a sniper scope.
The suspects are being held for questioning.
In a separate incident, Multi-National Division – Baghdad Soldiers from 3rd Battalion, 67th Armored Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, confiscated a large weapons cache and detained one suspected terrorist Tuesday in eastern Baghdad.
The MND-B Soldiers discovered the cache when they stopped a suspicious looking convoy of civilian vehicles and found several armed men mixed in with the vehicles.
Upon searching the vehicles, the Soldiers discovered 28 AK-47 assault rifles, three PKM machineguns, a Dragunov rifle, 55 AK-47 magazines and various amounts of ammunition.
The weapons were confiscated and a suspected terrorist is being held for questioning.
IA advisors detain suspected terrorist
1st BCT PAO, 4th Inf. Div.

The 2nd Bde, 9th IAD advisors requested attack aviation to provide aerial reconnaissance, and the attack helicopter support from the Combat Aviation Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, identified a possible triggerman’s hide site.
The patrol searched the area and seized a suspected terrorist.
Meanwhile, a recovery team arrived to haul the damaged vehicle back to Camp Taji. The patrol returned to Camp Taji and
brought the detainee for further questioning.
Iraqi Forces Conduct Two Raids in Central Iraq
BAGHDAD – Iraqi army and security forces, with coalition forces observing, conducted multiple early-morning raids on August 23, capturing three primary suspects associated with emplacing improvised explosive devices and participating in illegal armed groups.
The first raid captured a person suspected of emplacing IEDs and targeting U.S. military personnel in Ar Ramadi. The raid was conducted without incident and five other persons were detained for questioning.
The second raid captured two persons who allegedly belonged to a cell that engaged in promoting sectarian violence through kidnapping and murder in southern Baghdad. The raid, conducted as part of Operation Together Forward, occurred without further incident.
No civilian, Iraqi forces or coalition forces were injured during the operations.
1st Sqdn., 61st Cav Regt., receives tip, frees hostage
FOB RUSTAMIYAH, Iraq – Multi-National Division – Baghdad Soldiers freed a local national being held against his will Thursday in western Baghdad’s Salman Pak neighborhood.
Soldiers from Troop B, 1st Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, received a tip that there was illegal activity going on at the Salman Pak gas station.
After cordoning off and searching the gas station, Soldiers found an Iraqi civilian in an outbuilding that was secured from the outside. The individual was freed and taken to a secure location, where he provided the names for 21 terrorists in the Salman Pak area. The names were then provided to the 4th Brigade, 1st National Police Division.
The incident is currently under investigation by Iraqi authorities.

In another incident, Soldiers from 2nd BCT located an IED on the side of a road southeast of Iskandariyah at approximately 9:30 a.m. An EOD team detonated the 152mm round.
Soldiers from 8th Squadron, 10th Cavalry Regiment, 4th BCT, 4th Inf. Div., found a roadside bomb consisting of a 122mm mortar round partially buried in a main thoroughfare of Ameriyah at approximately 11:20 a.m. The device was removed and destroyed by an EOD team.
Soldiers from 1st Battalion, 66th Armor Regiment, 1st BCT, 4th Inf. Div., noticed a copper wire coming out of the ground and leading back to a house nearby while conducting a reconnaissance mission near Najaf at approximately 8:10 a.m. Upon inspection, they discovered the wire ran to a firing position previously used for explosive devices and to a second explosive device. An EOD team disarmed and destroyed the explosive devices.
In a similar incident at approximately 11:50 a.m., Soldiers from 1st Battalion, 66th Armor Regiment, 1st BCT, found a 152mm IED on the side of a rural road near Al Hjaddah in the far northern suburbs of Baghdad. An EOD team destroyed the roadside bomb.
In another incident, Soldiers from 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, discovered an IED buried in the middle of a busy road in Yusufiyah while conducting a route-clearance mission at approximately 2 p.m. The 120mm mortar round was unearthed and destroyed by an EOD team.
There were no injuries or damage to property in any of the incidents.
Operations have taken place in Doura, Shula, Nur, Ghazaliyah and Ameriyah from Aug. 7-22. During this time, Iraqi army, Iraqi police and MND-B Soldiers have cleared approximately 31,000 buildings and 25 mosques, detained 70 suspected terrorists, seized 529 weapons, registered 341 weapons, found 19 weapons and munitions caches and removed 1,570 tons of trash.

Re-think Helmand Mission Impossible13th death in past three months in ‘Britain’s Vietnam’
**The "shock" title above and the gutless new age lefty drivel below are taken from the website of our piss poor MP, the proven libelist and pro druggie MP Paul Flynn. Mr Flynn has an anti US/Anti Blair/Anti Israel axe to grind.
Just look at the title he refers to the rebuilding work in Afganistan as "Britains Vietnam" and then decides he had best point out that most of the deaths previously are the result of "accidents" , what he covers up is the large number of Taliban and drug dealing scum that have been removed from Afganistan, the good work on the part of our troops in bringing security to Afganistan and of course the many brave Afgans who put their life on the line each and every day in order to make their nation a safer place to live.
That of course is something that a coward and a proven liar would never understand.
Paul Flynn MP Newport West called on the Government to rethink the mission impossible in Helmand. Thirteen British soldiers have been killed in Helmand Province in the past three months. Only seven died in the past five years in Afghanistan - mostly as a result of accidents.
In a Commons debate in February the Government was told that the Helmand incursion was a doomed, suicidal mission that could lead to a ‘British Vietnam’ and increase the threat of terrorism. As the Defence Secretary Des Browne has confessed the Taliban have been energised by the presence of British troops and today’s Sunday Independent (See must read) report the growing re-conquest by the Taliban of the Helmand Province. Despite the presence of 4,000 British troops, a 70-year-old woman and her son were hanged recently in Helmand by the Taliban on charges of spying for the government.
Two recent EDMs below.DEATHS IN HELMAND PROVINCE (No. 2)05.07.2006 Flynn, Paul That this House is distressed at the news of the death of the sixth British soldier in Helmand Province; acknowledges the worthwhile benefits of the UK's presence in Afghanistan since 2001 in deposing the previous regime and eliminating much of its medieval cruelty but is appalled by the imposition by President Karsai of warlords, criminals, gangsters and drug smugglers as police chiefs in many provinces inciting tribal resentment; regrets that the incursion into the previously peaceful province of Helmand to destroy its only means of livelihood has inevitably inflamed local antagonism and multiplied support for the Taliban; and calls for an immediate rethink of the UK's role in Helmand before the lives of more British soldiers are sacrificed. That this House records its sorrow at the deaths of five British soldiers in Helmand Province and salutes their courage and professionalism; regrets the complacency of the April statement of the former Defence Secretary that the mission could be over in three years `without firing one shot'; is appalled that after five years of expensive drug eradication this year's poppy harvest will be the biggest ever and the British street price of heroin the lowest ever; believes the threat to destroy the main livelihood of the people of Helmand has incited murderous resentment against UK troops and increased support for the Taliban that could lead to a British Vietnam and Afghani terrorism on British streets; further believes that the only practical reform would be to license poppy farmers to use their crops to end the world shortage of morphine; and calls for a rethink of a policy of using bombs and bullets to win hearts and minds.
**Well there you see it a Zanu New Labour mp out to make cheap capital out of the deaths of brave service men and woman, just to promote his own pro drug anti Bush/Blair agenda. Words fail me with this man, he is on a par with cat copier and total amoral cunt George Galloway. A proven liar, self confessed libelist a man with no moral fiber what so ever, this talentless sack of shit shames the noble house of Parliment. A sad and lonely MP who thinks it a fine thing to snipe and jibe at his betters.
Shame on him and the amoral lord Haw Haw types that fill the ranks of Zanu New Labour these days.
Paul Flynn MP, oh sorry its Private James Frazer from Dad's Army. Still according to Mr Flynn we are "All doomed!"

Although illegally-imprisoned U.S. Special Forces soldier Jack Idema and his compatriot Captain Brent Bennett are now held under the protection of their friends in the Northern Alliance, it’s always worth remembering how different things were for them in the months prior to their first trial back in 2004.
While the terrorists we capture are treated to lemon chicken, in the three months between his arrest in June 2004 and the start of his trial in September, Jack and his men were subjected to the following, appalling treatment:
Shortly after their arrest, they were subjected to varying degrees of torture and interrogation, apparently determined by rank. Jack Idema was repeatedly beaten by, and in the presence of- Amrullah at NDS Headquarters, as was Lieutenant Rasuli. A palace official was personally aware of and authorizing, at a minimum, Idema’s initial torture at NDS Headquarters by Amrullah, with FBI agents in close proximity and directing the interrogation.
During the following days and nights Idema was tortured with boiling water, starvation, threats of death, and assault with various implements (such as wire cables and rubber whips), resulting in broken ribs, a separated sternum, torn rotator cuffs, haemorrhaged eyes, multiple concussions, lacerations, contusions, and bruises. Although the U.S. Embassy later had medical reports indicating the extent of the torture, Sandra Ingram, Assistant U.S. Consul DOS Kabul, ordered the reports rewritten to tone down the extent of the injuries. During the torture Idema was restrained by Taliban iron leg bars and American Handcuff Company restraints (Serial Number # 177709) supplied by the U.S. Department of Justice. Further, reportedly FBI personnel were well aware of the ongoing torture and did nothing to intercede or stop it, and actually encouraged it.
Along with the physical abuses suffered by Jack and his men, they were also denied a fair trail. The judge, a ‘former’ member of the Taliban who had previously amused himself by sentencing women to death-by-stoning for adultery, announced that Afghan law was only ‘a guideline’, and that he intended to try Idema using the Taliban’s legal system. What this meant, in essence, was that Jack and Brent were denied anything even approaching a fair trail, as is illustrated by the following:
Bennett finally got a female Afghan lawyer in September 2004, ten days before the final verdict. She met Bennett ONE TIME for 20 MINUTES. She promptly informed Bennett that if she represented him Bakhtyari [the trial judge] would not allow her to speak because she was a woman, and he did not normally allow women to appear in his court without a Burka. Then she dropped the real bomb– if she appeared in court for Bennett, she would be murdered.
Inside the courtroom the abuses of due process continued:
Jack read the law about being able to call a witness and Bakhtyari said, “ok, call your witness.” Fatah handed a secret note up once again. This time to Prosecutor Dawari, who read it, smiled, then handed it to Bakhtyari. The Taliban Judge read the note, chuckled, then said, “We will save calling witnesses until the next hearing and you can do it then, this hearing is finished.” After four more hearings, and a verdict of guilty, the defence had still not been allowed to call a single witness or ask a single question of any of the terrorists who said the were hung upside down at the first “press conference” which Bakhtyari later called a hearing.
The verdict in this mockery of a trial was a forgone conclusion: Jack and his men were found guilty and imprisoned alongside the very terrorists they’d been hunting three months earlier.
Once behind bars, and out of the media spotlight, Jack was the victim of almost a dozen assassination attempts during prisoner ‘riots’. Indeed, if it hadn’t been for his allies in the Northern Alliance entering the prison and moving him to the relative safety of the annex he and Brent now occupy, he would likely have died in late 2004.
As things stand, Jack and Brent still rely on friends in the U.S. military to smuggle clean drinking water to them — The U.S. State Department refuse to offer them any aid, and threaten anyone caught assisting them with disciplinary measures.
