Homeless woman arrested for safety
HOMELESS woman Mahin, who has spent several weeks camped near the M4 in Newport, was this morning arrested for her own safety.
Police arrested her under section 136 of the Mental Health Act and she was taken to Maindee police station. Her belongings were collected by Newport council.
A spokeswoman for Gwent Police said: "She will be assessed by a doctor and various agencies, including social services, will be brought in and have a meeting to decide what is going to happen to her."
More than two years ago Mahin, who came to South Wales from Iran at the time of the revolution three decades ago, left Cardiff to make her way to Newport.
She told the Argus she wanted to get to London to see her two children, who are both in their 20s.
She arrived in Newport some time ago but made little progress after reaching the Tredegar Park junction and seemed to have reached an impasse at the slip road where she remained despite the driving rain and freezing conditions.
Mahin had refused help from the authorities and concerned passers-by. Some people made regular visits to her, including giving her food.
