Rome Total Realism

Downloaded the patch Rome: Total Realism a few days back for Rome: Total War and if you have played the original you need to get this. When the game starts up Rome’s position is considerably weaker at the outset of the game, with the immediate threat of Pyrrhus in the South, while a confident, powerful Gaul gathers its resources in the North of Italy for a conflict across northern Italy and beyond.

In the original you could take over a city and in no time at all have it making uber units ready to send off elsewhere, in this that is gone. Captured towns/cities have to build slowly over many turns before they can produce any decent units.

You soon realise that winning will take some time, having to use either mercinarys or leave troops to hold towns/cities. The battles look a lot better and the grapical tweeks zip along, the slow down from the original has gone.

Some of the old factions are gone, replaced by more accurate factions from a historical point of view. Add to that more cities and towns, so when you take on a faction be ready to have to take and hold numerous cities and have to defend them in turn from other factions looking to move in. Other factions have had some tweaks and new units added and/or updated, one that has had changed somewhat is the Spanish” being changed into to the “Iberians”. One thing I noticed was that London has been renamed from the original

It removes the original three factions of the Romans and instead the mod starts with a unified roman faction. In addition it has:
  • Seventeen fully playable factions
  • Two hundred new historically accurate army units
  • Totally revamped combat stastics system
  • New "Area of Recruitment" gameplay mechanic
  • Comprehensive graphical overhaul of the front end
  • Introduction video, faction elimination videos
  • Redesigned campaign map
  • Classical soundtrack conceived by a professional composer.
  • Many new custom battle locations
  • Additional historical battles
  • Authentic battle formations and army deployments
  • Enhancements enabling the AI to fight "smarter"
  • Gloss textures enabling environmental reflections.
