Patrols detain suspects, seize munitions

CAMP TAJI, Iraq – Soldiers from 2nd Tank Brigade, 9th Iraqi Army Division, supported by Soldiers from 7th Squadron, 10th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, detained seven suspected terrorists during a combined operation that began at approximately 1 a.m. Saturday north of Baghdad.
Soldiers from 2nd Bde., 9th IAD, and Troop A, 7th Sqdn., conducted a cordon and search and detained 38 suspects; 31 were released and seven were moved to Camp Taji for questioning.
Meanwhile, a dismounted patrol from 7th Sqdn., 10th Cav. Regt., seized munitions from two sites north of Baghdad at approximately 7:15 p.m. Saturday.
A patrol from Troop B found a rocket-propelled grenade launcher with two rounds, an AK-47 assault rifle with 10 magazines, a missile guidance system and 20 to 30 pounds of flake TNT explosives.
The same patrol found a mortar round at a second site. An Estonian Infantry Platoon attached to 7th Sqdn. reinforced the patrol and assisted with the searches.
MND-B Soldiers detain 12 suspected terrorists, seize weapons, munitions in separate operations
Multi-National Division – Baghdad PAO
BAGHDAD – Multi-National Division – Baghdad Soldiers from the 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, seized a large weapons cache during a cordon and search operation in northern Baghdad at approximately 12:48 p.m. today.
The weapons cache included 21 AK-47 assault rifles, 55 fully-loaded magazines of 7.62mm ammunition, 2 PKC machine guns, a Russian sniper rifle, tens of thousands of rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, a fragmentary grenade, four Jihadist propaganda magazines and a martyrdom recruitment poster.
There were no injuries of damage to equipment during the operation.
Earlier today, MND-B Soldiers from 7th Sqdn., 10th Cav. Regt., 1st BCT, 4th Inf. Div., detained six suspected terrorists north of Baghdad at approximately 3:30 a.m.
The MND-B Soldiers conducted a search of several houses finding six targeted terrorist suspects.
The suspects are being held for questioning.
In a separate event, MND-B Soldiers from 1st Battalion, 66th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, detained two suspected terrorists and seized weapons and munitions north of Baghdad Monday night.
The Soldiers conducted a cordon and search, finding two targeted terrorist suspects and weapons including two AK-47 assault rifles, an SKS assault rifle and seven fully-loaded magazines of 7.62mm rounds.
The Soldiers secured the weapons and detained the suspects for questioning.
Earlier Monday, Soldiers from 7th Squadron, 10th Cavalry Regiment, 1st BCT, 4th Inf. Div., detained four suspected terrorists while conducting a dismounted patrol north of Baghdad.
The MND-B Soldiers searched a house near a recent hostile-fire incident and found a weapons cache consisting of two AK-47 assault rifles with 10 fully-loaded magazines of 7.62mm ammunition, two SKS assault rifles, three bolt action rifles, a Dragonov sniper rifle, a machinegun and a rocket-propelled grenade launcher with two rounds. The patrol secured the weapons and detained the suspects for questioning.
IA, MND-B Soldiers sweep up large cache, save woman from kidnapping

BAGHDAD – Iraqi army and Multi-National Division – Baghdad Soldiers discovered a large munitions cache while conducting a cache sweep south of Baghdad at approximately 8:04 p.m. Monday.
Soldiers of the 3rd Battalion, 4th Brigade, 6th Iraqi Army Division, and MND-B Soldiers from Company B, 1st Squadron, 75th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, discovered three 155mm artillery rounds, 35 105mm mortar rounds, two 60mm mortar rounds, two rockets and three small explosives.
In a separate event, IA soldiers foiled a kidnapping attempt by terrorists in central Baghdad at approximately 9:10 p.m. Monday.
5th Brigade, 6th Iraqi Army Division soldiers stationed at a traffic control point observed a woman being forced into a car. IA soldiers fired warning shots at the terrorists, who returned fire at the traffic control point, injuring one Iraqi citizen. During the small-arms fire exchange, the woman fled the scene.
The injured Iraqi citizen was taken to a nearby hospital and IA soldiers escorted the woman back to her home.
IA soldiers rescue 3 kidnapped policemen after terrorist attack

BAGHDAD – Soldiers from 4th Brigade, 6th Iraqi Army Division, rescued three kidnapped Iraqi policemen Wednesday during a small-arms engagement with terrorists in a rural area outside of Babil province.
The freed Iraqi policemen reported being kidnapped from another checkpoint only minutes away from where the gunfight took place.
The IA soldiers discovered the kidnap victims after they were attacked by small-arms fire from four vehicles passing by their checkpoint. They returned fire, capturing two of the vehicles.
Soldiers examined the vehicles and found three police officers in the trunks, along with an AK-47 assault rifle and a rocket-propelled grenade launcher.
The kidnap victims indicated two more officers were being held in the vehicles that fled.
Iraqi Forces capture IED cell leader
BAGHDAD – Iraqi forces conducted an early-morning operation on August 16 west of Baghdad, capturing an improvised explosive device, or IED cell leader as part of the ‘Together Forward’ security plan.
Iraqi army forces conducted an intelligence-focused, precision raid as coalition force advisers looked on in the Abu Ghuryab area of Baghdad and captured their primary target. This cell leader, active for the past several months, is believed to be responsible for the construction, emplacement, and detonation of IEDs.
Four other individuals also were detained during the raid.

BAGHDAD — Iraqi Security and Coalition Forces continue working together in support of Operation Together Forward in Baghdad and are already witnessing the positive results of their efforts to quell the threat of terrorist death squads, improvised-explosive devices, kidnappings and murders.
Since the operation began July 9, combined forces have killed 97 and detained 501 terrorists associated with death squads and seized more than 59 weapons and munitions caches in the process.
A combined force of more than 30,000 security personnel have completed more than 49,564 combat patrols in response to Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki’s directive to immediately secure the Baghdad area.
While security operations aimed at ending violence are still ongoing, Iraqi and Coalition Force leaders have set the stage for permanent changes in Iraq’s capital city by planning civil operations that will coincide with security operations.
Operation Together Forward has fused Iraqi army, Iraqi police and Coalition Force security operations, economic incentives, civic action projects and the control of illegal weapons to bring stability and opportunity back to Baghdad.
Iraqi Forces capture terrorist facilitator in Ash Sharqat

BAGHDAD – Iraqi Army forces conducted an early-morning operation on August 17 in Ash Sharqat, capturing a facilitator of terrorist activity in that area
Soldiers from the 4th Iraqi Army Division, assisted by coalition advisers, conducted a precision raid and captured this facilitator whose alleged involvement in fraud, local corruption and embezzlement provides support to terrorist operations in the area. Additionally, he is believed to be responsible for improvised explosive device, or IED attacks against coalition forces, including one attack that killed a U.S. soldier.
The operation was conducted without incident; no Iraqi forces, coalition forces or civilians were injured.
Multi-National Division – Baghdad PAO
BAGHDAD – Soldiers from 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, Multi-National Division – Baghdad, detained two suspected terrorists and seized a large weapons cache in a warehouse during a search of Nur and Ghazalyia today in support of Operation Together Forward.
The weapons and munitions seized included 272 120mm mortar rounds, 212 82mm mortar rounds, 99 60mm mortar rounds, 33,800 14.5mm rounds, 5,000 7.62 rounds, 90 5.56 rounds, 165 19mm rounds, 104 rocket-propelled grenades, 240 23mm rockets, 200 60mm primers, 22 107mm rockets, nine 069B rockets, 11 RPG rounds, two landmines, a .30caliber shape charge, a crater charge, 11 fragmentation grenades, a machine gun, two AK-47s, a PKC machine gun, an RPK machine gun, two 14mm machine guns, 20 full AK-47 magazines, ammunition drums, various loose ammunition, 5,000 feet of detonation cord, three bayonets, five 82mm tubes, four 60mm tubes, three 60mm mortar bipods, four 81mm mortar bipods, two 60mm mortar bases, an 81mm base, two land mines, an 81mm mortar base, an aiming circle, two aiming poles, 54 rocket motors and various bomb-making materials.
The suspected terrorists were detained for questioning. All munitions and weapons were confiscated for destruction. Five hundred buildings were searched during the operation.
Operations have taken place in Doura, Shula, Ghazaliyah and Ameriyah from Aug. 7-16. During this time, Iraqi army, Iraqi police and MND-B Soldiers have cleared more than 23,000 buildings, 21 mosques, detained 54 suspected terrorists, seized 326 weapons, registered 341 weapons, found 10 weapons and munitions caches and removed 900 tons of trash.
Most successful Iraqi Police recruiting drive
CAMP FALLUJAH, Iraq – More than 950 new Iraqi recruits will begin a 10-week Basic Police Officer training course August 21, 2006.
The new recruits are the result of one of Multi-National Forces - West most successful recruiting efforts this year.The monthly drive focuses on identifying, screening and signing up local Iraqi national men from communities in and around the Euphrates River Valley.

Upon completion of training, the recruits will return to their communities where they will serve as some of the more than 7,000 Iraqi police officers trained under the new Iraqi government.
According to Multi-National Forces - West Police Advisor, Maj. Robert Chiaruttini, the success of recent recruiting drives is due in part to improvements that the Iraqi Ministry of Interior and Al Anbar officials have made to the system used to pay Iraqi police.
“Getting these guys paid on time had been an ongoing issue in the past,” Chiaruttini said. “I would not say the system is perfect now, but it’s definitely improving and I think you can see the results of that in our recruiting numbers.”
