Combined operations in Diyala continue to obstruct insurgent activity
MULTINATIONAL DIVISION – NORTH PAO

BAQUBAH, Iraq
– Iraqi Police and Coalition Forces apprehended three suspected insurgents and seized a sizable cache Tuesday in a combined operation south of Baqubah.

Iraqi police from Baqubah, Iraq and Soldiers with Alpha Company, 1-68th Combined Arms Battalion, 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, Task Force Lightning, discovered the individuals, along with a cache, while conducting a combined two-day operation searching area palm groves and the surrounding villages for illegal activity.

During the search, both elements came under small arms fire from a house near where IP and CF were operating. The Soldiers returned fire resulting in one insurgent killed.

The cache consisted of one AK-47, five AK-47 magazines, two hand grenades, IED making materials, anti-Iraqi propaganda, and binoculars. The three detainees were taken to a secure location for questioning, and the cache was destroyed in a controlled environment.

This successful find is part of ongoing combined operations throughout the Diyala province, led by Iraqi Security Forces, to disrupt insurgent activities. It also demonstrates the increased capability of the ISF in Diyala in working to keep the communities safe.

CAMP TAJI, Iraq
– Iraqi army soldiers from 1st Platoon, 5th Special Troops Company, 3rd Brigade, 9th Iraqi Army Division, graduated from the Macedonian-led basic combat training course Sunday at Camp Taji.

The course was designed by the Macedonian Special Forces Regiment, which is attached to 1st Battalion, 66th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, to supplement the training the soldiers received in basic training and to allow them to better execute their daily missions alongside the Macedonian soldiers.

“For more than 16 days, we assisted the Macedonians in providing the Iraqi soldiers with additional combat training, to include marksmanship training, two ranges, a shoot house, structure clearing procedures and first aid,” said Sgt. 1st Class Russell Coughenour, noncommissioned officer-in-charge, 3rd Bde, 9th IAD Military Transition Team. “We also focused on basic discipline and noncommissioned officer development during the training.”

Six MTT members and 28 Macedonian soldiers trained the platoon of 52 Iraqi soldiers from start to finish. The platoon will return to its area of operations to conduct military operations.

“It was fabulous,” said Coughenour. “They were a refined crew by the time they were done. They’re just a super bunch of guys.”

The training came to fruition after the Macedonian SF Regt. conducted an assessment of the Iraqi forces during some initial missions.

“Our job is to assist and advise the Iraqis,” said Capt. Zoran Ivanov, contingent commander, Macedonian SF Regt. “The training will allow them to be more confident and proficient in their training.”

The Iraqis seemed to appreciate the additional instruction.

“The training was tough, but good,” said Pvt. Ali, an infantryman with 5th STC, in his second year of service in the new Iraqi army. “I learned some new skills and they taught us things like self-confidence, duty, loyalty, respect and discipline.”

The soldiers are the first to go through the training, but not the last, Ivanov noted. Two more cycles of training are scheduled, which will mean 150 Iraqi soldiers will have gone through the additional training.

“I feel good that I graduated from this course, and I hope I will be able to fight the terrorists,” said Spc. Adel, infantryman, 5th STC. “I want my nation to be at peace.”

Ivanov said he recognized an almost instant change in the soldiers after they completed the training.

“They will go back to their units and begin going on missions after this,” he said. “The soldiers displayed lots of effort. They want to learn. At the end of the training, the difference was obvious. The ‘Scorpions’ of 5th Special Troops Company are completely different soldiers.”

The next graduating class is scheduled for late October.

Iraqi Soldiers Assume Control of Fallujah Civil-Military Operations Center

FALLUJAH, Iraq
– Iraqi soldiers from the 1st Iraqi Army Division assumed responsibility for the Fallujah Civil-Military Operations Center from Regimental Combat Team 5 Marines in downtown Fallujah Oct. 6.
“Today will help make Fallujah and Iraq more safe,” said Iraqi Capt. Lathe, a commander in 3rd Battalion, 2nd Brigade, 1st IA Division.

“The building itself is completely turned over to the Iraqi Army,” said 33-year-old Chief Warrant Officer 2 Josh Stone, the CMOC security officer from Fort Lauderdale, Fla. “This is one step closer to turning the battlespace over to the Iraqi Army.”

The CMOC facility, which formerly housed a fitness center and school, has served in its current capacity as a government center since Operation Al Fajr, according to Capt. Jodie Sweezey, a 37-year-old team leader in the 4th Civil Affairs Group from Arlington Va. The operation, planned and executed by the 1st Marine Division under the command of Maj. Gen Richard Natonski in 2004, resulted in the recovery of the city from insurgent elements who had taken refuge there.
The complex remains home to the mayor’s office and will continue to host the Fallujah City Council Meeting, which convenes on Tuesdays.

The civil services previously provided at the complex, however, will now be available at the Fallujah Development Center, located on the immediate outskirts of the city.
“It gives ownership back to their city,” said Sgt. Austin Moore, a 22-year-old sergeant of the guard Marine from Claxton, Tenn., who has served in the CMOC since August. “The more we give back to them the more they will take care of.”

16 detained during raid on al-Qaeda in Iraq meeting

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition Force detained 16 suspected terrorists Tuesday during an early morning raid west of Balad targeting an al-Qaeda in Iraq terrorist group that conducts car bomb and IED attacks in the Samarra area.

Credible intelligence indicated that a meeting with 30 armed individuals at the objective was taking place. As the raid commenced, numerous men fled the objective building and other buildings including some running to a nearby river to escape.

The ground force determined the occupants of the building showed hostile intent and used a concussion grenade as a force protection measure during the clearing process.

Coalition Force personnel discovered seven personnel in the room, four of them wounded – two women and two children. The Coalition ground force evacuated the civilians from the building. The ground force then administered first aid to the wounded, stabilized them, and moved them to a Coalition medical facility by helicopter.

Over the next few hours, the ground force continued to clear the objective area. During this process, the ground force received and subsequently returned fire, wounding one suspected terrorist. Another suspected terrorist received minor wounds as he attempted to flee and was apprehended by the ground force. Coalition ground force personnel detained both suspected terrorists.

The actions of terrorists demonstrate their intent to undermine the Iraqi government. It is unfortunate that terrorists continue to surround themselves with women and children as they plan for operations and target innocent Iraqis.
