THE bombers who attacked the London Underground on July 7, 2005, originally planned to bomb Big Ben, the London Eye and other tourist attractions, it has emerged, as three men were charged with helping the terrorists plan their attacks.
The men, from Leeds, in northern England, are the first to be charged over the July 7 attacks, which killed 52 people. They were accused on Thursday of conspiring with the four suicide bombers to cause explosions on London transport and at main tourist attractions.
Also on Thursday Britain’s most senior anti-terrorist detective issued an extraordinary attack on elements within the West Yorkshire Muslim community, whom he accused of shielding July 7 conspirators and intimidating potential witnesses.
The accusation by Peter Clarke, the head of Scotland Yard’s Counter-Terrorism Command, is confirmation that the police believe there are extremists plotting terrorist attacks in Britain.
The July 7 plotters are believed to have changed their plans at the last minute.
The charges against the three suspects, all originally from the Beeston area of Leeds, follow nearly two years of painstaking investigation.
Detectives have pieced together hundreds of hours of closed-circuit TV footage showing the suicide attackers and their alleged accomplices conducting reconnaissance of London landmarks and Underground lines. They have also used mobile phone records to plot their movements.
The charges date to November 1, 2004, shortly before Mohammed Sidique Khan and Shehzad Tanweer, the leaders of the plot, travelled to Pakistan, where it is thought they underwent training. They go to June 29, 2005, the day after Sidique Khan, Tanweer and Germaine Lindsay set off on a reconnaissance mission round London.
Mr Clarke accused potential witnesses of hampering the police investigation.
“I firmly believe that there are other people who have knowledge of what lay behind the attacks in July 2005 - knowledge that they have not shared with us,” he said. “I don’t only believe it, I know it for a fact.
“I also know that some of you have been actively dissuaded from speaking to us. Surely this must stop. The victims of the attacks, and those who will become victims of terrorism in the future, deserve your co-operation and support.”
Mr Clarke called on those with information about the suicide bombers and their alleged accomplices to come forward, warning that there would be further arrests. His strong language will fuel speculation that the police fear there could have been a mastermind behind the atrocity.
Officers were forced to arrest the three men two weeks ago when two of them arrived at Manchester Airport, planning to fly to Pakistan.
The decision was taken on Thursday to charge Mohammed Shakil, 30, Sadeer Saleem, 26, and Waheed Ali, 23, all British citizens of Pakistani origin. Ali, who was known until recently as Shipon Ullah, had been living in east London but was from Beeston, where the other two men lived.
Sidique Khan, a primary school teaching assistant, was said to have used a local gym to try to recruit others and to have held meetings in a back room of an Islamic bookshop.
