Gordon Brown should create a new bank holiday in November to thank community heroes, a think tank has urged.
The Institute for Public Policy Research says the day may also help his goal of building a British identity.
Spokeswoman Kate Stanley said: "We need a day when people give something back to their communities," adding that the day would celebrate British diversity.
**You got to love that new buzz word, diversity. I think what they mean is Asian, moslem, black, or those who Labour can spin into heroes. Now I wonder who that might be, social workers, teachers, dinner ladies, Labour party donors, party apparachniks, rather than say proper heroes.
You know the sort of people, the real unsung heroes who who shun the limelight, fight for the nation or do vast amounts of charity work without ever wanting to be in the glare of pr from a dying government that has failed on all its other jobs.
You know the sort of thing, lowering taxes, full employment, decent healthcare, children that can read and write by the time they leave school.
In fact if they did want to remember some real heroes I could name many many thousands of them, in short all the people who took part in the Korean War. A war now largely forgotten about.
