Cheers rang out as the result was announced to a packed Commons chamber after a five-hour debate.
But there were also angry shouts from Conservative opponents of the move, protesting about the role of DUP MPs, who were believed to have backed the government.
It will come as a big boost to Mr Brown after his recent troubles.

**I would just like to add that each and every MP who voted yes is a cunt, make that a double cunt in the case of the DUP..
Well said though to Tony Benn who said:How come when they said previously that 90 days were needed, now 42 is good enough?
Also what is with this offer/concession, proposing a compensation plan under which any suspect held for more than 28 days and later not charged could receive £3000 for each extra day in custody.
Now far from me to be cynical of the CPS being crap and messing up cases - but a report not so long back showed and I quote:link
The performance tables for all 42 areas of the CPS in England and Wales found a mediocre performance in more than half of the service. So all it takes is for some clerk at the CPS to lose the papers or otherwise cock things up and Mr Ali Quada is let go as the case fails, as he is not charged he can trouser(or is that turban) a nice fee all thanks to our piss poor CPS.
All I can ask is can we please ensure that for the sake of the taxpayers if for no other reason that cases are actually put together properly before banging folk up for 42 days.
Hell I could use some extra cash meself, an extra 42K that will fill a large fiscal hole to be fair.
Hell even £3K would do fine right at this moment in time.
Now where did I put that book on making explosives from curry powder?....
