The Home Office spent more than £1m on taxis last year, figures released today showed.
Spending on cabs went up by 16% in 2008-2009 to £1,045,671, the immigration minister, Phil Woolas, said.
The figures – revealed to the Tories in response to written parliamentary questions – showed a huge increase in spending on taxis since Labour came to power.
David Ruffley, the shadow police reform minister, said the spending was "utterly disgraceful" and called for a clampdown.
