Police are not stopped from going on patrol by red tape – it's because they 'enjoy staying in the station in the warm', Jack Straw claimed yesterday.
In comments that drew a furious response from officers, the Justice Secretary dismissed claims that excessive bureaucracy kept them from catching criminals.
Mr Straw said he was 'sceptical' that mountains of paperwork was preventing overworked PCs helping the public – despite the Government's own 'red-tape tsar' admitting efforts to cut bureaucracy have failed.
Home Office figures show that officers are spending almost a fifth of their time on paperwork and little more than an eighth patrolling.
The proportion of their time spent form filling rose from 18.4 per cent in 2005 to 19.7 per cent this year.
Patrol time was down 1.7 per cent to 13.6 per cent – equivalent to an average of six hours a week.
Officers united to condemn Mr Straw's remarks as 'inflammatory' and 'irresponsible' while the Conservatives said he was 'out of touch'.
What a daft twat he is. Many of the police would I am sure, love to dump the paperwork; but creating paperwork is the only thing this shower of shit government is any good at. If the police spend more time filling in forms than they should, that would be quite simply because The Government has increased the bureaucracy.
Besides according to the Mail, the police are not keeping warm as Mr Straw claims but instead wanking like monkeys over internet porn.
