FOR more than 100 years it stood proudly as the centrepiece of England's oldest public park before being decapitated during a Second World War air raid.

Now a row has broken out after plans to replace Derby's historic Florentine Boar statue were abandoned for fear of offending Muslims, whose religion considers pigs to be 'unclean'.

A replica of the statue, a crouching wild boar, was intended as the jewel in the crown of a Pounds 5 million National Lottery- funded restoration of the city's Arboretum Park.

But councillors have called for the proposal to be scrapped amid sinister warnings that the statue would be vandalised or stolen.

The Florentine Boar statue stood from 1840 until 1942 when it was beheaded by a German bomb. But it was last week branded 'offensive' during a meeting of Derby Council's minority ethnic communities advisory committee.

Councillor Suman Gupta, a Labour representative for Derby's Derwent ward, told the meeting: 'If the statue is put back in the Arboretum, I have been told it will not be there the next day, or at least it won't be in the same condition.

'We should not have the boar because it is offensive to some of the groups in the area.' The park is in an area known for its large Pakistani community.

Shokat Lal, a community leader, said at the meeting: 'In Normanton the majority of residents are Pakistani Muslims.

'I'm not saying we have to lose the boar, but we could put the boar in the city centre so it does not cause offence to people.' Local historian Christopher Harris told The Mail on Sunday: 'We are living in a multicultural society and I hope that would include English culture.

'If the boar had never been destroyed in 1941, these people would have grown up with it and would not have noticed it.

'Activists have jumped on the chance to make a statement. It is one that damns English culture-But the wild boar is part of Derby's culture.' He said a small minority of Muslims with extreme political views had issued veiled threats to the council over the statue.

The land for the park was donated to the council in September 1840 by Joseph Strutt, the first mayor of the Borough of Derby, a wealthy cotton mill owner who wanted to give the public a place to exercise.

He commissioned architect J.C. Loudon to landscape the area. The hollow ceramic boar was donated by Mr Strutt.

Sculpted on commission by W. J. Coffee - and based on drawings of a similar statue in the Market Nuovo in Florence - it was intended as a gift to the working classes of Derby.

Last week's committee meeting proposed that a statue of Mr Loudon should be erected at the Arboretum with a new site for the boar in the city centre.

Last night, Councillor Gupta told The Mail on Sunday: ' Communities change.'

Tory leader Philip Hickson said: 'The community is strong enough to stand a statue of a boar in a park. But we live in an age where sometimes things are a little more politically correct than they ought to be.'

DHAKA, Bangladesh - Authorities ordered extra police and paramilitary patrols nationwide after several bombs exploded at court buildings in three Bangladeshi towns Monday, killing two people and wounding several others, police said.

Police arrested at least six suspects caught by the public at the bomb sites in Chandpur, Laxmipur and Chittagong, according to a statement from Police Headquarters in the capital, Dhaka. Police also said they found some of the suspects carrying handwritten statements calling for Islamic rule.

HARDLINE Indonesian Muslim cleric Abu Bakar Bashir, who is imprisoned for his role in the 2002 Bali bombings, today condemned the weekend blasts on the resort island.

"I really disapprove of bombings in non-conflict areas for whatever reason, including in Bali, because it can be almost certain that innocent and unknowing victims would fall," Bashir said.

In the written comments released by his lawyer after he visited the cleric in jail, Bashir said he was particularly saddened if such attacks claimed the lives of "people whose religion is Islam".

He advised the injured victims and the families of those who died in Saturday's triple suicide attacks, "to accept this fate from Allah".

He also advised the Indonesian Government to "approach closer to Allah" by practising God's law as best as it can.

"These saddening incidents, in essence, are warnings, scolding from Allah to us all who are not respecting his sharia (Islamic religious laws)," he said.

Arabs nervous during holy festival:
CAIRO, Egypt - The Middle East is jittery as it heads into Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting and spiritual introspection that has become a time of increased attacks by suicide bombers who believe they receive extra blessings.

From Iraq to Lebanon to the Sinai, the month of prayer and after-dark feasting is now a month of heightened security.

Egyptian police planned increased watchfulness throughout the month, while insisting no specific threats had been received. But Israel warned its citizens to stay away from Egypt's beach resorts in the Sinai peninsula, calling the threat of attacks substantial.

Militants have not issued specific Ramadan-related threats, but the spike in violence in recent years - especially suicide attacks in Iraq - has been notable.

One possible reason is the belief by some Islamic extremists that those who die in combat for a holy cause during Ramadan are especially blessed.

"This is a month that has a spiritual feel to it, which condones the issue of jihad (holy war)," said Diaa Rashwan, an Egyptian expert on Islamic groups. Operation River Gate launched- US taking the fight to the Islamonazis

CAMP BLUE DIAMOND, AR RAMADI, Iraq – The 2nd Marine Division launched Operation Bawwabatu Annaher, or River Gate in English, in the cities of Haditha, Haqlaniyah and Barwana Oct. 4.

Approximately 2,500 Marines, Soldiers and Sailors from Regimental Combat Team – 2 and Iraqi Security force soldiers are participating in the operation, making it the largest operation in the al Anbar province this year.

The operation’s goal is to deny al Qaeda in Iraq the ability to operate in the three Euphrates River Valley cities and to free the local citizens from the terrorists’ campaign of murder and intimidation of innocent women, children and men.

Haditha is an important crossroads for al Qaeda in Iraq’s smuggling activities from the Syrian border. Once in Haditha, smugglers can go north to Mosul or continue on to ar Ramadi, Fallujah or Baghdad. The city is home to approximately 75,000 Iraqis, a vital hydro-electric power plant, and 28 schools.

Coalition and Iraqi forces located in western al Anbar province have seen a recent increase of al Qaeda in Iraq violence in Haditha. Last Spring, terrorists attacked Haditha General Hospital, the largest in western al Anbar, with a suicide car bomb, destroying more than half of the building with the explosion and ensuing fire. Terrorists also established fortified firing positions inside the hospital and used patients and staff as human shields as they attacked Marines from the hospital and later retreated from the Marine counterattack.

Terrorist encampment and large cache found in Diyala Province

TIKRIT, Iraq— Task Force Liberty and Iraqi Army Soldiers uncovered information leading to a possible anti-Iraqi force encampment during the discovery of a large weapons cache near Ghalibiyah at 12:30 a.m. Oct 3.

The cache was discovered after Iraqi Army Soldiers were attacked while on patrol, returned fire and pursued the attackers to two large farmhouses in the area. Iraqi soldiers requested Task Force Liberty assistance and then conducted a joint raid.

A search of the properties yielded two vehicles prepared as improvised explosive devices (propane tanks with TNT), one suicide bomber vest, 19 57mm rockets, 18 SPG 9 (anti-tank) rockets, 16 rocket propelled grenades, two launchers, 10 anti- tank mines, 20 mortars, 25 mortar fuses, three machine guns, two AK-47 rifles, and 4 hand grenades.

Also found was an Iraqi Army uniform, two Al-Qaeda flags, an Al-Qaeda flier, an Al-Qaeda Jihad book and miscellaneous medical equipment. Task Force Liberty explosive ordnance disposal personnel conducted a controlled blast to destroy the munitions.

Although the attackers escaped, they were later apprehended at the Khalis Hospital while one was receiving medical treatment for wounds received during the firefight.

The European Court of Justice has ruled that European Union (EU) institutions have the legal authority to freeze the funds of individuals ‘in connection with the fight against international terrorism’, if it is sanctioned by the UN Security Council.

Its decision comes in a case brought by Ahmed Ali Yusuf, the Al Barakaat International Foundation and Yassin Abdullah Kadi, whose funds were frozen in Sweden in 2001.

Kadi heads the Saudi-based Muwafaq Foundation, which the US alleges is an al-Qaeda front, and Yusuf the Sweden-based Al-Barakaat foundation, whose claims to send humanitarian aid to Somalia have been challenged by intelligence services.

The plaintiffs argued the 2002 EU regulation used to freeze their property illegally infringed their property rights, but the court found the EU had no choice but to approve the law, given the paramount nature of UN decisions, ‘which prevail over any other obligation’.

Meanwhile, global police agency Interpol is introducing a new terrorism notice alerting law enforcement organisations worldwide about the identity of a terror suspect, telling them to freeze their assets and impose travel bans.

The new notice will be used alongside Interpol’s better known ‘red notice’, telling police to hunt internationally wanted criminals. Osama Bin Laden has long been among Interpol’s Top 10 most-wanted people.

4 October 2005: It was last Saturday night when 21 year-old Joel Henry Hinrichs III, a college student at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, OK detonated a large bomb outside of a packed football stadium in America’s heartland. The bomb was so large that it could be heard up to four miles away and shattered windows in the George L. Cross building located about 100 yards from the blast.

WASHINGTON -- The FBI's counterterrorism unit has launched a broad investigation of US-based theft rings after discovering that some of the vehicles used in deadly car bombings in Iraq, including attacks that killed US troops and Iraqi civilians, were probably stolen in the United States, according to senior government officials.

Inspector John E. Lewis, deputy assistant director of the FBI for counterterrorism, told the Globe that the investigation hasn't yielded any evidence that the vehicles were stolen specifically for car bombings. But there is evidence, he said, that the cars were smuggled from the United States as part of a widespread criminal network that includes terrorists and insurgents.

Cracking the car theft rings and tracing the cars could help identify the leaders of insurgent forces in Iraq and shut down at least one of the means they use to attack the US-led coalition and the Iraqi government, the officials said.

The inquiry began after coalition troops raided a bomb-making factory in Fallujah last November and found a sport utility vehicle registered in Texas that was being prepared for a bombing mission....

''It is getting a tremendous amount of attention in the US government," said Steven Emerson, who runs the Investigative Project on Terrorism, a Washington research firm that consults for law enforcement and intelligence agencies. ''We have gotten more calls on this than anything else in the last three or four weeks. [Auto theft] is an unregulated market. Some of the proceeds are going to terrorists."

Task Force Baghdad patrol nets terrorists

TAJI, Iraq – Task Force Baghdad Soldiers apprehended two men who violated curfew and possessed a loaded rifle northwest of Baghdad Sept. 29.

Soldiers of 4th Battalion, 1st Field Artillery Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 1st Armored Division, heard gunshots and then observed two men in a car on a highway after curfew.

When they stopped the vehicle, the Soldiers saw an AK-47 assault rifle in the passenger's lap. After inspecting the weapon, the Soldiers discovered it was loaded.

The two men were detained by members of the patrol.

The arrest of two undercover British SAS operatives last week, disguised as Arabs trying to plant a car bomb in the middle of Basra during the Karbala Festival, which draws as many as 3 million pilgrims to the city, is just the latest of such revelations.

The good doctor goes on to give a historical analysis of the terrorist war in Iraq so far:

Car bombings in Iraq started few months after the occupation. The first attacks were directed against the U.N. Headquarters in Iraq prompting the U.N. to withdraw its employees. The Red Cross and the Jordanian Embassy were also initially targeted. Later on car bombing targeted several mosques and religious leaders, and lately the fragile Iraqi Police became the main target. Oddly enough the common denominator in these attacks is that they targeted exclusively Iraqis rather than the occupying forces. It does not make any sense for Al-Qaeda and Al-Zarqawi, allegedly came to Iraq to fight Americans, to attack Iraqi civilians and Iraqi police.

And we all know how sensible Zarqawi is.

There is a common belief that these car bombings are orchestrated by foreign forces (Americans, British, and Israelis) in Iraq to spread chaos. Imad Khadduri, the Iraqi-exile physicist, reported of Arab drivers discovering bombs planted in their cars after being stopped and interrogated at an American checkpoint. Baghdad Burning blog reported in May 2005 of eyewitnesses to American patrols planting bombs in Ma’moun area in west Baghdad. Abdel Hadi Al-Daraji, Al-Sadr’s top official in Sadr City, accused Britain of plotting to start an ethnic war by carrying out car bombings targeting Shia civilians and then blaming the attack on Sunni Arabs. He said: “Everyone knows the occupiers’ agenda. They are in bed with the Mossad (the Israeli secret service) and their intention is to keep Iraq an unstable battlefield so they can exploit their interests in Iraq”.

Just to shore up the factual basis behind his writings, Dr. Akleh quotes an always reputable source: the Mahdi Army:

Sheik Hassan Al-Zarqani, a spokesman for Mahdi Army militia described the two British SAS operatives as terrorists. He stated that the Iraq police found weapons, explosives and remote control detonators in their car. He explained “We believe these soldiers were planning an attack on a market or other civilian targets”.

I’m sold.

Task Force Baghdad nabs terror suspects, weapons

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Coalition forces detained 14 suspected terrorists, found six weapons caches, and seized terrorist propaganda materials during a series of combat operations conducted throughout the capitol city Oct. 1.

The largest operations of the day were a pair of late-night raids resulting in the capture of 10 terror suspects in south Baghdad. One of the raids, which netted four suspects, was carried out after an Iraqi citizen provided a tip to Coalition forces about terrorist activity taking place in his neighborhood.

Just before dawn, Task Force Baghdad Soldiers acting on another tip from an Iraqi citizen, conducted a cordon-and-search operation in north Baghdad. In one hour, the Soldiers searched four safe houses in the area and captured two terror suspects.

Later, around 8 a.m., a Task Force Baghdad patrol found a weapons cache while working in southwest Baghdad. The cache contained 22 mortar rounds wired with detonation cord, three artillery rounds, two hand grenades and some assault rifle ammunition.

Task Force Baghdad Soldiers made their largest find of the day just before 10 a.m. After discovering 25 mortar rounds hidden in west Baghdad, the patrol fanned out to search the entire area.

A half hour later, the Soldiers found a second cache 150 yards away, then a third cache between the other two. The Soldiers continued to look and ended up finding two more caches. The five caches consisted of 64 mortar rounds, two mortar tubes, three rockets, three bombs, 20 rocket-propelled grenades, 12 hand grenades and numerous handguns.

In other combat operations, U.S. Soldiers detained a suspected bomb maker at a house in north Baghdad at 10:30 p.m.

Task Force Baghdad Soldiers also caught another terror suspect and seized terrorist propaganda while searching three more houses in north Baghdad.

THE radical Shi’ite leader Moqtada al-Sadr has authorised his militia to kidnap two Britons in Iraq in the hope of swapping them for two of his senior officials who are held in Basra by British forces.

A senior official from al-Sadr’s Mahdi army in Baghdad said that al-Sadr had given the order after last month’s dramatic rescue of two SAS men whom he had been hoping to use as bargaining chips.

The source said al-Sadr had given British authorities until yesterday to release his men, but they had failed to do so.

“In return for our two officials, two Britons will be taken,” the source said. The two need not necessarily be from the British military, but could be civilians, he added.

The source claimed that the Mahdi army had already pinpointed two British targets working for private security companies in the affluent Mansour district of Baghdad. Several British security firms have bases in the area.

The Samaria military court on Sunday sentenced Mohammed Mustafa Dara , 23, of Kakilya, to life plus an additional 10 years for his involvement in the murder of seven-year-old Noam Leibovtich on June 17, 2003.

Noam was traveling with her parents along the Trans-Israel highway when Palestinian gunmen opened fire, killing her and wounding several other family members. ...

Shin Bet agents, aided by IDF troops, later captured three members of the Islamic Jihad cell, which carried out the attack.

The terrorist cell used a cafe and mosque in Kalkilya to plan the attack and distribute weapons and money funneled from abroad, security sources said.

Novelty pig calendars and toys have been banned by bosses at Dudley Council in case Muslim staff are offended.

Workers in the council’s benefits department have been told to remove or cover up all pig products including toys, porcelain, calendars and even a tissue box featuring Winnie the Pooh and Piglet.

It comes after a Muslim worker said they were offended by pig-shaped stress relievers delivered to the authority.

Muslims are forbidden from eating pork in the Koran and staff were asked to remove the items.

The partner of one of the members of staff in the Ednam Road department, who did not want to be named, said: “It’s caused a bit of an atmosphere in the office. The staff did comply but it’s just crazy - things like ornaments that have been on desks for years have had to be removed.”

Head of finance at the council Mike Williams, who is responsible for the department, said the member of staff said they were offended by the products in the run up to the Islamic festival of Ramadan.

He said a decision will be taken after the festival ends about whether the items are allowed back.

Asked what reason the member of staff gave in making the request for their removal, he said it “did not matter why it was considered offensive”.

He acknowledged that some members of the department had seen it as “political correctness gone barmy”.

Councillor Mahbubur Rahman, a practicing Muslim, said he agreed with the action taken.

“If it is a request made by an individual and other officers can reason a comprimise it is a good thing, it is a tolerance and acceptance of their beliefs and understanding,” he said.

“But if it were a blanket ban I don’t know how it would benefit the whole issue of working together."

So there we have it, shes not happy and she wants them punished as killers. Never mind due process and the fact that an investigation has to take place first.

Task Force Liberty Soldiers complete water project for Klaw Qut village

TIKRIT, Iraq— The people of Klaw Qut, in Kirkuk Province, celebrated the completion of a new well and water storage system August 16, a project made possible through the cooperation of the local government and Task Force Liberty's 116 th Brigade Combat Team.

Klaw Qut is an interior village of 60 families that relied entirely on a dirty, slow moving stream for water. The Qarah Anjir local government worked with coalition leaders to provide a well, pump house, storage tank, generator and rudimentary network using the Commander's Emergency Relief Program (CERP).

“Clean drinking water is a concern for all Iraqi's as the government works towards upgrading existing facilities and building new ones,” said Capt. Lane Packwood, a company commander with the 116 th Brigade Combat Team's Task Force 1-148 Field Artillery. “This project provides an immense improvement in the village's quality of life.”

Working with Iraqi leaders to complete critical infrastructure projects is part of the 116 th BCT's mission while deployed in north central Iraq . The unit's mission also includes assisting Iraq 's new government, supporting economic development, facilitating communications and improving security and stability in the region.

8th Brigade veterinarians reach out to local farmers Sgt David Bill 48th Brigade Combat Team PAO BAGHDAD — Cows and sheep are being used to help develop trust and friendship between local Iraqi farmers and Task Force Baghdad Soldiers. The Soldiers from C Company, 490th Civil Affairs Battalion, 48th Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division conducted a Veterinarian Community Health Outreach Programs mission Aug. 22 southwest of Baghdad . Under this program, Army veterinarians go into local communities and provide a quick health check on the livestock in the area. If required, they also provide medication to help keep them healthy.

“We try to go out to various areas a couple times per week to check on which animals have been treated recently and which have not,” said Maj. Daniel Cardosa, a veterinarian from C Co. More than 60 sheep and two dozen cows were medicated during the day's mission. “We were de-worming the sheep with an oral medication. Cows were being treated with a topical medication. Both medications are used to kill most internal parasites and a good number of external parasites as well,” added Cardosa.

The process of medicating the animals is a team effort as the farmer or his children assist in getting the sheep, one by one, in a steady position so the veterinarian can insert a medical injector. “I think it allows us to put a friendly face on the United States and get a foot in the door to show that we're here to help them not hurt them,” explained Cardosa, a West Greenwich , R.I. resident. “Then at another time we can come back and do assessments for electrical and water problems we may be able to solve for them.”

Getting Iraqi veterinarians out to work with the farmers has also been a focus of the CA team, so more can be done for the animals. When asked about what Coalition Forces were doing on a larger scale, Cardosa replied, “In the bigger scheme of things we are working with the Ministry of Agriculture to develop animal health and agricultural programs, so they are not solely dependent on oil for their income. We're trying to develop other economic sectors for the country.” C Co.'s overall mission is to provide more than just the basic services for Iraqis. The unit conducts a wide range of operations to include humanitarian support, coordination with government entities, and community outreach. Services such as sewage, water, electricity, and trash are important to the local population and are some of the main priorities of the CA Team.

Things get dafter by the day.Today is the first of October, but news from the West Midlands suggests it could be the first of April, but the only fools are the chumps who have completely lost the plot at Dudley Council.

In a bid to avoid offending Muslims who work in or deal with the council benefit department, the Conservative controlled Council has ordered a ban on novelty items featuring pigs! Yes indeed, products including toys, porcelain, calendars and even a tissue box featuring Winnie the Pooh and his cute and harmless friend Piglet must be removed or covered up, staff have been instructed.

Iraqi, U.S. Forces seize terrorist weapons, bombs

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Iraqi Army and Task Force Baghdad Soldiers found five weapons caches hidden in north Baghdad Sept. 30.

The largest discovery was made by combat engineers from the 70th Engineer Battalion, 3rd Brigade, 1st Armored Division at a house in north Baghdad.

The unit captured two suspected terrorists at the house around 8 a.m. and began a search of the area. In just over two hours, the Soldiers discovered three weapons caches containing nine missiles, seven rocket launchers, 20 rockets, 69 mortar rounds, more than 300 rocket-propelled grenades, and 119 hand grenades.

They also found a wide assortment of artillery rounds and bomb-making materials, including 53 detonators, 42 time fuses, three machine guns, several types of rifles, scopes, pistols and ammunition.

At 6 p.m., Iraqi Soldiers from 1st Battalion, 1st Brigade, 9th Iraqi Army Division (Mechanized) found a fourth weapons cache while patrolling in north Baghdad. The cache consisted of 20 mortar rounds and bomb-making materials, including five pounds of plastic explosives, one box of rocket fuses, cut lengths of wire, two remote-controlled detonation devices and an instruction book on how to build bombs.

Minutes later in a different area of north Baghdad, a Task Force Baghdad patrol found the fifth cache. The cache contained five bombs consisting of mortar rounds already wired with detonation cord, three RPG launchers with 12 RPGs, plastic explosives, three AK-47 assault rifles, a pistol and ammunition.

Coalition Forces also found two improvised explosive devices. One of the bombs was an anti-tank mine connected to a radio, and the other bomb was two artillery rounds attached to a telephone. In both cases, the Soldiers cordoned off the area to keep people away from the bomb site, and called in explosives teams to safely dispose of the bombs.

BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan – A key enemy commander was captured by Afghan National Police forces in the Ghazni Province Wednesday.

Abdul Gafar was captured after a local man reported his location to Afghan forces. U.S. forces provided security while Afghan National Police detained Gafar.

Gafar is behind a number of improvised explosive devices, rocket and small arms attacks against Afghan and U.S. forces in the Ghazni area.

ALGIERS, Oct. 1 (Reuters) - An Internet statement attributed to Algeria's largest outlawed Islamic militant group, aligned with Al Qaeda, says that it opposes amnesty in exchange for laying down its arms and that it will continue its jihad, or holy war.

In a Sept. 29 referendum, Algerians approved a government offer of partial amnesty for combatants in a civil war that lasted more than a decade and claimed more than 100,000 lives, mostly those of civilians.

"This vote is a waste of time," said the statement on an Islamist Web site, dated Sept. 27 and attributed to Abdelmalek Droukdal, also known as Abu Mossab Abdelwadoud, the leader of the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat. "Algeria is not in need of a charter for peace and national reconciliation, but in need of a charter for Islam."

It was the first time the Salafist Group had seemed to comment on the controversial amnesty project, but the statement's authenticity could not be immediately verified.

The Salafist Group is on the United States' list of foreign terrorist organizations and has recently expanded its activities to neighboring countries.

"The jihad will go on," the statement said. "We have promised God to continue the jihad and the combat."...

"There will be no peace and no reconciliation as long as Islam is not taken into consideration," said the statement attributed to Mr. Droukdal, which also praised Osama bin Laden and his deputy in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.

2 October 2005; 0545 a.m. EDT During the Oklahoma University and Kansas State Football game Saturday night, a large explosion occurred outside of the stadium packed with 84,000 football fans that was heard up to four miles from the stadium.

The blast happened shortly after 7:30 p.m. CDT on the South Oval, across the street from the Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, near the George Lynn Cross Botany-Microbiology building the oval's east side, and near an area where numerous busses to transport people from the stadium were parked.

A number of agencies were on-site, including Oklahoma University Police, the Norman, Oklahoma Police, the Cleveland County Sheriff's Office, Oklahoma Highway Patrol, state medical examiner's office, as well as the FBI and Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

According to one local law enforcement official who spoke to the Northeast Intelligence Network at 3:45 a.m. EDT on the strict condition of anonymity, “other un-detonated explosive devices were found in the area cordoned off by police and federal officials.” The police are working on one theory – and at present it remains a theory - that the so-called “suicide-bomber” was attempting to attach bombs to the buses parked in the area when one of the a bomb detonated prematurely.

The gender, race and ethnic origin of the “suicide bomber” has yet to be publicly released, although authorities on-site believe they know the identity of the bomber. According to the officer who spoke to the Northeast Intelligence Network, officials are “not yet ruling out the involvement of others,” but declined to elaborate any further.

A senior U.S. official reiterated Thursday that the country wants to remain the Internet’s ultimate authority, rejecting calls in a United Nations meeting in Geneva for a U.N. body to take over.

EU spokesman Martin Selmayr said a new cooperation model was important “because the Internet is a global resource.” “The EU ... is very firm on this position,” he added. The Geneva talks were the last preparatory meeting before November’s World Summit on the Information Society in Tunisia. A stalemate over who should serve as the principal traffic cops for Internet routing and addressing could derail the summit, which aims to ensure a fair sharing of the Internet for the benefit of the whole world.

At issue is who would have ultimate authority over the Internet’s master directories, which tell Web browsers and e-mail programs how to direct traffic. That role has historically gone to the United States, which created the Internet as a Pentagon project and funded much of its early development. The U.S. Commerce Department has delegated much of that responsibility to a U.S.-based private organization with international board members, but Commerce ultimately retains veto power.

Some countries have been frustrated that the United States and European countries that got on the Internet first gobbled up most of the available addresses required for computers to connect, leaving developing nations with a limited supply to share. Abu Bakar Bashir, the Indonesian Muslim leader who is or has been the head of the radical Muslim group Jemaah Islamiyah (although he denies it) has said that "the Bali bombers and an Indonesian bomb-maker killed by the Philippine military in October were not 'terrorists' but God's fighters." ** I agree with sending them to meet their god asap.

"Fathur Rohman al-Ghozi, who recently became a martyr, is a jihad [holy war] fighter, not a terrorist," Bashir told a gathering of prisoners at Salemba prison in Central Jakarta that journalists and his supporters were allowed to attend.

Convicted Bali bombers "Imam Samudra, Mukhlas, Amrozi and his friends are not terrorists either, they are fighters of the army of God," Bashir said, who is serving time for immigration offences. Bashir, 65, also praised Osama bin Laden as a Muslim fighter. He has praised bin Laden, head of the Al Qaeda terror network, in the past but his public accolade for Bali bombers was the first.

A court in Bali has sentenced Samudra, Amrozi and Amrozi's brother Mukhlas to death for their roles in the Bali bombings, which killed 202 people, mostly Westerners, on October 12, 2002. Self-confessed bomb-maker Al-Ghozi, a senior operative of the Jemaah Islamiah (JI) extremist network that is linked to al-Qaeda, was killed by Philippine troops in October after escaping from a Manila jail three months earlier. The JI network is blamed for a string of bloody attacks including church bombings which killed 19 people on Christmas Eve 2000, the Bali blasts on October 12, 2002, which killed 202 people and the August Jakarta Marriott hotel blast that claimed 12 lives.

Bashir said Indonesian Muslims had been targets of slander from the United States, which he warned the authorities not to support. "I warn police if they remain supportive of the US, they can laugh now but will later cry for the rest of their lives," he said

Earlier in the day Bashir's lawyers filed a petition to the Supreme Court against an appeal court ruling that he must serve three years in jail. In September he was convicted of treason through taking part in a JI plot to overthrow the government. But the court said there was no proof that he headed the JI terror network, as prosecutors alleged. The appeal court this month cleared Bashir of treason. It upheld his conviction for immigration offences and forging documents but cut his jail term from four years to three. His lawyers want him cleared of all charges. Bashir has denied any links to terrorism and said he was framed by Washington because he campaigns for Islamic sharia law. ** What an arsehole.

U.S. Soldiers nab 18 terror suspects

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Task Force Baghdad Soldiers continued clearing roadside bombs and detaining terrorists in operations around the Baghdad area Sept. 29 and 30.

Around 9 p.m. Sept. 29, a Task Force Baghdad patrol reported finding an improvised explosive device on a highway in west Baghdad. An explosive ordnance disposal team safely cleared the bomb from the site. Two suspects were detained for further questioning in connection with the IED.

Elsewhere, after setting up an impromptu control point in northeast Baghdad, Task Force Baghdad Soldiers stopped four suspicious vehicles around 11:55 p.m. Sept. 29. Upon searching the car, the Soldiers discovered terrorist propaganda, 10 Iraqi Police badges and six IP-issue Glock pistols. Soldiers detained 12 suspects for further questioning.

About 10 minutes later, another vehicle was stopped at the same check point and the four occupants of the car were discovered to have Iraqi government badges, three AK-47 assault rifles and one Glock pistol. The four individuals were also detained for further questioning by IPs.

At 12:30 a.m. Sept. 30, a Task Force Baghdad patrol saw two individuals placing a roadside bomb on a highway south of Baghdad. The Soldiers fired on the individuals who then fled the scene. The area was cordoned off and the anti-tank landmine was safely destroyed by an EOD team.

BAGHDAD — The newest addition to the U.S. Army’s artillery arsenal was successfully fired recently during Operation Restoring Rights in Tall Afar, Iraq, and Operation Sayaid in Iraq’s Al Anbar Province.

Battery B, 3rd Battalion, 13th Field Artillery Regiment used the Guided Multiple-Launch Rocket System to fire eight guided rockets from a distance of more than 50 kilometers at two insurgent strongholds in Tall Afar Sept. 9 and 10, killing 48 insurgents, said Maj. Jeremy McGuire, deputy of operations, Force Field Artillery, Multi-National Corps - Iraq. Battery A, 3/13 FAR fired another six rockets Sept. 11, destroying the Mish’al Bridge and preventing its use for insurgent forces in the Al Anbar province in western Iraq, McGuire added.

Production of the GMLRS began more than 18 months ago at Fort Sill, Okla., and 3rd Bn., 13th FAR has been training with the system since June 2004. It was designed to reduce the amount of collateral damage in combat, giving commanders on the ground the ability to take out a terrorist or insurgent target accurately and effectively without creating the excess damage other artillery and air-dropped munitions may cause, McGuire said.

When the system was used in Tall Afar Sept. 9 and 10, damage to surrounding buildings was almost non-existent and the target’s destruction was absolute, said Capt. Robert J. Hannah, 3rd Bn., 13th FAR.

“This system is something the artillery community has been working on for some time,” McGuire said. “It was tested in the continental United States, and now we’ve demonstrated in Iraq that we’re extremely effective with it.

“We can be accurate, we can be lethal, and we can also have a very low collateral damage estimate. We can engage the target without compromising the safety of the civilians nearby and also take out the terrorists or insurgencies that engage our forces.”

Operation Restoring Rights’ senior U.S. officer, Col. H. R. McMaster, commander, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, weighed in on the combat effectiveness of the new system. “The GMLRS proved itself in combat in Tall Afar and provided the regiment with tremendous capability. It not only was able to hit enemy positions with a great deal of precision but was able to limit collateral damage.”

The physical and psychological effect the system had on the enemy in Tall Afar — who was trying to either successfully defend against an attack or goad the Coalition into destroying large portions of the city — was extremely valuable, McMaster said.

“This [system] allows ground commanders to precisely attack small targets — even in an urban environment — with even lower collateral damage than precision bombs used by the U.S. Air Force,” said Hannah.

If the aircraft are unable to support a mission because of communication or weather issues, ground commanders will still have access to the new GMLRS system, which provides the same capabilities as the air power, McGuire said.

Before sending ground troops into Tall Afar during Operation Restoring Rights, there were a number of buildings that needed to be destroyed in preparation. Two separate targets were successfully destroyed by the guided MLRS system. The missiles were fired from an area more than 50 kilometers away. The targets were two housing complexes that had been fortified and were known to contain at least 40 insurgents, McGuire said.

“Each of the targets was pre-planned,” said Maj. James Daniels, Regimental Fire Support Officer, 13th FAR. “Before we fire on a target, we have to prove the structure is linked to the insurgency, using intelligence from units in the field that have been engaged from the structure, or have made contact with the terrorists around the structure.”

Troops on the ground engaging the enemy will also benefit from the missile system’s small blast radius and effectiveness, improving their survivability and safety. The troops will be able to maneuver closer toward their aggressors to maintain a better visual of their targets, said Sgt. 1st Class Paul Luketich, senior fire control non-commissioned officer, FFA, MNC-I.

“Basically, it’s a safer munition for our troops and nearby civilians, but a more deadly munition for the insurgents,” Luketich said. “It’s the best munition in the arsenal today.”

The intent of Coalition Forces in combat situations is not to demolish an entire city block to eliminate a single insurgent or group of terrorists. Their intent is to purge the country of insurgency to help stabilize security and improve the quality of life for the citizens of Iraq, McGuire said.

This new missile system helps that cause dramatically. Commanders on the ground will have another option to engage the enemy with, allowing them to make better-informed decisions focused on the safety of innocent civilians as well as effectively countering Iraq’s insurgency, McGuire said.

“We’re engaging terrorists who are reckless and have no regard for civilian life, as they have demonstrated day in and day out,” McGuire said. “It’s very difficult for us to make the population believe that our choice is the best.

“It’s very important that we’ve come up with this weapon. It will help the commanders make the call that will not only accomplish the mission and keep the population safe, but rid the country of terrorists as well.”

BAGHDAD, Iraq - About 1,000 U.S. service members launched an offensive in western Iraq near the Syrian border on Saturday aimed at insurgents from Al-Qaida in Iraq, this country's most feared militant group, the military said.

The operation against "a known terrorist sanctuary" began in the town of Sadah in the western province of Anbar, about eight miles from the Iraq-Syria border, the U.S. military said in a statement.

The offensive also was aimed at stopping foreign insurgents from entering the country from Syria and at improving security in the area before Iraq's Oct. 15 national referendum on the country's draft constitution, the military said.

No civilian or military casualties were immediately reported, and the U.S. military declined to say whether Iraqi forces were taking part in the operation.

Elsewhere, the U.S. military released about 500 Iraqi detainees from the notorious Abu Ghraib prison out the outskirts of Baghdad on Saturday, completing its plan to free a total of more than 1,000 this week in honor of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

The releases began Monday with the freeing of more than 500 detainees at Abu Ghraib prison, which gained international notoriety after a number of U.S. military personnel were charged with humiliating and assaulting detainees at the facility.

The Abu Ghraib actions, made at the request of Iraq's government, also appeared to be part of its effort to persuade Iraqis to vote in the Oct. 15 national referendum, especially the country's minority Sunnis.

Many of them oppose the constitution, saying it would give Kurds living in the north and majority Shiites in the south too much independence and control over Iraq's oil wealth, and leave Sunnis isolated in the central and western Iraq.

On Thursday and Friday, Sunni insurgents hit two Shiite towns _ Balad and Hillah _ with brutal bombings that killed more than 110 people, apparently aimed at scaring Shiites away from the crucial constitutional vote. The car bomb attacks seemed staged to kill or maim as many civilians as possible, tearing through busy markets and commercial streets.

On Saturday, the Iraqi Islamic Party, the country's largest Sunni political group, condemned Balad and Hillah attacks, saying "such sinful acts only serve the schemes of the occupiers" by widening the gap between Iraq's Sunnis and Shiites. The party urged Iraqis "to stop the violence and solve their problems by words, not weapons."

Insurgents have vowed to derail the referendum, and the recent surge of violence has killed at least 200 people _ including 13 U.S. service members _ in the past six days.

That includes a drive-by shooting by suspected insurgents in Baghdad on Saturday that killed Iraqi army Lt. Col. Hatam Baani Mohammed Al-Rubaiee while as he traveling to work in the morning, said police Maj. Falah Al-Mohammadawi.

The Sunni-led al-Qaida in Iraq, the most feared insurgent group, has declared "all-out war" on Shiites, and since a Shiite-majority government took power in Iraq on April 28, suicide bombers have killed at least 1,345 people, according to an Associated Press count.

On Saturday in the western town of Sadah, about 1,000 U.S. Marines, soldiers and sailors from Regimental Combat Team-2 began the U.S. military offensive, which was named "Operation Kabda Bil Hadid," or "Operation Iron Fist" in English.

It is aimed at rooting out Al-Qaida in Iraq insurgents and disrupting their support systems in and around the town near the Syrian border, the military said.

In recent months, the insurgents have established a base in Sadah and used it to launch attacks against Iraqi civilians and U.S. and Iraqi in the area, the statement said.
