London Scumbag bomber buried in Pakistan
LAHORE, Pakistan, Oct. 28 (UPI) -- The remains of a British-born suicide bomber involved in the July 7 London bombings were buried at an Islamic saint's shrine in Pakistan.
The funeral for 22-year-old Shahzad Tanweer, one of four bombers who blew up a subway train killing seven, was held in the village of Chhotian Kota in Pakistan where family relatives live, the Independent reported. Tanweer was born in Bradford, England.
The burial was attended by about 200 people, including Tanweer's father, Mumtaz Tanweer, a police official said.
The Pakistani government has said Tanweer arrived in Pakistan in November 2004 along with another bomber Mohammad Sidique Khan. They left after three months, having attended a terrorist training camp, the report said.

Suspected Neo-Taliban Militants Torch Girls' School
Suspected neo-Taliban militants torched a girls' school in Logar Province on 29 October, AFP reported the next day. Local authorities in the province, where four other girls' schools have recently been burned, said the latest school to be attacked was being renovated and tents were being used as student facilities pending completion. "The school, the tents, the chairs, generator, and a vehicle were destroyed in the fire," said Qudratullah Arabzai, the chief investigator in the area. Arabzai blamed the fire on "enemies of Afghanistan," an apparent reference to the neo-Taliban, who are suspected of being behind the previous school attacks. Before losing power in 2001, the Taliban outlawed education for girls in Afghanistan. The legacy of the practice is enduring. A report by the United Nations released in October said school enrolment for girls in Afghanistan is less than 10 percent, one of the lowest rates in the world. MR
Guerillas Strike Security Post In Southeastern Afghanistan
Suspected neo-Taliban insurgents attacked a security post in southeastern Afghanistan on 29 October, the Afghan Islamic Press news agency reported on 30 October. No one was hurt in the attack, in which insurgents used heavy weapons and small arms. The head of security for Paktiya Province, Mohammad Nabi Saleh, said the attackers ran off after the brief skirmish. "Unidentified men attacked a security post in [the] Naiknam area of Zormat District last night," Saleh said. "The assailants used rocket launchers apart from light weapons, but the government forces did not sustain any casualties or material losses." Saleh said a hunt for the attackers is under way. MR

IRAN has promised a reward of $10,000 (£5,600) to Islamic Jihad if the militant group launches rockets from the West Bank towards Tel Aviv, a senior Palestinian intelligence official said last week. Speaking in his Ramallah office, the official produced a fat wad of $100 notes which he said had been confiscated from a pro-Iranian Islamic Jihad activist. The money was said to have gone from Iran to Damascus, the Syrian capital, from where Ibrahim Shehadeh, Islamic Jihad’s head of overseas operations, transferred it to the West Bank. According to the intelligence official, the Palestinian Authority has located workshops where “Al-Quds” (Jerusalem) rockets are being made and has given their co-ordinates to the Israelis. “We understand they destroyed some of them,” he said. The Israeli media claimed last week that rocket attacks from the West Bank were widely expected: Ben Gurion airport’s eastern runway is just five miles away and the outskirts of Tel Aviv are within 10 miles. Shaul Mofaz, Israel’s defence minister, and the army’s chief of staff held an emergency meeting to discuss requests from the mayors of towns bordering the West Bank for sirens to alert inhabitants to incoming rockets. Israeli intelligence officials said that Iran was threatening the country on three fronts: through long-range missiles based in Lebanon; through terrorist networks around the world; and through the new arsenals of the West Bank. Islamic Jihad is the only Palestinian group that calls for the destruction of the state of Israel. Based in Damascus, it has an annual budget of several million dollars — provided by Iran. Ramadan Shalah, its leader, has a PhD in economics from Durham University. The organisation’s military arm is the “Al-Quds Brigades”. Since the death of Yasser Arafat last year, Islamic Jihad has taken the lead in attacks against Israel. A suicide bombing that killed five people in the northern town of Hadera last week was revenge for the killing by Israeli special forces of Luay Saadi, the group’s leader in the West Bank. This weekend Israeli forces launched an operation against the organisation in both the West Bank and Gaza — including the destruction of the rocket workshops. | |
