IA, MND-B Soldiers destroy 19 roadside bombs, find 3 caches, detain 29 suspected terrorists

BAGHDAD , Iraq Iraqi Army and Multi-National Division -- Baghdad Soldiers found and destroyed 11 roadside bombs and three weapons caches in the last 24 hours as well as conducted two major offensive operations resulting in the detention of 29 suspected terrorists.

Posted by PicasaSoldiers from 3rd Battalion, 6th Iraqi Army Division and 2nd Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, worked together in order to disrupt anti-Iraqi force activity northwest of Baghdad in a combined cordon and search operation that began Feb. 15 at approximately 11:30 p.m. and ended Feb. 17.

The 6th IA and 2-22 Inf. Regt. cordon and search operation netted 11 suspected terrorists and three weapons caches.

The first cache consisted of 19 x RPGs, 18 x RPG 7M rounds, one Russian-made light anti-tank weapon, one 120 mm mortar tube, three 82 mm mortar tubes, two RPK light machine guns, one FNL assault rifle, one SA-7 surface-to-air missile (no launcher), 22 x 120mm, 25 x 129 mm, five 107 mm, two 125 mm artillery rounds and eight 82 mm, eight 57 mm, seven 80 mm, two 130 mm mortar rounds, 5,000 rounds of 7.62 mm, 1,500 rounds of 12.5 mm, powder charges and Motorola radios.

At the site of the cache, the Iraqi and MND-B Soldiers found a terrain model, two fighting positions, and two underground tunnels.

The second weapons cache consisted of one SKS carbine rifle, 400 armor piercing rounds, five RPG rounds, two 30 mm, one 60 mm, one 120 mm, and five 20 mm rounds, an explosive of unknown composition, and 17 155 mm fuses.

Posted by PicasaThe third cache consisted of two 130 mm mortars, six 60 mm mortars, two anti-aircraft guns, two .50 cal machineguns, 17 rockets, one 130 mm mortar round, 18 82 mm mortar rounds, 15 60 mm mortar rounds, six 30 mm rounds, four PG7 anti-tank rounds, 14 RPG rounds, 30 hand grenades, 87 heavy machinegun rounds, 106 anti-aircraft rounds, one crate of .50 cal ammunition, 12 RPG fuses, six RPG boosters, and one bag of gunpowder.

“We have the enemy on the run,” said Lt. Col. Kevin Brown, commander, 2-22 Inf. Regt. “The success we had in the inner city areas of Abu Ghraib the first 6 months in country caused the enemy to find sanctuary out here in the less populated urban areas."

“Now, with the Muthana Brigade of the Iraqi Army keeping the pressure on (the terrorists) in Abu Ghraib, and the establishment of Firebase Courage, we've been able to stretch our operations further, and continue to reduce AIF sanctuary and freedom of movement. Combined with the success achieved by Iraqi Special Forces in locating associated targets either in concert with or as a result of our operations – it's a complete team effort. We are winning.”

Coalition Explosive Ordnance Disposal teams destroyed the four caches.

Additionally, Iraqi Special Troops Company and Macedonian Rangers executed Operation Level Sand this morning at 1 a.m. north of Baghdad in order to neutralize terrorist activity and destroy weapons caches in the area.

The operation netted 18 suspected terrorists and resulted in the confiscation of ten AK-47s and three pistols.

Mission in Northern Iraq changes hands

Posted by PicasaWrapping up its second tour of duty in Iraq, the U.S. Army’s 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment formally transferred authority for operations in its northwestern sector of Iraq to the 1 st U.S. Armored Division’s 1st Brigade Combat Team during a ceremony in the city of Tall Afar Feb. 19.

“Understanding that the key to counterinsurgency is focusing on the people, not the enemy,” said Col. H. R. McMaster, commander of the 3rd ACR in a recent Washington Post interview. “We changed the standing orders of the regiment to state that in the future all soldiers would treat detainees professionally."

“The first thing that the people really wanted was security for them, for their children,” said Col. McMaster during a Pentagon briefing Jan. 27. “The situation is much improved. I could give you statistics and so forth, but these are changes that are very visible to us and certainly to the people of the city, who have returned to the city. People who left in the period 2004 to 2005 have come back to rebuild their lives.”

He went on to mention improvements in Iraqi political participation. “It was impossible for the people of Tall Afar, 75 percent of whom were Turkmen Sunna, to participate in previous elections,” said Col. McMaster. “Now with the constitutional referendum and also with the elections in December, there was an extraordinary degree of participation. Ninety percent of the eligible voters, in fact, were able to come to the polls based on the security situation and their desire to be part of the new Iraq. Other things that have changed are the sectarian violence is ending and we see some very encouraging signs of reconciliation,” he added.

The mayor of Tall Afar was so pleased with the work of the 3rd ACR he wrote a letter praising the unit:

“To the Courageous Men and Women of the 3d Armored Cavalry Regiment, who have changed the city of Tall Afar from a ghost town, in which terrorists spread death and destruction, to a secure city flourishing with life,” wrote Mayor Najim Abdullah Abid Al-Jibouri. “No matter how much I write or speak about this brave Regiment, I haven’t the words to describe the courage of its officers and soldiers. I pray to God to grant happiness and health to these legendary heroes and their brave families.”

The efforts of Coalition Forces combined with an outreach to local citizens have made Tall Afar an example for other communities.

Elsewhere in Iraq, the challenging work against insurgents and terrorists continued.

The day prior, two terrorists were killed while attacking Iraqi police in Tall Afar Feb. 16. The terrorists initially used small arms to attack the officers, who returned fire. One terrorist then attempted to throw a hand grenade which detonated prematurely, killing both terrorists.

Later on Feb. 16, the same police unit found a building rigged with 700 pounds of nitrate explosives during an area search. An Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team responded to the site and disarmed the device. Police sustained no injuries or damages in either incident.

Posted by PicasaFinally David Irving talks and is full of shit but he shouldn't go to prison for 3 years or so for talking shit. It used to be that fools like him and that asshat with the bad beard who runs Iran would be laughed at by most people for denying the nazis ran extermination camps and slaughtered countless jews, gypsies and anyone else who was not part of the planned master race.

Alas for Mr Irving he made his comments in Austria, homeland of a certain Mr A. Hitler and a nation that has some rather strick laws regarding denying the holocaust.

Although the flip side of the coin is that if we had laws like that, you can bet the looney Koranimals who were spouting hate in Londonistan the other week, threatening another 7/7 and all the rest of it would now be arrested and awiting trial. Mind you for that to happen we would need to clear out the coward Blair, his parasitic wife(bottom feeding human rights lawyer and where oh where is Dick & his gun when you need a lawyer shot?) and all the other gutless Dhimmi New Labour turds from power.
