The Union Flag was created in 1606, three years after James VI of Scotland became James I of England, thus uniting the two kingdoms of England and Scotland. The cross of St. George and the cross of St. Andrew continued to be flown in England and Scotland respectively but royal protocol demanded a new flag to be flown at sea.

On 12 April 1606 a proclamation was issued:
"All our subjects in this our isle and kingdom of Great Britain and the members thereof, shall bear in their main top the red cross commonly called St George's Cross and the white cross commonly called St. Andrew's Cross joined together according to a form made by our heralds and sent to our Admiral to be published to our said subjects."

The new Union flag represented a superposition of the red cross of England and the white saltire of Scotland.

Many Scots were disturbed that the final design approved by the King had the St. George’s Cross superimposed over the St. Andrews’ Cross.

Jack and flag

Because the first role of the new flag was to be displayed at sea, it was flown from the “jack staff”, i.e. the “flagpole” on the bowsprit of warships, thus the flag earned the nickname of the “Union Jack” to which it is commonly but incorrectly refered. However to counter that, the English language is a fluid living aspect of our lives and the word “jack” has, for all but the pedants, passed into common and acceptable usage.

The flag that we know, love and use today is just over 200 years old; the addition of the St. Patrick cross representing Ireland was not made until 1801.

Both variants of the flag have been carried proudly in countless battles on every continent, and millions of lives have been lost in a bid to defend not just the flag itself, but more importantly those values that the flag represents; the sense of fair play, centuries of magnificent achievements in art, engineering, science and discovery, but moreover the love of personal liberty, freedom from tyranny to work, live, worship and raise one’s family unfettered by the bonds of repression - values which have been criminally stolen, perverted and swept aside by successive post war governments.

It’s OUR flag so let’s fly it with pride.

Finally - Nu Labour realise that there lack of policies on illegal immigration have led voters away from them and towards the BNP -

The growth of support for the British National Party is extremely disturbing. Margaret Hodge, the Minister of State for Employment, told this newspaper that eight out of ten white voters she canvassed in Barking and Dagenham admitted that they were considering voting for the BNP in the May local elections. It is a trend that has been noticed in several other working-class areas of Britain - and for which New Labour must take responsibility.
