MND-B Soldiers detain 3 suspected terrorists, find weapons cache

BAGHDAD – Soldiers from Multi-National Division – Baghdad’s 2nd Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, working with the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, detained three suspected terrorists and found a weapons cache at approximately 8 a.m. Saturday in the Doura district of Baghdad.

The Soldiers were conducting a search of a suspicious looking vehicle when they found a pistol.

The Soldiers continued searching the vehicle and located a secret compartment containing four rocket-propelled grenade rounds, four RPG boosters, a PKC rifle, a fragmentation grenade, 400 rounds of PKC ammunition, an AK-47 rifle with two full magazines of ammunition, a 9mm pistol and 200 7.62mm armor-piercing rounds.

The suspects, who all produced fake identification, were detained.

Coalition forces successfully target and capture terrorists

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition forces successfully targeted and captured another al-Qaeda in Iraq terrorist and four additional suspects during a raid in the vicinity of Yusufiyah early July 16.
Credible intelligence led the assault force to the known location of the targeted terrorist who was known to have ties to foreign fighters in the area. The individual is also reported to be extensively linked to senior al-Qaeda in Iraq leaders and several previous Coalition forces targets.

The troops quickly secured the target location and captured the detainees without incident.

CCCI convicts 10 insurgents

BAGHDAD – The Central Criminal Court of Iraq convicted 10 security detainees July 5 through July 11 for various crimes including using explosives, possession of illegal weapons and passport violations.

The trial court found Ra’ad Abdul Sattar Najim guilty of possession of illegal weapons, in violation of Coalition Provisional Authority Order 3, and sentenced him to 10 years imprisonment. Coalition forces apprehended the defendant after a search of his house and property revealed a 12.7mm machine gun, two 155mm rounds, gunpowder and an AK-47.

The trial court found Atallah obaid Erzaiq Al Sa’Adi and Yassin Mahmud Jibarah guilty of possession of illegal weapons, in violation of Coalition Provisional Authority Order 3, and sentenced them to 10 years imprisonment. Coalition forces apprehended the two defendants as they were preparing to emplace an improvised explosive device. A search of the scene revealed a spool of electrical wire, an anti-tank mine, three sticks of PE-4, 10 feet of detonation cord and two blasting caps.

The trial court found Thamir Abdullah Abdul Rahman guilty of illegal border crossing, in violation of Article 10 of the Iraqi Passport Law, and sentenced him to seven years imprisonment. Coalition forces apprehended the defendant while illegally entering Iraq.

The trial court found Karim Rasheed Anad, Arkan Ali Obeid, Khudari Taha Awad, Safar Mustafa Hafith, and Khalid Hamed Mahmoud guilty of using explosives, in violation of Article 346 of the Iraqi Penal Code, and sentenced them each to three years imprisonment. Coalition forces apprehended the five defendants after they were seen offloading artillery rounds from a bus and emplacing them in the ground. A search of the area revealed a chain of 10 155mm artillery rounds wrapped in detonation cord and time fuse.

The trial court found Monef Mohammed Isma’il Mohammed Al-Ta’ee guilty of possession of illegal weapons, in violation of Article 27 of the Iraqi Weapons Law, and sentenced him to two years imprisonment. Coalition forces apprehended the defendant after a search of his house revealed three AK-47s, a Lebanese passport, an Iraqi passport, a pro-mask with filter, five Iraqi Police shirts, two Iraqi Police arm brassards, a blue Kevlar police helmet and a switch timer.

Upon conviction, defendants will be turned over to the Iraqi Corrections Service to serve their sentences.

To date, the CCCI has held 1,287 trials of insurgents suspected of anti-Iraqi and anti-Coalition activities threatening the security of Iraq and targeting Multi- National Force – Iraq. These proceedings have resulted in 1,098 individual convictions with sentences ranging up to death.

Company unearths weapons cache, detains terror suspects

CAMP TAJI, Iraq – Soldiers from Company B, 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, uncovered a large weapons cache and detained a number of terror suspects.

Just days after assuming control of the western Baghdad region, the company unearthed a cache based on a tip received from a detainee.

In the cache, Soldiers found 32 homemade grenades, ten rocket-propelled grenade rounds, 500 Dragonov rounds, two cans 7.62mm ammunition, seven cans of grenade fuses, five RPG mortars, 12 AK-47 magazines and 2,500 7.62mm bullets.

In addition, just days prior to discovering the cache, Co. B was responsible for thwarting a vehicle-borne improvised-explosive device that was in its initial stages of preparation.

“This act undoubtedly saved many innocent Iraqi people and the lives of Coalition Forces,” said Staff Sgt. Andrew Atwater, battle noncommissioned officer for the battalion tactical operations center. “But the Soldiers didn’t stop there, the 2nd platoon apprehended two additional terrorist suspects who are now at the Internment Facility at Abu Ghraib.”

During the afternoon of July 5, 2nd Plt. detained two suspects exhibiting suspicious behavior near the Khan Dari Market. While manning a traffic control point in the Khan Dari area, Soldiers from the platoon stopped a vehicle with two individuals in it and began questioning them.

“Upon searching the vehicle, we discovered one AK-47 as well as a number of identification cards with different aliases and some money,” said 1st Lt. Jamar White, fire support officer, Co. B, 1st Bn., 22nd Inf. Regt.

Insurgent Leader Killed, 4 Captured In Iraqi Force Raid

BALAD – Iraqi Army forces killed an insurgent leader, Abdal-Ghafor, and captured four other suspected insurgents during an early morning raid on July 14 in northern Iraq.

As Iraqi forces and their coalition force advisers approached an objective near Muhallabiyah, southeast of Tall Afar, shots were fired at them. Iraqi forces reacted immediately, assaulting the objective killing Abdal-Ghafor (aka Abdal Rahman, aka Abu Ameen), a senior insurgent leader in this area, and capturing four more suspected insurgents.

Iraqi soldiers also seized the following weapons from the objective: one sniper rifle; five AK-47 assault rifles; one hand grenade; one rocket propelled grenade, or RPG round; one improvised explosive device, or IED consisting of three 155 millimeter artillery shells rigged together; approximately 600 rounds of AK-47 ammunition; various amounts of other caliber small arms ammunition; three blasting caps; and IED-making materials that included wires and batteries.

No Iraqi or coalition forces were injured during this operation.

Iraqi Security Forces Capture Insurgent Cell Leader in Baghdad

BALAD – Iraqi forces captured an insurgent cell leader, planner and ‘organizer’ in a southern Baghdad mosque compound during a security operation on July 13.

The Iraqi forces received small arms fire almost immediately upon arrival at the objective, a mosque compound in the Al Rasheed district of Baghdad. Soon after arriving, they captured an insurgent cell leader known for purchasing weapons and coordinating attacks against Iraqi and coalition forces.

A coalition force adviser said that all gunfire occurred outside of the mosque courtyard and was directed away from the mosque.

At no time during this operation did Iraqi or coalition forces enter the mosque itself.

Iraqi forces detained six other ‘persons of interest’ and seized the following weapons and military material: four RPK medium machine guns; three AK-47 assault rifles; approximately 150 rounds of AK-47 ammunition; several belts of ammunition for the RPK; one mortar weapon site; five body armor vests; and eight body armor plates.

According to the adviser, no visible damage was done to the mosque at the time Iraq and coalition force advisers departed the scene.

Iraqi forces also detained six other insurgents

No Iraqi or coalition forces were injured during this operation.

Airmen, MND-B Soldiers thwart terrorists emplacing IED

BAGHDAD – The combined efforts of U.S. Air Force Airmen and Multi-National Division – Baghdad Soldiers foiled the efforts of terrorists attempting to emplace an improvised-explosive device Monday south of Baghdad.

Airmen from the 11th Expeditionary Air Support Operations Squadron’s Joint Terminal Attack Controller unit notified Soldiers from 1st Battalion, 67th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, of reports from their F-15E Eagle pilots of four men digging beside a road.

The Soldiers moved to investigate the report and, upon arrival, saw the four suspects flee the area in a van.

The F-15E pilots departed the area to refuel and handed the operation over to an F-16 Falcon aircrew, who followed the suspects’ movements from the sky and spotted them abandoning their vehicle. The pilots continued to relay the information to the JTAC on the ground.

The JTAC was able to lead the Soldiers on the ground to the vehicle, where they discovered four 152mm rounds and detonation cord.

Iraqi army soldiers thwart kidnapping

BAGHDAD – Soldiers from 2nd Battalion, 2nd Brigade, 6th Iraqi Army Division, thwarted a kidnapping attempt on an Iraqi citizen at approximately 8:45 p.m. Sunday evening in central Baghdad.

Iraqi soldiers observed three armed men attempting the kidnapping and opened fire on them, wounding one of the assailants.

The three gunmen fled in an unmarked car, leaving the victim unharmed.

The victim was released on site.
