I see the following in the Cambridge Evening News.Islam cartoon student apologises for offence of expressing an opinion. An opinion that muslims found to be offensive and so free speech be damned the student had to apologise. Really makes you so proud that our universitys care not a jot about freedom of expression but instead see cow towing to political correctness as there number one priority.
A CAMBRIDGE University student who sparked a huge row when he published anti- Islamic material has issued a grovelling apology. The 19-year-old second-year Clare College student went into hiding after he printed a cartoon and material satirising religion in college magazine Clareification.
For his own safety and that of others, the student, who is British, has not been named. During the initial furore surrounding the publication he was taken out of his accommodation and put in a secure place.
Cartoons which had sparked worldwide protests in the Muslim community were reprinted in the edition. The college has promised to take action to prevent a similar incident occurring. Part of the student's apology read: "I understand that this edition has caused deep offence and hurt to very many people, both inside and outside Clare, through its derogatory references to individuals and also to various groups, including
women, Jews, Christians and Muslims."A Clare College spokesman said: "Because of the gravity of the situation and the
diversity of views expressed about the best way of handling it, the Dean of Students set in train procedures for convening the Court of Discipline."As events unfolded, however, a collective decision was taken to pursue instead a course of restorative justice and reconciliation. "The general and the guest editor were both formally reprimanded by the Dean of Students, and were also interviewed by the Master.
The guest editor was required to publish an apology, and also to meet any students who asked to see him as well as senior representatives of Cambridge religious communities."
A note of apology was distributed to all college members. The college is now arranging a meeting for next term to discuss the problem of maintaining free speech while avoiding offence. Guidelines for student publications are to be drawn up. The February edition of Clareification was renamed "Crucification" for a special edition on
religious satire, with the front page headline: "Ayatollah rethinks stance on misunderstood Rushdie."A cartoon used was the same one which caused riots across the world when it was printed in a Danish newspaper. Asim Mumtaz, president of Cambridge's Ahmadiyya Muslim Association, welcomed the apology, and said he was satisfied with the way the college had dealt with the situation. He said: "Religion teaches us that God is merciful and forgives, and we should forgive others as well, so long as this student realised the impact of their actions and that this was wrong. "This student has a full life ahead of him and if he had been thrown out of the university that would have had a huge impact."
Clare College has not yet reinstated funding for the magazine.
If those in academic life are not allowed to think outside certainAllah sent his favourite prophet (that's Mo) down from Paradise and told him to make a website to tell everybody in the Civilised World that Islam is not a morally corrupt and backward religion, hell bent on World domination and the eradication of all non-believers...Mo told him he couldn't, because it is! He sent him anyway.Mo (Peace Be Upon Him)So go read what Mo has created at The Official Website of Allah and laugh your little cotton socks of at the antics of the Crazy Gang and associated cartoons.
defined, socially acceptable parameters, then who is?
Some more dhimmi stuff here:
What are you looking at, dhimmi? "Don’t stare at Muslims says advice to schools," by Jason Allardyce and Abul Taher for the Sunday Times:
Pupils and teachers have been told by an official body not to stare at Muslims for fear of causing offence.
A document intended to educate against religious intolerance and sectarianism urges teachers to “make pupils aware of the various forms of Islamophobia, ie stares, verbal abuse, physical abuse”.
But Learning Teaching Scotland (LTS), which issued the advice to schools north of the border, has been criticised by politicians and Muslim leaders for going “over the top”.
The document states: “Some Muslims may choose to wear clothing or display their faith in a way that makes them visible. For example, women may be wearing a headscarf, and men might be wearing a skullcap. Staring or looking is a form of discrimination as it makes the other person feel uncomfortable, or as though they are not normal.”
You can't make this stuff up.
Osama Saeed, a spokesman for the Muslim Association of Britain, accused officials of going too far. “There are far more serious elements of Islamophobia. People look at all sorts of things — that can just be a glance. A glance and a stare are two different things — glances happen naturally when all sorts of things catch your eye whereas a stare is probably gawking at something.
“Personally I have not encountered much of a problem with people staring. I don’t know how you legislate for that.”
It does beg a legal definition of "staring." Three seconds? Five seconds? Was anyone carrying a stopwatch?
Murdo Fraser, deputy leader of the Scottish Conservatives, said: “In a multicultural society like ours there are people with all different forms of dress and I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect children in particular to look at those who are differently dressed from them. To describe this as a form of discrimination seems to go completely over the top.”
