There are many fine places to see in Newport, many fine places to eat and drink, where customers can feel at ease and be made welcome whilst getting fine customer service in and around the city of Newport but the Hornblower Pub is not one of them.
A quick visit to The Hornblower quickly showed how not to run a public house. Upon requesting a couple of bottles, we were asked if we would like glasses. When the barmaid produced said glasses, and it was commented upon that glasses were in need of a wash the comment from the barmaid was to "fuck off."
Yep ask for a clean glass and its "fuck off." A further comment about this to the landlady of the pub had her snap back with something along the lines of "If you don't like it then don't drink here."
Nice to see that they have customer service and well mannered staff.
Whilst this was going on I noticed that at the end of the bar, there was a huge growth of mold on the wall. Thankfully having chosen my beer in a bottle I was glad that I did not have to risk my health with anything that run through the no doubt unclean pumps.
After all should there be mold and a quick glance at the floor behind the bar showing another patch, then its not going to a clean cellar.
A dark dimly lit pub I first thought that the low lighting was to give some atmosphere, although upon looking at the dust on the tables I realised that this must be a ploy to hide the dirt.
I am sure that the mold spores, many of which were no doubt setting up a long and stable home on my unclean glass were just waiting to poison some unfortunate who risked drinking from a glass in this pub.
Upon leaving after our friendly visit to this dire public house, I noticed that the window - also in need of a clean I might add - had a few stickers boasting of awards from Camra. Although they were dated from the mid to late 1990's, I don't rate their chances at ever getting another one either.
As a Camra member myself I sure as hell won't be recommending them, and I shall be letting many others know how bad that pub is as well.
So if you are ever in the Newport area and fancy a beer and want to keep your health, then avoid the unclean Hornblower public house.
Thankfully a JD Wetherspoon is just down the round(about another 100 yards) and as much as I am no fan of large corporate pubs, at least they are clean and mold free. Mind a walk the other way leads up into town and you could do far worse than pay a visit to Ye Olde Murenger.
A traditional pub that has polite staff, clean glasses and a decent range of real ales. Alas no mold patches, dust or staff that tell customers to fuck off for daring to ask for a clean glass.
**Comments have been turned off on this and the other Hornblower post. This is due to some threats from people associated with the Hornblower. The sad fact is that it shows that they have to post anon, lacking the courage to put in contact details(which would then be passed onto the authorities).
It shows the sort of customer who now frequents this pub that they have to threaten and try to shut down free comment on a dire unclean pub, run by unfriendly staff /management.
Maybe that explains why on so many occasions when I walk past I see the pub empty.
Sadly for them this and the other post on the Hornblower pub in Newport will be staying put.
Oh and also I need to clarify one point, the gossip of the Hornblower Bamber although he claims he was there was not in the pub at that time.
Jussi's comments removed due to forthcoming legal action.
Update - the pub is now closed. Karen according to tales I have heard has had the bailiffs in to seize monies owed. Oh dear, according to some reports the pub may be sold off for development.

Too right - with a landlady whose nickname has been "alchy" for years, its good to see that her standards of hygeine are finally rubbing off in the pub.
Well said, if you are ever passing the pub do let "alchy" know what a nice review of her pub I have written.
If anyone has some constructive critcism on how things can be improved why don't they just have a chat with the bar manager Amy instead of whining amongst themselves? Generally the staff will speak as they're spoken to so if you're sarcastic, so shall they be too. Most of the people who go there have been going for years and seem to have no problems themselves, and there have been much worse owners before who've caused it to be closed.
Ok anon lets tackle a couple of points here.
1. We asked for glasses, and when they turned up not clean we were told to fuck off.
2. Upon taking the complaint to the land lady she commented that if we were not happy then we could leave.
3. We took her advise after drinking our bottled beers and so posted our comments on the dire service and unclean pub that is the Hornblower.
4. With regards the owners who caused it to be closed I assume you refer to Skinner and later on Ken(yes him of the string vest and whos hobby was taking photos of young girls)
5. You also state that a lot of customers have been going there for years, as did I for a long long time. Having seen Alan Angus and a few before and after him do there tour. (I left during the smelly rule of the pub by Ken Bates and his string vests)
The fact that they in their time may have been(and were) crap landlords doesnt excuse the piss poor customer service that we endured on our visit.
Well what a well written and articulate reply that was.
First off the site is not run by someone called Arthur.
As for the point about being cowards, well let me clarify that all the points were raised with the rather rude barstaff and also with Karen.
Really don't think that the Hornblower is worth wasting the price of a stamp on to be honest.
I rather liked the text type speak, very stylish. Oh and Coleg Gwent are running an English course at the moment I would really advise that you sign up for it.
That way you might be able to construct a reply that actually has some grammer and logic to it.
Oh and a final point, please advise the barstaff/management to give the pub a damn good clean as it needs it.
Jussi?
So does that mean someone is going to clean the pub? Whilst you're there you can also give a good clean out to your mouth and those of the other foul-mouthed staff.
Jussi
Just clean the glasses and sink in the pub! There's no shortage of scrubbers in the Hornblower - your mother has a reputation as a very good one. My mother died years ago so thank you for those heartwarming comments. CLEAN THE PUB!
This site is not written by Arthur but I was emailed over your libelous and laughable comments - are you speaking as an employee of the Hornblower? Only I want to make sure that I sue the right person/company for libel. CLEAN THE PUB!
Arfur
Who does not run this website.
Who has never been mugged in a bypass.
Never went to college, it was university.
etc etc, could go on denouncing your foul-mouthed lies but I think we have all seen your true character come out in the recent postings. JUST CLEAN THE FILTHY PUB YOU FOUL-MOUTHED SLAPPER!
JUSSI, just wanted you to know that if you google hornblower pub, this post comes up as No.3 in google.
The more you add about it the higher ranking it gets, so lots of people- that includes the few in the Blower who can as well - can read this and decide to drink elsewhere.
Jussi, the pub does need a clean. It is filthy.
The blower makes me laugh, it has real ale camra stickers in the window from years ago.
Bet they have never been cleaned just like the lines in the pub.
Last time I was there I got a case of gutrot from the yeast in the beer, or woz that from Karen?
Just to add insult to injury, the landlady's youngest daughter, who i believe is the person writing the filth about an arthur.... is only 16! 16 and serving in a Pub!Work that one out.....you cant even go in for a pint without having some gobby teenager with a stinking attitude, giving you grief!
