Trevor Phillips(history revisionist) - Spanish Armada defeated by Ottomans

Trevor Phillips, has told a fringe meeting at the Labour conference that British history is insufficiently "inclusive", on account of the fact that it is dominated by white people, and has said that it needs to be rewritten, to rectify this fault.

**What Mr Phillips needs to understand is that history in the UK is dominated by white people, us bukra(old slang term used by American blacks to describe whites) making up the majority of the population here in the UK.

He said Muslims were also part of the national story and "sometimes we have to go back into the tapestry and insert some threads that were lost".

He quoted the example of the Spanish Armada, which was held up by the Turks at the request of Queen Elizabeth I.

"It was the Turks who saved us," Mr Phillips told a Labour fringe meeting.

**Was it really Mr Phillips? Well in fact no. According to Dr
Simon Adams, co-author of "England, Spain and the Grand Armada" he argues the Ottoman Turks were not threatening the Spanish in the Mediterranean. Queen Elizabeths spymaster Walsingham did send a letter but the Turks were not a problem to Spain at that point.
  • "The Walsingham letter had been sent in 1584 or 1585 and although England might have hoped the Turks would cause the Spanish problems, nothing really happened," he told Reuters.
  • "The Turks were not really doing anything (against Spain) in 1588. They were busy in the near east," added the University of Strathclyde academic.
  • Adams said the Armada failed because the expedition was poorly planned and the English had an effective navy helped by favourable weather.
  • In fact a quick check of historical facts, that's things actually happened for the revisionists like Mr Phillips will show that Ottoman naval power by the time of the Spanish armada was in decline. The sultan having lost all but 30 of its ships and as many as 30,000 men at the battle of Lepanto in 1571, and some Western historians have held it to be the most decisive naval battle anywhere on the globe since the battle of Actium in 31 BC. source(wikipedia battle of Lepanto- 1571)
  • By the time of the Spanish Armada in 1588, Ottoman naval power had still not recovered. In fact, Lepanto was considered by some earlier historians to signal the beginning of Ottoman decline as a power in Europe. Mr Phillips, if he cares to read what really happened in the naval battle that defeated Spain he can read it here: Spanish Armada wikipedia page.
  • Ottoman Sultan at that point was Murad III(1574–95) a chap who's reign was marked by wars with both Iran in the east and Austria in the West, as well as Ottoman economic decline and institutional decay. While his empire declined he could be found relaxing in the harem, having bought more than 1200 of the most beautiful girls available at slave markets for his enjoyment. He sired 103 children.
Mr Phillips said he had also been persuaded of the need for a written constitution, saying the UK needed to be "more explicit in our understanding about how we treat each other".

He said population changes and immigration were happening at unprecedented rate and there was "no going back".

So it was no longer enough to assume people would inherit the values which bound the country together.

Speaking at an event organised by The Smith Institute, the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Young Foundation, he said it was important that new arrivals learned English.

But he also stressed the importance of celebrating Britain's "human rights culture" and said the government had to be more specific about what it meant to be British - rather than simply stressing values such as "freedom" which were universal.

"We have to have a more explicit set of understandings which we can all share about how we treat each other and we talk to each other and they have to be based on real values.

"I think the prime minister is right to talk about values but I think what is important is not the abstract values. Freedom is shared by all sorts of people."

If there was a written constitution it would have to be "an expression which is native and right for us".

He also stressed the importance of a national story in forging a shared sense of identity.

"I think we have to rewrite, redevelop, our national story so that it is inclusive.

"And what I mean by that in practice is this: not that we have to re-write what we are but sometimes we have to go back into the tapestry and insert some threads that were lost."

He said the abolition of the slave trade, for example, could be retold as being part of the English radical tradition.

"Part of the job of heritage is to cognitize - give physical existence - to that national story.

"And if there is a practical thing, I would say it is that we need to revisit some parts of that national heritage. to rewrite some parts of that national story to tell the whole story.

"When we talk about the Armada it's only now that we are beginning to realise that part of it is Muslims," Mr Phillips told the meeting.

"It was the Turks who saved us, because they held up Armada at the request of Elizabeth I.

"Now let's rewrite that story, let's use our heritage to rewrite that story so it is truly inclusive.

"That's the reason for this so we have an identity which brings us together, which binds us in the stormy times that we are going to have in the next century."

Nice bit on dhimmi Trevor at: http://www.jihadwatch.org/dhimmiwatch/archives/018268.php

  • Something Mr Phillips might need to look up, this shows the moslim influence on Europe and on the UK although I can't see him crowing so loudly about this:... As Ottoman influence in the Eastern Mediterranean declined in the late 1500s, successive emperors sponsored the Barbary pirates of North Africa, who had already been plundering the coasts of Europe for 100 years. Between the beginning of the 16th Century and the early 1800s between one and two million Europeans were captured and sold into slavery by these Muslim raiders, including several thousand Britons; clearly the Ottomans forgot to tell their proxies that we were their allies.

**So guard your history books they look likely to become collectors items, if its down to people like Mr Phillips and the New Labour revisionist history crowd our past will become a watered down version of the One Thousand & One Arabian Nights.

So I say that Trevor Phillips is either lying and a history revisionist like the holocaust deniers, or he is just plain mistaken over his historical facts, which is it Mr Phillips?

Maybe he could have a chat with David Irvine and they could sit down together and re-write the whole of history, leaving out all us po' bukra white folks and of course the Jewish Holocaust.

By the time of the Spanish Armada in 1588, Ottoman naval power had still not recovered.

Of course you are right in general, but it's worth noting that soon after Lepanto the Ottomans rebuilt their fleet to comparable size. The key differential is that naval strength does not arise merely from building ships. Skills have to be relearnt. The real defeat lay in that the Ottomans had lost their psychological advantage: No longer was it believed "they can't be defeated"

Fidothedog said...

True they had built a fleet up, however many of the skilled sailors they had before lay dead on the sea bottom off the coast of Lepanto, oh and the Spanish etc had been building bigger ships - with larger cannon - as opposed to the increasingly anchient oared vessels used by the Ottomans.

The other main point was that the sultan had even by the time of the Armada fallen behind the west in military terms and had over extended the empire

Cheers for the links by the way.
