A rattled Gordon Brown today admitted he made a blunder over the snap election that never was.
Responding to mockery of his decision to cancel the election at the last moment, the Prime Minister confessed: "Perhaps I should have made it earlier."
Mr Brown endured a torrid ordeal as he brought forward his monthly press conference at No10 in an attempt to face headon criticism of his decision.
He was subjected to far more hostile and mocking questioning than usual.
Asked about the damage done to the Government, he conceded he should have handled it differently. "I think your weekend has been better than mine," he confessed to one questioner.
