An official at the Muslim Council of Britain has repeated his view that Osama bin Laden was a "freedom fighter" when he fought the Russians in Afghanistan in the 1980s.
Inayat Bunglawala, the council's media secretary who has been appointed by the Home Office as a "convener" of a government working group to combat extremism, told the Financial Times: "He [Mr bin Laden] was a freedom fighter. He was regarded in large sections of the Muslim world before 2001 as a freedom fighter for what he had done in Afghanistan."
He added: "Obviously I don't hold those views now."
Asked whether he regretted his description of Mr bin Laden before the September 11 attacks, he replied: "I don't. At the time he was."
Inayat Bunglawala also has a problem with Israel: He has deflected comments he has made saying that the British media was "Zionist-controlled". Along with comments like "traditional Zionist tactic" aimed to "silence critics of Israel"He has also praised the blind Sheikh Omar Abdel-Rahman as "courageous." in Private Eye, after Abdel-Rahman's arrest on charges of masterminding the bombing of the WTC in 1993.
In May of 2006, Charles Johnson, the owner of political blog Little Green Footballs, received an e-mailed death threat that he traced back to Reuters, where Mr. Bunglawala is employed. Bunglawala replied saying it was "Zionists...up to mischief"
Bunglawala opposed a government proposal to ban Hizb ut Tahrir.
In an inteview on hate literature and propaganda, Bunglawala justified such material being sold in Islamic bookshops on the ground that material of similar nature is sold by any other religious book shop.
Why am I writting about him, well he has been appointed to a government role in charge of rooting out extremism in the wake of last month's suicide bombings in London.
And this arse has been appointed by New Labour to help root out islamic extremism here in the UK, well I guess if anyone is going to be able to spot it and identify with it, sorry identify it then it will be Bunglawala.
Not so much a poacher turned gamekeeper, but a poacher turned gamekeeper and still a poacher.
