The majority of young people want to get hitched but marriage is just a dream for many of Britain's poorest families, it has been claimed.
Seven out of ten people would like to tie the knot but walking down the aisle is too expensive, a report by think-tank Civitas claims.
Areas 'notorious for the economic breakdown of once-thriving working-class industries' had the highest proportion of cohabiting parents, while marriage was common in towns and cities with mostly middle class families.
For example, women who live in areas with high unemployment are most likely to put off getting married until they find a suitable partner who has a job.
'Many young people idealise marriage', said researcher Anastasia de Waal.
'If they don't find the perfect partner or if their employment or housing situation means they are not in a good position to get married, they are likely to postpone marriage or take it off the cards altogether.
'This has the effect of lowering the marriage rate but doesn't mean young people don't want to get married.'
'Young people have high ideals but also very practical concerns when it comes to marriage.'
And – contrary to the belief that cohabitation has replaced marriage – nearly eight out of ten of couples who live together said the planned to marry.
**Well what do you expect with a bunch of no hope socialists in charge of the nation who dispise marriage as some sort of fudalist hang over from the dark ages, unless its gay wedding of course and what with ever spiraling costs it will be out of the reach of many of the poor.
Besides if you are single you can both claim benefits rather than having them cut if you are married!
