It came as the Pakistani president, Ali Asif Zardari, acknowledged that the Taliban were present "in huge amounts" of his country.
Most of the dead militants - believed to be linked to al-Qaeda - were Uzbeks, said a spokesman for the Taliban.
"Our people have informed us that at least 25 people were killed. It could be more," said the spokesman.
"Around 50-60 mujahideen have been living there for a week. All of them were Uzbeks."
The province is the centre of power for Baitullah Mehsud, the head of Pakistan's Taliban, who was accused of aiding the assassination of Benazir Bhutto in December 2007....
