Britain was left lagging behind Germany and France today as Europe's two biggest economies officially came out of recession for the first time in a year.
The development will embarrass Gordon Brown and Chancellor Alistair Darling who last year claimed that Britain was 'better placed than other economies to withstand the slowdown in the global economy.'
The Bank of England yesterday delivered a grim warning about the state of the British economy with Governor Mervyn King warning that the recession is 'deeper' than officials feared.
Shares across Europe surged on the positive news from France and Germany with the FTSE up by almost 1 per cent.
Best placed Gordon claimed, as with so much Gordons claims have no basis in reality.
