The children’s television character Basil Brush is at the centre of a police investigation after an allegation that an episode of the programme was racist towards gipsies. A complaint was made after an episode of the long-running BBC show aired in February this year, which featured a gipsy character selling pegs and lucky heather and a joke about a fortune teller stealing Basil’s wallet. Gipsies have reported the show to Northamptonshire Police alleging that the storyline is racist towards their community and way of life.

I wonder if the pikeys stole the TV and electricity to be able watch the show?

Marco has been condemned by the racial equality watchdog after he used the word "pikey" on his ITV show.

His petition - which secured almost 1,000 signatures before he handed it over to Swansea Council - reads: "Petition against any proposed itinerant travellers' site within Llansamlet and the Swansea Vale area."

The CRE, which receives £ 19million funding from the Government every year, claims the use of the term 'itinerant travellers' in his campaign material breaches section 31 of the Race Relations Act.

Ministers have launched a legal battle to curb coroners' criticisms of the Ministry of Defence at inquests on British troops.

The move follows outspoken verdicts on deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan from Oxfordshire assistant deputy coroner Andrew Walker.

Lawyers for the MoD yesterday asked the High Court to stop Mr Walker accusing it of "serious failures".

He has used such terms repeatedly to describe lack of equipment or fatally flawed procedures.

The MoD move brought a furious reaction from campaigners and bereaved relatives.

They accused Defence Secretary Des Browne of trying to gag coroners and "censor" their findings.

Roger Smith, director of the campaign group Justice, said: "It is the coroner's job to investigate deaths and if they find serious failings by any authority - including the MoD - it is their job to say so.

**Well love here are a few pointers, first off I - and I am not going to labor the point of London residents who live on less than the 23K costs allowance - and many others out there have to buy all our furniture ourselves, all our food, pay all our bills and cover all our expense on less than what you as an MP get as an allowance.

Four penny tax increase will do nothing to curb binge drinking but will hit poorest the hardest

The Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) has hit out at the Chancellor's decision to increase beer duty by 4 pence a pint in today's Budget, together with annual increases of 2% above inflation for the next four years. The consumer group claims that the increase will lead to at least 20 pence on a pint over the bar, fuelling pub closures and increasing unregulated drinking as more choose to drink at home or on the streets. This is the first time ever that beer tax has increased by 4 pence - a rise of 13%!

CAMRA recently announced that 57 pubs are lost permanently every month as the price differential between pubs and supermarkets widens. Pubs provide a regulated environment for people to enjoy alcohol socially and responsibly.

Mike Benner, Chief Executive of CAMRA said, “The Chancellor has failed to recognise that well-run community pubs are the solution to Britain's binge drinking problems. This budget will do nothing to stop binge drinking, but it will lead to pub closures on a huge scale, widen the gap between supermarket and pub prices and encourage smuggling and cross-border shopping. It's a great big nail whacked ruthlessly into the coffin of the British pub.”

Chancellor Alistair Darling has dropped a budget bombshell by unveiling a swingeing 4p rise in duty on a pint of beer and pledged to raise duty on alcohol by 2% above inflation for the next four years.

This year, Darling has increased alcohol duty by 6% above the rate of Inflation.

The move will add up 12p to 15p to a pint of beer and ensure beer prices rise by well above inflation for the foreseeable future.

Recent wholesale beer price increases from brewers mean the average print will have jumped in price by 25p since the start of the year. Cider is also up by 3p a litre. Duty on a bottle of wine will increase by 14p and 55p will be added to bottle of spirits. Darling said that the average price of a bottle of wine in the supermarket had dropped since 1997 from £4.45 to £4.

Rob Hayward, British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA) chief executive, said: "Government is punishing all beer drinkers rather than tackling the minority of drunken hooligans. But Government tax policy is fuelling Britain¹s binge drink problem by driving people away from beer, out of the pub into the arms of the deep discounting supermarkets."

"They don't pay beer duty and don't allow brewers to pass it on, so their rock bottom prices will remain unaffected by this tax hike." He added: "The millions of people who enjoy beer have just been hit by a £50.5 million a month tax raid on their family budgets."

By aiming a tax hike at beer, the Chancellor is shooting himself in the foot. Treasury revenues will continue to fall, pubs will continue to close and beer sales sink further.

Every single day, the Treasury is losing over £1 million in beer taxes and four pubs are closing.

People are now drinking 1 million fewer pints a day compared with last year. That trend will continue.

"It¹s a decision doomed to failure ­ bad for taxpayers, beer, pubs and bad for the Treasury as well." Opposition leader David Cameron said his party would have targeted duty increases to decrease binge-drinking.

John Ellis of the Crown Inn, a freehold wet-only pub in Oakengates, Shropshire, said: "It's a binge drinkers budget, he rattled through it very fast and all he could talk about was the price of wine in supermarkets - they're going to punish responsible drinkers. Supermarkets will continue to sell at below cost price despite this measure - it's the on-trade, which provides a safe and responsible drinking atmosphere, that's going to be hit. The government is promoting unsupervised drinking, it¹s as simple as that. Every facet of the trade needs to come together and fight or this is the beginning of the end for the British pub."

Affirming that attempts by governments to legislate costly regulations on industry and individual citizens to encourage CO2 emission reduction will slow development while having no appreciable impact on the future trajectory of global climate change. Such policies will markedly diminish future prosperity and so reduce the ability of societies to adapt to inevitable climate change, thereby increasing, not decreasing, human suffering;

Noting that warmer weather is generally less harmful to life on Earth than colder:

Hereby declare:

That current plans to restrict anthropogenic CO2 emissions are a dangerous misallocation of intellectual capital and resources that should be dedicated to solving humanity's real and serious problems.

That there is no convincing evidence that CO2 emissions from modern industrial activity has in the past, is now, or will in the future cause catastrophic climate change.

John Prescott is heading European human rights delegation to Armenia in an attempt to defuse the country's growing political crisis.

The Hull East MP's two-day trip starts tomorrow at the request of the president of the Council of Europe's Parliamentary Assembly.

In a statement, the Council of Europe said Mr Prescott would "assess the post-electoral situation" in Armenia and "explore possibilities for defusing the current political crisis and promoting dialogue".

Mr Prescott was the head of an official observer team monitoring the Armenian presidential elections in February.

Last weekend a state of emergency was declared after a wave of violence swept the country.

A Labour MP was forced to resign when his wife and daughter were caught using a rail pass for his use only.

Mr Mardy Jones broke the rules by sending two tickets to his wife and daughter.

They boarded a steam train at Pontypridd but were confronted by ticket inspectors, who discovered that one of the tickets was six weeks out of date.

Mr Mardy Jones confessed that the family were short of cash. MPs were paid only £360 a year then.

Charges were pressed and the MP resigned his seat a day before the case was due to come to court. Parris and Maguire report that he pleaded guilty to transferring two non-transferable tickets to his wife and helping her to travel without paying a fare.

Mr and Mrs Mardy Jones were fined £2 each at Marylebone Court. He was ordered to pay £31 10s in costs or face 42 days in jail.

The magistrate, Hay Halkett, told reporters at the court: "It is rather disgraceful to find an MP involved in a case like this.

"However disgusting this case is, and I think it is very disgusting, we have to remember that Mr Mardy Jones has risen to his present position from a coal mine."

**This happened in 1930, when MP's still had a small amount of decency about them. These days short of getting caught flagrante delicio in a child porn scandal an MP would see no reason for resigning.

One has to wonder about the moral perspective of the ruling New Labour government here in the UK. One the one hand they are happy to allow in such morally enlightened people as Yusuf al Qaradawi.

A man who and I quote the BBC here: "has distanced himself from suicide attacks in the West but he has consistently defended Palestinian suicide attacks against Israelis."

Yet our dire Home Sec. Jacqui Smith a woman totally removed from the very people see represents has chosen to ban from our fair Isles the deputy leader of Israel’s centre-right Likud party, Moshe Feiglin.

And he has been informed of his exclusion even though he had no plans to visit the UK.

The best irony is - although this will be lost on Ms Smith who is not the sharpest pencil in the box - that she used powers invoked after the July 2005 London bombings. Those were bombings by - home grown - moslem terrorists.

In a two-page letter sent to Mr Feiglin’s office in Ginot Shomron, an unnamed Border and Immigration Agency official, writing on Ms Smith’s behalf, cited articles written by Mr Feiglin and said she had “personally directed” that he be banned.

The letter said: “It is considered that you are seeking to provoke others to serious criminal acts and fostering hatred which might lead to inter-community violence in the UK.

“In light of these factors, the Home Secretary is satisfied you should be excluded from the UK on the grounds that your exclusion is conducive to the public good.” There is no right of appeal.

The Home Office would say nothing more about why or how the decision was made, other than to say that Ms Smith can exclude people whether or not they have applied to come to Britain. But it does take into account relevant information supplied by other government departments and agencies.

Mr Feiglin said: “This is a British government problem, not mine. However, if somebody in Britain feels comfortable enough to do something like that, it should turn on some serious red lights in any British citizen who cares about democracy. Britain and America are letting in the real terrorists — remember [Iranian] President Ahmadinejad was allowed to speak at an American university.”

In a swipe at the government’s refusal to exclude Ibrahim Mousawi, the editor of a Hizbollah journal who has been in Britain on a speaking tour, Mr Feiglin went on: “I almost feel honoured, because of the way that the British government is behaving, to be marked as the bad guy by a government that supports terror. I see it almost as a compliment.”

He has visited Britain once before, 15 years ago, when he entered and left without hindrance.

Mr Feiglin said the letter “came out of the blue”. He considered it might be a clever forgery perpetrated by political opponents. He was not surprised when told by the JC that it was genuine.

“This is all very strange because I have no plans to visit Britain either in the short or long term. I have never been banned from anywhere else. In fact I am giving a lecture in Canada at the end of this month,” he said.

The Proms attract too narrow a section of society, culture minister Margaret Hodge has suggested in a speech.

She praised "icons of a common culture" from Coronation Street to the Angel of the North and said culture could "enhance a sense of shared identity".

But the Proms was one of several major cultural events many people did not feel comfortable attending, she said.

Well that's her problem, maybe she would be happier with some ethnic steel bands attending. Then again this is the vile woman who was accused of ignoring child abuse when she was head of Islington council.

Children's Minister Margaret Hodge has said sorry to the sex abuse victim she branded "extremely disturbed".

Mrs Hodge said she would like to "apologise unreservedly" to Demetrious Panton for the description.

She had made the remarks in a letter of complaint to the BBC about an inquiry into a child abuse scandal in London's Islington where she was council leader.

But Mr Panton said Mrs Hodge should "do the decent thing" and resign. The Conservatives also said she should go....

"I wish you all the best for the future and am genuinely sorry to have contributed to your suffering," the minister added.

Mrs Hodge led Islington Council from 1982 to 1992, when it emerged that children in the council's care had been abused.

She has been accused of failing to act, despite receiving warnings - an allegation she denies.

The government are attempting to peddle the ID cards through a "soft sell" route. According to Sky News, dire Home Sec. Jacqui Smith is trying to soft sell us the idea of ID cards.

The indications are that she will try a new approach to convincing the public to support the proposals.

Forget the 'hard sell' - it looks like the Home Office is trying the 'soft soap' instead.

A source who has seen a draft of the speech has described the tone as "conciliatory".

Instead of government ministers and police officers talking tough and insisting they need Britons to carry ID cards to beat terrorism, the emphasis will shift to persuading people they be missing out if they fail to sign up to the scheme.

Thanks all the same but every instinct tells me that you and the rest of this government - unable to keep our information safe - are not to be trusted, so I will pass if it's all the same.

"Entitlement" seems to be the buzzword and the card is being portrayed as the way to access state benefits and public services.

The timetable for implementing the cards is much clearer too.

So lets get this right, their arguement is that we need to pay for an ID card to access services that I am already entitled to and have already paid for through my taxes over the years! An of course when people start using the cards you can bet that every agency will start brow beating its "customers" - thats me and you, to start using the ID Card to speed up the process.

Despite the fact that both a driving license and UK passport are fine for dealing with the private sector, both are photo ID and both suitable for 99.9% of agencies and private companies.

Denmark's security services have provided protection to namesakes of the Danish cartoonist behind controversial cartoons of Mohammed.

There are 82 Kurt Westergaards living in Denmark but only one of them is the man who life is under daily threat because of his caricatures of the founder of Islam.

However, some of other 81 "Kurts" scattered across Denmark have also received mistaken identity death threats because they share the same name as the illustrator.

One, a businessman from the Danish town of Aabenraa, has been offered protection by Denmark's intelligence agency, the PET, after receiving multiple death threats.

"The worst thing was that they also called my three children. They wanted to kidnap my family and murder me," he said.

Three weeks ago police arrested three men for conspiracy to murder the real Kurt Westergaard. He joked to media yesterday that "at least it takes some of the immense pressure off of me".

"As one of my friends put it, it's too bad for the Kurts," he said.

Cartoon caricatures of Islam's founding Prophet Mohammed were published in Danish newspapers two years ago triggering Muslim riots and violence which claimed the lives of over 50 people.

Ten years of socialist rule have made a complete mess of the UK's finances.

Exactly ten years ago the FTSE 100 stood at 5,782. Last night the stock market closed at 5,767. Investors have seen the stock market and the value of their pensions decline during the ten years of New Labour's economic management under Gordon Brown.

By comparison the Dow was at 8,569 on March 6, 1998 and last night it closed at 12,213.

Illegal immigrants are bypassing supposedly foolproof border controls by simply climbing over a fence at Calais.

The farcical discovery was made by Peers during a visit to the French port - where migrants assemble to try to sneak into the UK by lorry.

The House of Lords committee said inadequate fencing at Calais was allowing "determined" illegals to get into a "clean" lorry park - where vehicles have already undegone checks involving heartbeat and breath sensors and scanners which can see through vehicles.

Last year 1,300 were found in the parking area, but critics say thousands more are likely to have made it to the UK.

More than 800,000 vehicles pass through Calais each year.

It is hugely embarrassing for the Home Office, which has spent millions providing hi-tech scanning equipment in Calais and other European ports.

The heartbeat sensors, CO2 probes and "passive millimetre wave" scanners which can see through vehicles have all been provided at the UK taxpayer's expense. The equipment has been operating at Calais since October 2004.

Once these checks have been cleared, lorries park near the ferry berths and the House of Lords EU Committee on Home Affairs noticed the inadequate fencing.

The chairman of the committee, Lord Jopling, said: "Our visit to the juxtaposed British and French border controls at Calais showed that there are excellent new technologies deployed to prevent illegal migration to the UK.

"However, we were surprised to find inadequate fencing, the replacement of which might prevent 1,500 illegal immigrants a year from boarding lorries bound for Britain. This would be entirely in British interests.

"You should see an ID card like a passport in-country."

The day of us "free citizens" here in the UK having to show our papers to the police, government officials and anyone - in order to get anything done - are creeping ever nearer.

Internal passports were used in the Soviet Union for identification of persons for various purposes. In particular, passports were used to control and monitor the place of residence by means of propiska, a regulation in the Soviet Union designed to control internal population movement by binding a person to his or her permanent place of residence. Officially, propiska was introduced for statistical reasons: since in the planned economy of the Soviet Union the distribution of goods and services was centralized, the overall distribution of population was to be monitored. For example, a valid propiska was necessary to receive higher education or medical treatment. Also, since there was no private ownership of real estate, having a propiska for an address meant that you had the right to live there.

The context was her saying that 80% of people already have a passport, and she immediately qualified it by saying that ID cards weren't "entitlement cards" merely "an easier way to access services" - but, that is just a very small step to take.
