TWO TERRORISTS KILLED DURING RAID NEAR BAYJI
BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition Forces killed two terrorists and detained two suspected terrorists Tuesday morning during a raid near Bayji that targeted individuals associated with a suspected senior leader of an al-Qaeda in Iraq network.
After arriving at the targeted building, ground forces witnessed four armed individuals fleeing the scene. Coalition Forces pursued and detained two of the suspects as the other two armed individuals began firing at the ground forces. Ground forces returned fire, killing the two terrorists.
This is another step closer to defeating al-Qaeda in Iraq and helping establish a safe and peaceful Iraq. Coalition Forces will continue to target not only senior al-Qaeda in Iraq leaders, but all terrorists regardless of their titles or positions within the community. They will be identified, captured and prosecuted for their crimes.
Multi-National Division – Baghdad PAO
Soldiers from the 5th Brigade, 6th Iraqi Army Division, and MND-B’s 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, detained 23 suspected terrorists Sunday for their suspected involvement with death squads and setting up illegal checkpoints. All suspects were detained for further questioning.
In a separate incident, Soldiers from 172nd SBCT detained a suspected terrorist at approximately 10:15 a.m. Saturday after discovering a weapons cache located underneath the Al Hibna Electrical substation in Kadhamiyah, a neighborhood in northern Baghdad. The cache contained four mortar rounds, a 60mm mortar tube, three G3 magazines, an RPK machinegun, a PKC assault rifle, two AK-47 assault rifle, a G3 handgun, approximately 3,000 7.62mm rounds of ammunition and four grenade fuses.
The suspect was apprehended and held for further questioning.
Iraqi Security Forces continue to provide security to FallujahMulti-National Corps – West PAO
CAMP FALLUJAH, Iraq – Iraqi Security Forces searched the Fallujah General Hospital today as part of their continuous operations to maintain the security and safety of the citizens of Fallujah.
The hospital was searched after intelligence indicated that it was being used as a potential safe haven for insurgents. The Iraqi Security Forces, with the support of Coalition Forces, entered the Fallujah General Hospital to ensure that the facility continues to be a safe place for the people of Fallujah to receive medical treatment.
No insurgent activity was uncovered. The hospital staff and patients cooperated with the Iraqi Security Forces. The visit was completed without incident.
Coalition forces repel attack
Multi-National Division – North PAO
KIRKUK, Iraq – Iraqi security and Coalition forces came under fire Nov. 6 when anti-Iraqi forces attacked a joint Iraqi and U.S. patrol near Dugmat, a small town about 45 kilometers south of Kirkuk, and fled to a compound where the fighting continued.
The fighting started during an ambush of a joint Iraqi and U.S. patrol. It is unclear how many AIF were in the area at the time of the ambush, but estimates put the number between 25-30.
After contact, AIF dispersed in several directions. One group of vehicles was tracked and attacked by Coalition attack helicopters, while another group fled to a compound outside the town. This group was heavily armed with machine guns, rocket propelled grenades and a large stockpile of ammunition.
Coalition Force attack helicopters, ground troops and close air support aircraft engaged the enemy, destroying their vehicles and hiding positions with precision fires, killing eight, capturing 14 and neutralizing various weapons and munitions. Coalition forces sustained one member killed and three others wounded in action.
Iraqi Security and Coalition Forces continue to exploit the area for further intelligence in order to bring peace and stability to the region.
MND-B Soldiers kill 38 terrorists, wound 9
Multi-National Division – Baghdad PAO
BAGHDAD – Multi-National Division – Baghdad Soldiers killed 38 terrorist and wounded nine after a firefight erupted in northern Baghdad Nov. 5.
Soldiers from 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 506th Regimental Combat Team, MND-B, were attacked by small-arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades from both the north and south of Forward Operating Base Apache.
The MND-B Soldiers immediately responded to their attackers, killing 38 and wounding nine in a nearly 1.5 hour-long battle with the terrorists.
After investigating the area of the attack, the Soldiers discovered an AK-47 assault rifle and three hand grenades. The terrorist casualties were all witnessed by MND-B Soldiers, but many of the bodies and weapons were removed from the scene before MND-B Soldiers could discern the identities of the terrorists and confiscate weapons.
There were no reports of injuries to MND-B personnel, but an MND-B humvee was damaged during the battle.
RAMADI, IRAQ – Coalition Forces killed four terrorists and detained 48 suspected terrorists during a raid of a known al-Qaeda meeting place in Ramadi Tuesday afternoon.
During the raid, Coalition ground forces encountered two hostile men fleeing from the scene in a vehicle. Despite repeated requests to surrender, the two men continued to threaten Coalition Forces. Coalition Forces killed the two terrorists. Upon searching the terrorists’ vehicle, Coalition Forces discovered rocket-propelled grenades, machine guns, grenades and suicide vests.
Coalition Forces were later engaged outside nearby buildings and ground forces killed two more terrorists. During the raid a male civilian received a minor wound to the neck and Coalition Forces provided medical care on the scene.
This area is known to be frequented by foreign fighters, and an al-Qaeda senior leader has launched suicide vehicle borne improvised explosive devices at Coalition and Iraqi checkpoints in the past.
Coalition Forces carried out the operation after careful, deliberate analysis to mitigate any collateral damage.
These operations serve as a message to terrorist elements that they will not be permitted to operate freely or find safe havens in Iraq.
TEN FOREIGN FIGHTER FACILITATORS KILLED; IRAQI POLICEMAN RESCUED
BAGHDAD, IRAQ – Coalition Forces killed ten al-Qaeda terrorists associated with foreign fighter organizations today near Muqdadiyah and rescued a kidnapped Iraqi Policeman.
Acting upon numerous credible intelligence sources, Coalition Forces launched an operation to detain individuals running a known terrorist cell. At the objective, Coalition Forces made contact with and killed 10 terrorists carrying AK-47s, a rocket propelled grenade launcher, and a machine gun. Once inside the building, Coalition Forces found a hostage blindfolded and shackled to the floor. The hostage revealed he was an Iraqi Policeman that was taken hostage six days before with two other Iraqi Policemen and was being held ransom to raise money for the terrorist cell. He said the two other policemen had been ransomed earlier by the terrorists.
Coalition Forces also found a 60 mm mortar system with ammunition, a sniper rifle, numerous IED components, a significant amount of ammunition and other terror related material.
Ground units destroyed the munitions before these items could cause any harm to innocent victims
The al-Qaeda cell was responsible for bringing foreign fighters into the Muqdadiyah area. These terrorists and other foreign terrorist facilitators are killing innocent Iraqis daily and preventing the peace and stability Iraqi citizens deserve. This well coordinated operation was designed to eliminate the terrorist threat and further the degradation of the al-Qaeda terrorist network.
BAGHDAD IA, MND-B Soldiers detain 17 terrorists
Multi-National Division – Baghdad PAOBAGHDAD – Iraqi Army and Multi-National Division – Baghdad Soldiers detained 17 terrorists at approximately 9 p.m. Monday in central Baghdad.
The Soldiers from the 5th Brigade, 6th Iraqi Army Division, and MND-B’s 4th Squadron, 14th Cavalry Regiment, 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, conducted a combined cordon and search in the Karkh neighborhood of central Baghdad to capture members of a suspected death squad.
The Soldiers apprehended 17 suspects, all of whom were identified by witnesses as members of a death squad operating in central Baghdad.
There were no reported injuries to IA or MND-B personnel or damage to their equipment.
REMARKS BY U.S. AMBASSADOR ZALMAY KHALILZAD DURING U.S. MID-TERM ELECTION RECEPTION FOR IRAQI JOURNALISTS NOVEMBER 8, 2006 BAGHDAD, IRAQ
Good morning. I want to welcome the distinguished Iraqis who are here. I see several members of Parliament -- welcome. From the government, Mr. Ali al-Dabbagh, welcome to you. And from the Fourth Estate, as we say in the United States, I see a number of journalists -- welcome. And, I want to thank all the American colleagues from the embassy and from the mission who have helped organize and facilitate this meeting.
This is a reception in the aftermath of the U.S. election yesterday. As you know, yesterday, millions of Americans went to the polls to elect Members of Congress. But also Governors, and other state and local officials.
It does look like there will be a change in the balance of power in Congress between our two leading parties.
Elections are central to the expression of the popular will in liberal democracies. Elections can also be polarizing events -- exaggerating the differences between leaders and between parties.
However, at their best, leaders in democracies govern in ways that advance the higher national interest, not just partisan interests. In governing, winning parties have to represent all of their constituents, not just those who backed them. They will have to govern in the name of all of their constituents and they have to have the courage to ask their people to persevere in meeting difficult challenges.
I know that many of you have been following the American election campaign. You know that the effort to help Iraq succeed was a major issue. I’m sure you are wondering what these elections mean for the U.S. policy here in Iraq. Let me just offer the following thoughts.
Americans understand that Iraq is important. They understand that this region is important. They have made great sacrifices for Iraq -- and they want those sacrifices to make a positive difference for Iraq, but particularly for the people of Iraq.
Americans know that Iraq has had decades of tyranny and is now working to develop a multi-ethnic, multi-sectarian representative democracy.
The American people know that this is very difficult. They are concerned about the killing of the innocent on the streets of Baghdad. This bloodshed sometimes causes some, understandably, to wonder whether Iraqis can succeed.
However, it is clear that Americans want Iraq to succeed. They want the Iraqi leaders to make the tough decisions that need to be made to achieve key political and security milestones on which they have agreed. Americans are prepared to continue to support Iraq as Iraqis take the needed steps.
In the coming weeks and months, American leaders will discuss ways that America can encourage Iraqi leaders to take these steps.
The President is the architect of U.S. foreign policy. He is the Commander-in-Chief of our armed forces. He understands what is at stake in Iraq. He sees success as an imperative for America’s national interest. He is committed to working with both Houses of the American Congress to get support needed for the mission in Iraq to succeed.

WEAPONS CACHE DESTROYED NEAR JULAYBAH
BAGHDAD, Iraq – Coalition Forces located and destroyed a terrorist weapons cache early today in Julaybah. Coalition Forces conducted a thorough search of the target area based on intelligence indicating this area was a historical location for al-Qaeda in Iraq leaders to meet and coordinate operations.
Coalition Forces found an extensive weapons cache consisting of 15 cases of anti-aircraft ammunition, improvised explosive device material, rocket-propelled grenades, mortar rounds and improvised rockets. All weapons and associated items were destroyed on-site to prevent further use by terrorists.
The destruction of this cache reduces the ability of the terrorist network to operate and increases the safety of all Iraqi citizens, Iraqi forces and Iraq’s Multi-National partners.
