Iraqi National Police and Coalition Forces conduct joint operations, seize weapons in al Doura 2nd BCT, 1st Cav. Div. PAO
BAGHDAD –
1st Battalion 6th Brigade Iraqi National Police and coalition forces seized several weapons caches during an early-morning operation in the al Doura neighborhood of the Iraqi capital Dec. 8.

The joint operation was conducted based on tips from residents of the neighborhood, leading the police and troops to weapons caches in homes and the al Hassanae’en Mosque.

The police entered the mosque and several homes, seizing a total of four assault rifles, one machine gun, 42 mortar rounds, plastic explosives and assorted bomb-making materials.

Iraqi Forces team up with US forces to reduce violence in Adhamiyah

FORWARD OPERATING BASE LOYALTY, Iraq
– In an effort to reduce sectarian violence and insurgency activities, the Iraqi security forces and Iraqi police are teaming with Soldiers from the 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment (Stryker) to secure Adhamiyah today.

In a coordinated effort dubbed ‘Operation Cougar,’ the Iraqi Security Force and Coalition forces are conducting a cordon-and-clear operation in Adhamiyah early this morning with Iraqi police forces providing perimeter checkpoint security.

This operation is part of a larger on-going effort from the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Defense to establish security for the local residents in eastern Baghdad through the lead efforts of the Iraqi Security Force with over-watch support from Coalition troops.

FORWARD OPERATING BASE LOYALTY, Iraq – Soldiers with the 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment detained 10 suspects and found a weapons cache in Bagdad Dec. 9.

During the morning operation, the unit found one grenade launcher with one round, seven AK-47 rifles with 22 loaded magazines, 3,300 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, two loaded sniper rifle magazines, six primers and one roll of wire. Also recovered were a pair of binoculars and four radios.

The suspects are being held for questioning.

Three Insurgents Killed While Emplacing an IED

CAMP FALLUJAH, Iraq
– Insurgents observed emplacing an improvised explosive device were killed Dec. 8 in Saqlawiyah, west of Baghdad.

Three insurgents were killed and two vehicles were destroyed when Marines assigned to Regimental Combat Team 5 observed insurgents emplacing an improvised explosive device beneath a tractor trailer and a large Bongo truck.

The Marines engaged the insurgents with small-arms fire and destroyed the vehicles with air delivered precision-guided munitions, which triggered multiple secondary explosions.

There were no reports of civilian casualties. No casualties or damage to Coalition Forces were reported. **What a shame that they died that way, had these scum blown themselves up they may have qualified for a Darwin award.

Task Force 4-31 discovers anti-aircraft weapons 2nd BCT, 10th Mountain Div. (LI) Public Affairs
FORWARD OPERATING BASE YUSUFIYAH, Iraq –
Soldiers from 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), discovered a weapons cache containing anti-aircraft weapons south of the Iraqi capital Dec. 9.

The cache included a Soviet-made SA-7 ‘Strella’ surface-to-air missile launcher and components of a 12.7mm anti-aircraft machine gun.

The weapons were in a state of deterioration and appeared to be unusable without significant maintenance.

Operation nets five al-Qaeda suspects

FORWARD OPERATING BASE MAHMUDIYAH, Iraq – Iraqi Army Soldiers, with Coalition
advisors, detained five suspected terrorists; and confiscated a cache of weapons and a
stockpile of al-Qaeda-in-Iraq propaganda near Mahmudiyah Dec.9.

Based on detailed intelligence gathered from previous operations, Iraqi Soldiers from
2nd Battalion, 4th Brigade, 6th Iraqi Army Division, with advisors from Battery A, 2nd Battalion,
15th Field Artillery Regiment., 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, conducted a
raid on a small building complex targeting an improvised-explosive-device cell, believed to be
responsible for several attacks against Coalition and Iraqi security forces.

As the Iraqi Soldiers raided the objective, they detained two individuals and observed three others attempting to escape. The Soldiers pinpointed and detained the three men in a canal.

The troops found two AK-47 assault rifles, a mortar cleaning kit, a shotgun, and a mortar explosive charge following a search of the complex. Also found were, al-Qaeda propaganda
and a series of documents indicating future attacks.

The detainees are being held for questioning.

Operation nets 11 suspects, cache of weapons
2nd BCT, 10th Mtn. Div. PAO

Forward Operating Base Mahmudiyah, Iraq – Iraqi Army Soldiers with coalition advisors detained 11 suspected terrorists and a cache of weapons at approximately noon Dec. 7 near Lutifiyah, Iraq, about 20 miles south of Baghdad.

Soldiers from 1st Battalion, 4th Brigade, 6th Iraqi Army Division with advisors from 2nd Battalion, 15th Field Artillery Regiment., 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, and an Iraqi Army patrol were searching the area based on a tip from locals and discovered components of mortar rounds, two rocket-propelled grenade propellant charges, a 130mm artillery round rigged as an improvised explosive device and two Russian-made rifles.

The detainees were found in nearby residences, and are being held for questioning.

CCCI convicts four insurgents
BAGHDAD, Iraq — The Central Criminal Court of Iraq convicted 4 security detainees from November 24 to 30, for various crimes including illegal possession of special category weapons, failure to renew resident identification and illegal border crossing.

The trial court found an Iraqi man guilty of illegal possession of special category weapons in violation of Coalition Provisional Authority Order 3/2003.
MNF apprehended the defendant after witnessing him transporting weapons across the Tigris River and following him to the roof of a building. MNF found the defendant with two AK-47s, one PKC, one grenade, four AK-47 magazines, 788 PKC rounds and 969 AK-47 rounds. On Nov. 28 the trial panel considered all the evidence and sentenced him to 10 years imprisonment.

The trial court found an Iraqi man guilty of illegal possession of special category weapons in violation of Order3/2003. MNF apprehended the defendant after stopping a vehicle that was traveling toward a checkpoint at a high rate of speed. A search of the defendant’s car revealed two AK-47s and 50 blasting caps. On Nov. 28 the trial panel considered all the evidence and sentenced him to 10 years imprisonment.

The trial court found a Kuwaiti man guilty of possession of illegal border crossing in violation of Article 10 of the Passport Law. MNF apprehended the defendant during a targeted raid to disrupt Anti-Iraqi and Anti-MNF elements. The defendant admitted to entering Iraq to participate in violence. On Nov. 28 the trial panel considered all the evidence and sentenced him to six years imprisonment.

The trial court found a Syrian man guilty of not renewing his resident ID in violation of Revolutionary Command Council Order 1246 of 1983. MNF apprehended the defendant after a raid on the defendant’s home revealed equipment and materials for the production of counterfeit Syrian documents. On Nov. 29 the trial panel considered all the evidence and sentenced the defendant to two years imprisonment.

Since its reorganization, under an amendment to CPA order 13, in April 2004, the Central Criminal Court has held 1,746 trials for Coalition-apprehended insurgents. The proceedings have resulted in the conviction of 1,505 individuals with sentences ranging up to death.

Iraqi National Police, Coalition Forces detain six, seize cache in al-Hadar

Members of the 1st Battalion, 6th Iraqi National Police Brigade and 1st Battalion, 14th Cavalry Regiment seized two weapons caches and detained six men suspected of committing sectarian murders and emplacing roadside bombs in the al-Hadar neighborhood here Dec 10.

The early morning operation began with the establishment of an outer security perimeter by coalition forces while national police entered several homes and the Al Sahaby Mosque in search of the men and possible weapons caches.

The national police seized two weapons caches containing assault rifles, a roadside bomb, a bullet-proof vest, assorted small arms ammunition and bomb-making materials. One of the weapons seized was a rifle fitted with a sniper scope, laser sight and modified to accept a sound suppressor.

The six suspects are being held for further questioning.

Coalition Forces detain 8 in search for murder kidnapping cell leader

Coalition Forces detained eight suspects during operations Dec. 10 in Baghdad to capture the leader of a murder and kidnapping cell. The cell is believed to be responsible for murdering Iraqis in the Adhamiyah district employed by coalition forces. The cell leader is allegedly linked to the al Qaeda in Iraq terror network.

There were no Iraqi civilian, Iraqi forces or Coalition Forces casualties.

IP detain 6 suspected insurgents in raid near Hit

BAGHDAD
– Special Iraqi Police Forces, with Coalition advisors, conducted operations against insurgents Dec. 10 in the village of Khasraj, near Hit, capturing six suspected terrorists.

The area around Kasraj is a known insurgent operating area. Insurgent activities in the area include mortar and other attacks against the Coalition Force, attacks against Iraqis assisting the Coalition Force and criminal activity which funds insurgent operations.

A mosque suspected of being a meeting place for insurgents was entered by Iraqi Police Forces during the operation.
No damage was caused to the mosque during the operation.

There were no Iraqi civilian, Iraqi Force or Coalition Force casualties.

IA detains 4 insurgents in Fallujah raid

BAGHDAD
– 1st Iraqi Army Division forces, with Coalition advisors, conducted operations against insurgent cell leaders Dec. 10 in Fallujah, capturing four suspected terrorists.

The insurgent cells are responsible for improvised explosive device, car-bomb and mortar attacks against members of the Iraqi Security Force and Coalition Force in the area. The suspects are also linked to criminal activity in the area. One of the detained men is suspected of being a weapons smuggler for anti-Iraqi forces operating in and around Fallujah.

There were no Iraqi civilian, Iraqi Force or Coalition Force casualties.

Iraqi troops free 23 kidnap victims

BAGHDAD, Iraq
– Iraqi Soldiers, with the support of coalition forces, found 23 kidnapped
Iraqis during operations in a western neighborhood of the Iraqi capital Dec. 11.

The 4th Battalion, 1st Brigade, 6th Iraqi Army Division team followed a suspicious vehicle during the operation. When it stopped in front of a house, the troops discovered two kidnapped Iraqis in the car. A search of the house revealed another 20 hostages. Company E, 2nd Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment arrived on the scene to assist. An hour later at a nearby checkpoint, the joint patrol observed insurgents in two vehicles as they stopped a bus and tried to abduct the passengers.

The Iraqi Soldiers engaged one of the cars killing one kidnapper and wounding two others. There was an additional hostage in the vehicle’s trunk.

Six suspected kidnappers where arrested. The incidents are still under investigation.

Iraqi Army target terrorists in Baqubah

BAQUBAH, Iraq
– Soldiers from the 2nd Brigade, 5th Iraqi Army, with support from the 1-12 Combined Arms Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division continued to successfully clear Baqubah of terrorists during ongoing coordinated operations Dec. 10.

Throughout the operation, 2/5 IA searched several houses; detaining thirteen suspected terrorists, discovering three motorcycle IEDs and four additional IEDs emplaced along a canal road.

“The 2nd Brigade, 5th Iraqi Army Division, while conducting operations in the Buhriz area of Baqubah, proved again that there is no sanctuary for the terrorists and insurgents,” said Lt. Col. Tim Karcher, 2/5 IA Military Transition Team commander.

“During Iraqi Army operations, the army provides security for the people and detains any terrorists living amongst the people.”

The motorcycles were in the process of being converted to IEDs. The Iraqi Army soldiers dismantled the MBIEDs and transferred the parts, including the motorcycles. Coalition explosive ordinance disposal units destroyed the
four other IEDs.

The detainees were taken to coalition forces base for questioning.

“All the enemy wants to do is to bring destruction and instability to the people, but with the help of the people, we can bring security and stability to any region of Diyala,” Karcher said.

The operation was part of an ongoing mission to bring peace and stability to the people of Baqubah, eliminating anti-Iraqi forces within the region responsible for IED emplacement, kidnappings and murders.

ISF Captures Illegal Armed Group Cell Leader - UPDATE

BAGHDAD
– 8th Iraqi Army division forces, with the assistance of coalition advisers, detained the head of the Al Kut Office of the Martyr Sadr on Dec. 9, for alleged involvement in illegal arms smuggling activities and directing attacks against Iraqi Security Forces in the area.

Based on credible intelligence, he was detained by Iraqi forces because he allegedly orders his followers to conduct indirect fire attacks and place improvised explosive devices in Al Kut and An Numaniyah targeting Iraqi and Coalition Forces. He is also suspected of approving an ambush carried out against an Iraqi Army patrol on Sept. 11, 2006.

Iraqi Army forces cordoned and entered the OMS and several adjacent buildings to detain the suspect and other cell members. The suspect was found in the OMS building along with IED making components consisting of an artillery projectile, 2 rocket propelled grenades, hand grenades, blasting caps and propellant charges for mortar rounds.

Also found were 2 assault rifles, 17 rifle magazines, night vision goggles, a video camera, tactical vests, cell phones and a hand-held two-way radio

Five doors were damaged by Iraqi forces when entering the buildings. No other damage was caused by Iraqi or Coalition Forces to the OMS or surrounding area. Iraqi forces exchanged small arms fire with hostile elements, slightly wounding one enemyfighter. The fighter was treated by medical personnel on-site and detained along withthree additional armed suspects. There were no Iraqi forces or Coalition Forces casualties. There were no reports of civilian casualties.

Iraqi Forces are making progress bringing stability and security to Iraq. The results of this operation reduce the ability of illegal armed elements to operate, and increases the safety of all Iraqi civilians and Iraqi Security Forces.

Coalition Forces kill three terrorists, detain one following gunfights in Rasheed

BAGHDAD
– Soldiers from the 1st Battalion, 18th Infantry, currently attached to the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, killed three terrorists and detained a fourth following two attacks on coalition forces in the capital mid-morning on Dec. 10.

The first terrorist was killed when Soldiers spotted him on a rooftop aiming a rocket propelled grenade at the patrol in the Furat neighborhood.

The second attack began with small arms fire on a coalition patrol in the Bayaa neighborhood. The patrol engaged a small group of terrorists, killing two and wounding one. The wounded man was evacuated for further medical treatment.

A total of three assault rifles and a rocket propelled grenade launcher were recovered from the two attacks.

The wounded man is being detained for further questioning.

Ramadi police battle insurgent ambush

CAMP FALLUJAH, Iraq – Iraqi Police in western Ramadi fought through an ambush
and cleared three buildings Sunday.

More than forty Iraqi police responded quickly to reports of kidnappings of university students by Al Qaeda insurgents in the notorious Tameen neighborhood. As the police force approached, insurgents attacked them with rocket-propelled grenade and small arms fire from three buildings.

The police exchanged gunfire with the insurgents and entered the buildings, searching them from room to room. An Iraqi Army patrol responded to the policemen’s call for back-up and joined the firefight against the insurgents. Coalition Forces also responded to the call for back-up and assisted with security in the area.

The police, based out of the Al Huriyah Station, searched and secured the buildings themselves while Coalition Forces provided security. The fight lasted for three hours.

An Iraqi Policeman was killed in action and four civilians were wounded in the crossfire. The wounded were evacuated to the nearest Coalition medical center. The Iraqi Police detained 26 suspected insurgents and returned to their posts in the city.

In Hit, Iraq, three Iraqi civilians were wounded by crossfire Monday when insurgents attacked Coalition and Iraqi Security Forces near a hospital. All three wounded civilians were initially treated by Coalition Forces. Follow-on treatment was provided at the hospital.

In Julaybai, Iraq, four insurgents were killed after attacking Marines from Regimental Combat Team 5 Tuesday.

The house from which the insurgents were fighting was destroyed by precision munitions.

There were no reports of civilian or Coalition Forces casualties. Elsewhere in western Al Anbar Province U.S. Marines also with Regimental Combat Team 7 discovered several large weapons and munitions caches this weekend.

Two large caches were discovered during various Coalition and Iraqi Security Forces clearing operations in the Haditha “Triad” region – a populated area with 80,000 residents, consisting of three co-located cities along the Euphrates River in western Anbar Province – Haditha, Barwanah, and Haqlaniyah.

All five caches contained a variety of ammunition, munitions and improvised explosive device-making materials, to include rocket-propelled grenades, bullets, mortars, mortar fuses, machine guns and various rifle scopes, among other items.

Two of the caches were discovered Saturday by U.S. Marines on a patrol in Haqlaniyah. Of the two, the largest cache – 200 meters in length – is one of the largest caches Coalition Forces have discovered in western Al Anbar Province in the past year.

Two more smaller caches were discovered Sunday, both also in Haqlaniyah. The fifth cache was discovered Monday in Haditha. The following were discovered in two separate cache discoveries Saturday:

RCT-7 is the Coalition Forces unit responsible for providing security and mentoring Iraqi Security Forces in western Al Anbar Province, an area more than 30,000 square miles in size which stretches from the Jordanian and Syrian borders, hundreds of miles east to Hit, a city located about 35 miles northwest of Ramadi.

Six suspected terrorists detained; weapons cache found

BAGHDAD, Iraq
– Coalition Forces detained six suspected terrorists and seized a weapons cache Wednesday morning near Tikrit while seeking a terrorist associated with the al-Qaida in Iraq network.Intelligence reports also indicated the production of improvised explosive devices was also taking place in the targeted area.

When ground forces searched the targeted building, they discovered a weapons cache consisting of machine guns, pistols, rocket-propelled grenade boosters and a sniper rifle scope. Ground forces also found the equivalent of more than $200,000 in Iraqi Dinar along with more than $160,000 in U.S. currency.

Iraqi Army Finds Multiple Car Bombs

BAGHDAD, Iraq
– An Iraqi Army patrol accompanied by Coalition Forces, discovered three-vehicle borne improvised explosive devices emplaced in the Mansour district of western Baghdad Dec 12.

Soldiers of 2nd Battalion, 1st Brigade, 6th Iraqi Army Division teamed with troops from 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 1st Infantry Division were searching a building when they found one vehicle and two motorcycle bombs. They also discovered additional vehicle bomb making materials and five rifles.

An explosive ordinance disposal team was called and disabled the bombs in place.

This incident is still under investigation.

Iraqi Army arrests five suspects in Rusafa
2nd BCT, 2nd Inf. Div. Public Affairs
FORWARD OPERATING BASE LOYALTY, Iraq – Troops from 2nd Battalion, 6th Iraqi Army Division arrested five suspected terrorists for criminal activity near the New Pharmacy College in the eastern Baghdad neighborhood of Rusafa Dec. 11.

The 2-6 IA was sent out to investigate the report of a kidnapping of several university students. During their patrol, they spotted five men engaged in illegal activity at the university. Members of the patrol detained the five suspects.

The men were armed with five pistols and 65 rounds of ammunition. The men also had four fake university police badges. The detainees said they were university police, but were spotted carrying weapons and the car they were using had Unbar license plates.

Coalition Forces use a precision guided munition to destroy insurgent position

CAMP FALLUJAH, Iraq
– Coalition Forces used a precision guided munition to destroy a building from which insurgents used to fight Wednesday in Ramadi.

Coalition Forces were attacked by small arms fire from insurgents in a building and returned fire. When the attack did not cease, Coalition Forces used a precision guided munition to destroy the building. Two insurgents were killed.

There were no reports of civilian casualties and no Coalition casualties.

Paratroopers find cache south of Baghdad

FORWARD OPERATING BASE KALSU, Iraq – Paratroopers from Company B, 3rd Battalion, 509th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division found a cache near Yahya al Hindawi, south of Baghdad, Dec. 14.

The cache consisted of 16 .50-caliber casings, nine AK-47 magazines with 7.62 rounds, one hand grenade, three trucks, two large caliber rounds, an ammunition can with 7.62 rounds and 295,000 Iraqi dinar.

The unit secured the cache, taking it back to their base camp for further analysis by an explosive ordnance detachment.

Paratroopers find cache, detain three

-- Paratroopers from Troop C, 1st Squadron, 40th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, found a weapons cache and detained three suspected insurgents during a raid conducted south of Baghdad Dec. 15.

The cache consisted of two AK- 47s, three cellular phones, eight rocket-propelled grenades, AK-47 ammunition and magazines, two $100 bills, a hand gun, two 105mm artillery rounds and other improvised explosive device-making materials.

The cache was secured by the paratroopers and transported back to their base camp for further analysis. The suspects are being held for questioning.

ISP Capture Insurgent Cell Leader

BAGHDAD
– Special Iraqi Police forces, with coalition advisors, captured the suspected leader of an insurgent cell during operations Dec. 14 in eastern Mosul. The cell is responsible for multiple attacks against Iraqi security forces in the area. The suspect is allegedly directly responsible for the murder of at least one Iraqi Police officer.

Two additional suspects were detained by Iraqi forces during operations.

Minimal damage occurred during operations and there were no Iraqi civilian, Iraqi forces or coalition forces casualties.

ISF Captures Illegal Armed Group Member, Detain Two Others

BAGHDAD
– Special Iraqi Army Forces, with coalition advisors, captured an illegal armed group member during operations Dec. 13 in Baghdad, who is responsible for emplacing improvised explosive devices and manufacturing car bombs to specifically injure and kill Iraqi civilians and Iraqi Army forces.

The illegal armed group member is responsible for the abduction of an Iraqi soldier he held ransom until the soldier’s family paid for his release. The illegal armed group is involved in the abduction and murdering of other Iraqi security forces and Iraqi civilians in Baghdad.

Iraqi forces detained two additional suspects during operations who said a machine gun was located on the roof of a nearby mosque in the Abu Ghuraib area. Iraq security forces entered the mosque and confiscated the weapon. Five automatic assault rifles and a hand gun were also confiscated by Iraqi forces during operations.

There was minimal damage done to the objective. There were no Iraqi civilian, Iraqi forces or Coalition Forces casualties.
