But first off hurrah to the US finding one scumbag that tried to sell arms to terrorists guilty and him now being locked up for a long long time:
British Businessman in U.S. Sentenced: Tried to Sell Shoulder Fired Missiles For Use Against Passenger Planes
13 September 2005: Hemant LAKHANI, 70, a British businessman convicted in April of attempting to smuggle shoulder-fired missiles into the U.S. to terrorists he believed were going to use the missiles to shoot down commercial airliners was sentenced yesterday to 47 years in prison. LAKHANI was arrested in August 2003 at a hotel near Newark Liberty International Airport where he had been meeting with a government informant posing as a representative of a Somali-based terrorist group. According to government sources, LAKHANI planned to arrange the sale of at least 50 additional missiles following the first completed sale. LAKHANI was convicted on all five charges he faced:
Stated Assistant U.S. Attorney Stuart Rabner: "We may see a man who looks like us and dresses like us, but is so morally bankrupt that he plots the death of thousands of people," Federal prosecutors provided evidence that LAKHANI praised Osama bin Laden to undercover FBI agents.
U.S. District Judge Katharine Hayden rejected pleas for leniency from Lakhani and his wife, referring to what she called "overwhelming" evidence of his "reprehensible conduct."
Evidence presented by prosecutors during his trial included a covertly obtained chilling video at the hotel where LAKHANI and the informant met. They are shown with a shoulder-fired missile in a box, and stand by a window overlooking the airport, taking about how the missiles could be used to bring down several commercial airliners at the same time.
LAKHANI did not act alone; co-defendants Yehuda ABRAHAM and Vijay RAJA are scheduled for sentencing later this year, while a third perpetrator – a citizen of India, was deported after cooperating in the prosecution of LAKHANI.
