In less than a week’s time, illegally-imprisoned U.S. Special Forces soldier Jack Idema will be spending his third Christmas behind bars, this in spite of being declared completely innocent of all charges by the Afghan Appeals Court less than six months after his ‘conviction’ in September 2004. During that time, Jack has been: While it’s certainly a testament to his skill and professionalism as a soldier that Jack remains not only alive, but in good spirits, this must be a particularly difficult time of year for him. As most of us get ready to celebrate with friends and family, Jack remains stuck in a prison cell, separated from family and the country he has spent his entire adult life fighting for. Then, of course, there’s Jack’s second-in-command, Captain Brent Bennett. Although Brent is no longer imprisoned, he remains (to use his own words) ‘a man without a country’, denied access to a U.S. passport, contact with his family and the right to return home. And all for what? Not kidnapping or torture — Those charges have already been declared false. No, whichever way you look at this, it’s clear that Jack and Brent’s current plight is entirely down to the fact that they became a political embarrassment to factions within the U.S. State Department; that, and their stubborn refusal to die in one of the many prison ‘riots’ at Pulacharke. That being the case, we really ought to look at the following footage of Jack Idema rescuing children during the Nahrin earthquake of April, 2002: So question: who’s the real political embarrassment? The guy saving children under terrorist fire? Or the sort of nameless State Department official who, in 2004, stated that he/she had NO INTENTION of preventing Idema’s murder at Pulacharke? Happy Christmas, Jack and Brent. Stay safe. So what can we do? Well, anyone reading this with their own blog can sign up for the weekly Free Jack Idema Blogburst by emailing Cao or Rottweiler Puppy for details. I’d urge everyone to do this, as we’re still terribly short on takers. If you want to know more about the story, Cao’s Blog has a large section devoted to Jack Idema. There’s also a timeline here, and, of course, a huge amount of information is available over at SuperPatriots, without whose work none of us would have learned about Jack’s story.
