The people of Brent East must be really proud of their MP, who is learning Gujarati.
Liberal democrat MP, Sarah Teather is using the parliamentary recess to brush up her language skills.
Sarah, who has already had basic lessons in Gujarati, is taking an intensive two week course in Hindi at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS). Spoken Hindi is understood by people from both India and Pakistan
She proudly announces this in the Asian Image magazine, that she is learning the language as a way of communicating with her constituents who it would appear see no reason to learn English and the MP thinks that in order to protect her index linked pension and get in next time she needs to pander to ethnic voting block.
She quotes "It's important that an MP is able to represent and communicate effectively with every single one of their constituents. Lots of people aren't confident about speaking English." - Well that is all very nice dear, but why should they as citizens of the United Kingdom not be expected to speak English?
Then she follows on with this:"If you can speak a little of their language often they will try some of yours in return, which makes it much easier to communicate." - Again that is very decent of them, one would expect that they should speak the native language as part of living in this nation. The message she gives is that you need not fit in, we as a nation will adapt to your ways, your culture and we will change to suit you.
Learning another language is in of itself like learning anything to be praised in the main, however when it comes at the expense of local culture and heritage that is a different issue altogether.
Although it does come down the question of: Are you part of the problem or the solution. Liberal democrat MP, Sarah Teather I suggest is part of the problem.

Thats better. Much more polished.
I notice LV, that you are from Newport. I live in Porthcawl 10 months of the year and was having a beer yesterday with JohnOfGwent who also lives in Newport.
We were thinking about organising a drink for local bloggers and we would use either his van in Pendine or mine in Trecco for a Saturnight out and sleep over. What do you think.

Hi. Just noticed your link to my site so I've returned the good deed.
Something I heard recently on a blog dedicated to denouncing the use of the welsh language before the english at railway stations was a comment 'if they are to use the language of the ethnic majority first shouldn't they be in urdu and gujurati and english last ...?' At the time I thought it was a joke. Reading this proves otherwise.
True enough John, I am awaiting the day when the arsembly decide to announce trains in those languages along with English and Welsh.
