Prison costs double: New Labour can't add up.

**Another day and yet another huge mess from the inept fucking shower that pass themselves off as a government.

Jack Straw was accused last night of misleading MPs after it emerged that the cost of a huge prison building programme is almost double the £1.2 billion figure he gave Parliament.

The costs of providing an extra 10,500 jail spaces, including three “super-prisons” each holding 2,500 inmates, have been estimated at £2.3 billion.

Mr Straw, the Justice Secretary, disclosed the cost of the huge expansion of the prison estate during tough questioning at the Commons Justice Select Committee.

So there you go state one figure say 1.2 billion then later on say that it is going to cost 2.3 billion. A difference of 1.1 billion quid, all money that comes from the hard put upon taxpayers of this land.

Now I know that there are cost over runs on projects, but 1.1 billion fucking quid. Anyone in the business world who ran a project and after giving a quote had the project over run to that level would be out of a job in seconds flat, either that or asked to take early retirement to save the company embarrassment.

But this is the worst part of it, not only is Jack out by over 1 billion pounds but he gave the initial figure just last month. So in the space of one month the difference between what he has stated and reality has jumped by a billion pounds plus.

When he had announced the latest prison building programme last month, he said he had agreed with the Prime Minister for additional funding of £1.2 billion to bring the 10,500 spaces on stream by 2014.

At the select committee he said: “The gross cost is likely to be about £2.3 billion . . .”

Oh and reading the below statement maybe not all the places that Jack Straw announced will end up arriving. So reading that they announce 3, now its up to three prisons. So he is out by 1.1 billion quid in the space of just a month and maybe not all the 10,500 extra places will arrive.

Lord Carter recommended that one superjail be erected by 2012 with a further two by 2014, although Mr Straw announced only that “up to three large Titan prisons” would be built – casting doubt on whether three would be built given the mounting cost of the jail building programme.

**New Labour clowns the lot of them.
