The Work and Pensions Secretary, who is in charge of Whitehall's biggest budget, has still to give a full account of the money raised by his campaign.
The failure leaves the Cabinet minister in breach of electoral law and is a big embarrassment to Gordon Brown who had hoped to use a New Year policy blitz to draw a line under Labour's funding troubles.
Mr Hain admitted late last year that an "administrative error" meant he had not declared a number of donations to his campaign, including £5,000 from Jon Mendelsohn, Labour's chief fundraiser. He subsequently promised a full audit of campaign expenditure.
**As I have said before about this, an this is the truly satisfying bit, is that these people are being caught, hung up on the very laws they themselves brought in to catch Tory MP's.
As I said re Hain before: He is in charge of the Department of Work and Pensions, a department that is running a tv campaign about benefits fraud. To claim an error the first time, well okay that happens, its stupidity but it happens.
Then a week later to admit that he had "forgotten" about others when remembering makes him look more inept. Thick might be a better word, I am not sure if this is a deliberate plan to deceive on his part, in fact I think that he lacks the brain power to deceive in the way that other people in New Labour can, its more a case of his level of stupidity coming to the fore.
Previously Peter "pitchripper" Hain & the dodgy money.
