Jessica Morden MP - Post office closures.

How can you be for something and also against it at the same time. Easy if your Labour MP Jessica Morden, let me explain.

First off we have her opposing the closure of a local post office, very important to the community and the sort of thing we expect local MP's to do. The cynical might suggest votes are at stake but I shall leave that for now.

Here we see from her site the crowing helping to save the Christchurch Road, post office from closure.. See also her speaking in The Commons.

In her comments she thanks the local paper:
...and also to the Argus for its excellent coverage of the campaign.
Well I am not so sure that she will be thanking the Argus any more after they slated her for her decision to back the government and vote against a Conservative motion to halt the closure of post offices.

Yep that's right she wants to save post offices, well a local one but votes against stopping the cull on a national level.

Needless the local paper had some things to say and I have copied the whole thing below:

NEWPORT East MP Jessica Morden defended her decision to back the government and vote against a Conservative motion to halt the closure of post offices.

The Christchurch Road post office, Newport, was handed a reprieve last week when Post Office Ltd decided against initial proposals to make it one of more than 20 earmarked for closure in Gwent.

Letters to the Argus branded Ms Morden a "hypocrite" for giving her public support to saving Christchurch Road and then voting against the motion to halt the closing process of other branches in the House of Commons last Wednesday.

One letter from M.R Mayo read: "No wonder politicians are held in such low esteem. It's what I call being 'two-faced'". - And so I have found the perfect role for Jessica to base her future political future on:

The Roman god Janus, a role model for Jessica Morden MP.

Another, from Carmel Townsend, wife of Newport Liberal Democrat councillor Ed Townsend, said: "It is disgraceful that she should have been seen to back people in their quest to keep this business open, while voting against a Conservative motion to halt the process of closure."

Ms Morden said: "I couldn't back a Conservative motion when they have closed thousands of post offices before and had refused to sign a funding pledge."

WTF? Talk about a fudge answer. Funding is the basic issue here. Should govt step in with our money to save local offices or should Royal Mail axe them - Unless it's in your area of course - and this has nothing to do with previous closures(under the pervious govt.) but closures brought about under this Labour govt.

Ms Morden said she believed Post Office Ltd losing an estimated £4 million a w:eek meant there was no option but to close several offices. - Unless its in your area, then it is and I quote your own words here:

"I'm absolutely delighted the Post Office has listened to the strong case put by local residents and politicians and has reprieved Christchurch Road. Access to other branches is limited and its closure would have left the area without this service and would have put the shop at risk.

Whilst at the same time she also says:

"I understand there are a number of post offices across the country that are losing money and we can't keep open all of these,"
"I was quite clear at the meeting that I did think Christchurch Road was different. It was blooming and has potential to grow.

"We've got to all use post offices more and make sure they're viable."

She said she was "delighted" Christchurch Road had been saved, and added: "I think it's my job as an MP to raise legitimate concerns that constituents have and in this case I was proved right. I am extremely pleased Post Office have changed their minds."

And changing of minds is something that Jessica Morden knows all about being able to both support and oppose post office closures.

Mind you this is an MP who never votes against the government: Link.

Still she reaped the rewards of a loyal party comrade. Jessica was The general secretary of the Wales Labour party when she did her duty and oversaw the removal and interrogation of comrade Ron Davies over his badger spotting moment of madness on Clapham common.

Shortly after this comrade Jessica was chosen from an all women shortlist to stand for the Labour party in Newport in the election.

Since then she has become the PPS(Parliamentary Private Secretary) - a post she later ended and took back again?- for Peter Hain and said very little on Peter's movement of monies.

Still a loyal comrade, she is in favour of ID cards, likes the idea of Parliament not being transparent -well she has not voted for it - and is against investigating the Iraq War started in part by former comrade Tony Blair.

Here we see Chancellor Darling taking time to show Jessica Morden how to read and put across govt disasters as successes....
(2009) update - New Labour rubber-stamp that has never voted against the Government, who was foisted on the people of Newport from an all women shortlist; as a reward for her work in removing Ron "badger" Davies.

She oversaw the show trial on the part of the party.

Jessica Morden claimed £1,068 a month in mortgage interest payments in 2007-08. In the same year put through claims of £1 for cleaning wipes, and £16.82 for pasting table and spoons

She also voted to fuck over the brave Gurkhas, she voted no for allowing them to stay in the UK. Despite them laying their lives down for this land.

Strangely enough Jessica Morden also voted to save local post offices, yet voted with the government to close them.

Worried about local votes? She should be.

Newport deserves better than a rubber stamp.

Popped a wee small comment in the local paper. Both MP's have a right of reply, unlike one I don't over moderate like Pravda on crack.

A true politician that, lying, conniving and weaseling. All straight A's.

The folks at Newport had better watch their backs, once their vote is in and she's back in the job, i wouldn't count on the post office staying open.
