Glasgow South MP Tom Harris made the comment on his website.

His blog said British people "have never been so wealthy".

Opposition politicians said he was out of touch.

Yesterday, Harris apologised for any offence but added: "What I'm saying is everyone is unhappy and it doesn't make any difference how much money they have."

Mr Harris himself supplied no answers to his controversial question, and instead invited readers to respond.

The minister later added a fresh post to the blog, claiming that his comments had been made public by Philip Hammond, the shadow chief secretary to the Treasury. He added: "Seems a shame if ministers and MPs can't provoke a debate about serious subjects without having some headline-chaser making capital out of it."

He now is suggesting that his comments have been misinterpreted (perish the thought).

Though only a pipsqueak junior minister, he enjoys a salary of £92,100. On top of that, he claimed £153,862 in expenses last year. So he is comfortably insulated from the problems that beset most voters.

And there's the rub. Mr Harris may have apologised, but wasn't his clodhopping intervention another example of the chasm between rulers and the ruled?
