New Labour logic: Reward criminals for government failure.

Now does anyone else think this is fucked up?

Labour failed to get enough prisons built to house all the criminals going through the justice system. Okay they managed to stick some 3000+ laws an regulations on the statute books but as for actual prisons forget it.

Now we find that 50,000 criminals have been let out early under the “end-of-custody licence” (ECL) system. A system brought in by one unelected James Gordon Brown, just 2 days after he became PM.

But we are paying them as well. The way the system works (or rather doesn't)is they get out early and are rewarded for being let out early, compensated for "losing free board and lodging".

This story in The Times has the sad details.
Figures released by Straw show the government has so far paid £5.5m for subsistence to make up for the loss of free board and lodging. Prison governors gave out £2.27m directly, while the Department for Work and Pensions paid them a further £3.11m. Straw said the scheme had cost another £429,000 to administer, making a total cost to the taxpayer of nearly £6m...

Under the scheme those serving between four weeks and four years in jail are released up to 18 days early. Since offenders are automatically released after serving half their sentence, this means they can walk free almost three weeks before the halfway point.
Six million quid paid to reward people who commited crimes because HM Govt did not build enough prisons.

Remember what these inept scum said again and again "Tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime." - Make them pay with their jobs come election time.

Now don't forget all the payments made to dead prisoners as part of boosting the postal vote for Labour.
