Figures obtained by the Conservatives show that during December, 35,000 unemployed workers had to wait for more than 17 days before they were paid job seekers' allowance, including nearly 16,000 who waited more than three weeks. The Government's target is 11.5 days.

Andrew Selous, the shadow work and pensions minister who obtained the figures, said that the delays showed that the Government was unable to cope with rising unemployment levels caused by the economic downturn.
