THE blackmarket for Valentine's Day gifts is expanding in Saudi Arabia after religious police ordered shopkeepers to remove any red-coloured items from shelves. Florists in Riyadh told newspaper the Saudi Gazette that religious police visited their shops on Saturday night to warn them against selling any romantic gifts for Valentine’s Day because it was regarded as un-Islamic.
“They gave us warnings and this morning we packed up all the red items and displays,” one florist told the newspaper.
But another florist in the Saudi capital said the ban would see his business succeed on the blackmarket.
“A single rose costs around SR5-7 ($1.45-$2.05) but today the same rose costs SR10 ($2.95) a piece and the price will go up to SR20-30 ($5.90-$8.85) on Valentine's Day,” the florist told the Saudi Gazette.
“Sometimes we deliver the bouquets in the middle of the night or early morning, to avoid suspicion.”
Florists also said the religious police would begin raiding shops and confiscating any romantic gifts on the day.
Saudi authorities consider Valentine’s Day to be an un-Islamic celebration of relationships between men and women.
One of the nation’s leading Islamic scholars, Sheikh Khaled Al-Dossari, said anyone celebrating the day would be committing a sin.
**Maybe someone should advise Dr Rowan Williams the Archbishop of Canterbury who is under the wooley headed illusion that Sharia law has to be brought into UK law.
