The video for the hugely unpopular 2012 Olympics logo which triggered at least 22 epileptic fits was a "catastrophic mistake", London Mayor Ken Livingstone has said.

Mr Livingstone, whose support for the Games is crucial to their success, pulled no punches when he made clear his disgust at the way the logo's launch was handled.

He said the firm which made the film should "not be paid a penny".

It emerged that the Olympic Committee had feared the film - featuring flashing lights and psychedelic colours - might cause seizures, and even put up warning signs at the official launch in London as a precaution.

Yet the committee, headed by Lord Coe, put the film on the 2012 website and released it to broadcasters, causing serious epileptic fits in several viewers.

Andy Peacher-Finch, 32, from Manchester, who had a major seizure after seeing the footage on TV, said: "I'm angry this film was ever allowed to be shown and I'm disappointed that no one has so far seen fit to apologise."

Epilepsy Action said it had received reports of 22 people having fits while watching the video, with reports of others vomiting and having migraines.

The charity said a seizure could have a "major impact" on epilepsy sufferers' lives, potentially leading to them losing their driving licences.

Mr Livingstone, who reportedly "hates" the graffiti-style logo, said the London-based LIVE agency, which made the film, should not be paid.

"I wouldn't pay them a penny," he said. "Who would go to a firm like that again to ask them to do that work? I mean, this is a pretty basic thing."

Live was paid an undisclosed fee to produce the minute-long video used to launch the 2012 logo, which was designed by brand consultants Wolff Olins at a cost of £400,000.

Epilepsy Action said the number of people affected by the film was "unprecedented".

A spokesman said: "Normally if there is a programme on TV with flashing lights we might get one or two reports of people suffering seizures as a result.

"So far we have received 22 such reports relating to the Olympics film."

The video was withdrawn on Tuesday as the 2012 committee announced an investigation into whether it had breached broadcasting guidelines which state that precautions should be taken to ensure footage does not trigger photosensitive epilepsy.

Broadcasting watchdog Ofcom said it was investigating several complaints that TV channels had breached its guidelines.

The backlash against the logo itself reached new heights, with 45,000 signing an online petition calling for the "ridiculous" emblem to be scrapped.

But former Olympic gold medallist Lord Coe, who is colour-blind, stood by the "edgy" and "flexible" design, which comes in bright shades of pink, orange, green and blue.

The London Olympic Games Organising Committee, or Logoc, said ditching the design was "not an option".

It will now re-edit the launch video, removing a five-second excerpt of a diver jumping into a pool which explodes in ripples of flashing bright colours.

Logoc will consult Epilepsy Action before putting any reworked version of the film on its website.

Since being deployed to the Diyala province of Iraq in November 2006, Col. David Sutherland, along with brigade Chaplain Maj. Charlie Fenton, pictured on the right, has made it a point to visit every wounded soldier and say goodbye to each and everyone of his men who've lost their life.

Four of his soldiers died on one day in April 2007 and the bad news arrived at his office in waves -- a knock on the door, a note handed in by an aide, heads bowed, knowing glances exchanged. Aides say Sutherland walks to the mortuary affairs tent at his base and embraces the dead bodies of his men. "I hug all my fallen soldiers", said Sutherland. "They are my own".

The Ministry of Defence has decreed they could offend the RAF's female personnel.

Officials admitted they had no record of any complaints from the 5,400 women in the RAF.

But commanders are erring firmly on the side of caution and "nose art", as it is known, has been consigned to the history books.

Critics said the MoD should be focusing on more important issues - such as the quality and quantity of equipment available to British forces sent off to war.

Nose art first appeared on warplanes during the First World War and enjoyed a golden age during the Second World War when thousands of American fighters and bombers were decorated with pictures of glamorous women.
Military commanders tolerated the practice as a morale booster....

The decision to ban the images followed a visit by glamour models to southern Afghanistan before Christmas. During the trip they signed paintings of themselves on RAF aircraft.

Commanders decided the images were sexist and insisted there was no place for them in the modern armed forces.


There was also concern that they could cause offence in a muslim country where until 2001 all women were forced to wear the head-to-toe burkha in public.

**One has to think the irony of that is lost on the top brass. Our planes are bombing taliban terrorists and they remove pictures that may cause offense to moslems.

Another sad day as free expression is banned for fear of causing offense, when the pen pushers can tick another box on the "correctness measure" form. Another part of our heritage consigned to the history books.

Following MSM’s coverage of the case of illegally-imprisoned US Special Forces soldier Jack Idema can be an infuriating experience.

Usually, the cause of annoyance is the way in which journalists studiously ignore the fact that a US citizen has been imprisoned illegally by agents of his own state for more than two years. Occasionally, however, these long periods of silence are punctuated by the kind profoundly misleading journalism that Big Media drones always resort to when forced to write about the Idema case.
Thus:

An American citizen imprisoned in Afghanistan for running a private jail for terror suspects has a new passport. His dog has been vaccinated for overseas travel. But two months after being freed by presidential decree, Jack Idema remains in his Afghan cell.

Technically, all of this is true. Jack was, indeed, imprisoned for running a private jail, and he was, indeed, freed by Presidential decree earlier this year. Only, what the AP’s Jason Straziuso fails to point out is that Jack and his men were cleared of all charges on appeal in March 2005. So. Not only does this mean that Straziuso is missing the very important ‘falsely’ qualification to his use of ‘imprisoned’, but that he also fails to ponder the question of why it took Karzai a full, two years to get around to ordering Jack’s release.

Then there’s this:They [the reasons Jack remains in jail] also involve documents that Idema says would finally prove his claim that he was a hired mercenary hunting al-Qaida suspects on a mission sanctioned by U.S. counterterrorism officials — a claim that American authorities have denied.
Now, let’s be quite clear about this:


Jack Idema has never claimed to be a mercenary — Quite the opposite, he has always denied receiving even one dollar from a foreign power. Moreover, whether or not the State Department choose to deny the fact that Jack and his team worked for the US is quite beside the point — Way back in September 2004, evidence produced by Jack forced them to admit to accepting prisoners from him.
Straziuso save the best for last:

Another issue has been compensation demanded by one of the men Idema held in his prison. The man, a senior judge called Sadiq, had originally wanted US$13,000 (€9,700) in compensation, but told the AP that he gave Idema a letter on Friday forgiving him. “Because I’m an Afghan Muslim, I forgive all these things,” said Sadiq, who goes by one name. “I’m not his enemy, he’s not my enemy.”

Obviously, this attempt to portray Sidiq as the kindly, forgiving type might be a little trickier to pull-off if Straziuso actually stirred himself to mention the fact that, at the time Jack’s team arrested him, the ‘forgiving Afghan’ in question was in possession of explosive detonators, Hezb-i-Islami membership cards and a letter of introduction from Mullah Omar. It might also strike the AP’s readership as more than a little odd that Sidiq feels the need to ‘forgive’ Jack at all — He is, after all, on record as stating that the allegations of torture against Idema were fabricated and that, far from Jack stringing captive Afghans up in a (non-existent) basement, “there was no torture, we never saw, not beating, not slapping, not even a pinch. NOTHING”.

Then again, it’s to be assumed that the effectiveness of sneering hit-pieces like this one will always increase in direct proportion to the number of facts they either distort or omit.

According to this story in the Times, (hat tip to Devils Kitchen for that) it would appear that the humble wine drinker is next in line for the states control. The concept of free choice is one that is vanishing fast from Cool Britania.

• Middle-class wine drinkers will be the focus of government plans to make drunkenness as socially unacceptable as smoking.
• Under the plans published today, a fresh audit is to be conducted by the Government into the overall costs of alcohol abuse to society and the National Health Service.
• “We want to target older drinkers, those that are maybe drinking one or two bottles of wine at home each evening,” a Whitehall source said. “They do not realise the damage they are doing to their health and that they risk developing liver disease. We are not talking here about the traditional wino.”

Well thats nice of them to decide who drinks what, when and where. They forget that we all pay into the healthcare through our taxes, that we also pay through the massive duties imposed on drinks here in the UK.

But they don't just stop there, oh no. Recently there has been calls for higher duty of drinks, all in the name of public health of course. Nothing, I mean nothing to do with filling the coffers of a certain Mr Brown and plugging some large holes in his dubious accounting preocedures.

Then we had the call to ban special offers, you know the sort of thing. Pick up a bottle of Albanian anti-freeze and get another for the same price. Now if Mr Newsagent wants to sell off some booze and make a few sheckels profit all well and good, the state has no place in attempting to micro manage our lives to that extent.

What I and other people choose to spend their money on(that is small amount left after paying the 100 billion stealth taxes imposed by that bloody dour Scot Gordon) is their affair, not the states.

  years’ time as smoking or drink-driving is today.

Yep and they shall fine and micro manage our lives to create their "Cool Britania" no matter what. Oh and they have the backing of the BMA, now this makes me chuckle as most doctors I know like a drink or twelve.

But the British Medical Association said yesterday that such measures did not go
far enough, adding that customers in licensed premises needed better information
to raise awareness of the dangers of excessive drinking and drink-driving.Vivienne Nathanson, the head of science and ethics at the BMA, said: “It is not the nanny state. It is about informed choices.

It is hard for the average person to work out how many units are in a drink these days. Glasses of wine are much larger than they used to be and many beers and wines are much stronger”.

Well I hate to correct the learned gentleman but he is wrong, the controls and displays on beer/wine and spirits are just fine thank you very much. The bottles show how many units there are and it is not rocket science as to working out how many you are allowed. Also the information is easily found if one does a simple Google search, something that the wise bods at the BMA think we are unable to do.

As for drink driving well that is a seperate issue and I shall leave that for now. My view is that anyone who drink drives should lose their license and car. On the point of beers and wine glasses being larger and/or stronger, well thats called consumer choice, if someone chooses to drink some Albanian 7.5% falling down water then thats upto them. Same as if they choose to drink the weakest girly larger on display.

Lastly and I hate to bang on about this but they are also planning curbs on glasses, if our police who have taken on the role of nanny as well as police. They are trying for a blanket ban on glass, which will be replaced with dire plastic, easy crack, fold in half, just as dangerous as real glass rubbish.

If people want to learn about beer(blatant plug warning here folks) then they could always join Camra. At £22 quid for a year it is a damn site cheaper than any plan by the nannys of New Labours fascist state. They are running a campaign for full pints, another thing that Blair promised but failed to deliver on and are against a blanket ban on shit plastic glasses. One has to ask why this is just beer glasses, after all would the middle classes with their glass of wine or port like to drink it out of a plastic glass, or are the police and health & safty brigade blaming the lower class plebs? Why should the majority of drinkers who would never dream of violence have to suffer for the sins of a few larger fueled chavscum?

• We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to oppose calls by police to introduce blanket use of plastic glasses even in pubs and other licensed premises with no history of violence. We feel blanket bans on glass are unnecessary and will have a detrimental effect on the licensed trade and the drinking experience of the millions of law-abiding pub goers in well run establishments up and down the country.

On this day in 2004, Ronald Wilson Reagan, the 40th president of the United States, dies, after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. Reagan, who was also a well-known actor and served as governor of California, was a popular president known for restoring American confidence after the problems of the 1970s and helping to defeat communism.

Born on February 6, 1911, Reagan, who was nicknamed “Dutch” as a youngster, was born and raised in several small towns in Illinois. Despite a disadvantaged upbringing—his father abused alcohol and had trouble holding jobs—Reagan was a popular and outgoing student. He served as president of his high school’s student council and stood out at football, basketball, and track, as well as acting in several plays. During the summer, he worked as a lifeguard, reportedly saving 77 people over six years.

After high school, Reagan enrolled at Eureka College, a small, Christian, liberal-arts school in Eureka, Illinois, from which he received a scholarship. There, he continued to show athletic prowess, playing football and swimming, as well as honing his skills in his two future pursuits: acting and politics. Reagan—then a Democrat--served as Eureka’s student-body president and acted in the college’s theater productions.

In 1932, Reagan graduated from Eureka with a degree in sociology and economics and found a job as a radio sports announcer. He worked in radio for five years, before going for a screen test in Los Angeles while in California to cover the Chicago Cubs’ spring-training camp. Warner Brothers offered the future president a seven-year contract, but asked him to use his given name “Ronald” instead of “Dutch” in the movies.

Although he never became an “A-list” star, Reagan spent 20 years in Hollywood and appeared in more than 50 films and several television programs. His oft-used nickname as president, “The Gipper,” came from his turn playing Notre Dame football star George “The Gipper” Gipp in the 1940 film Knute Rockne: All American. In 1940, Reagan married actress Jane Wyman. The couple had two children: Maureen, in 1941, and Michael, whom they adopted in 1945. Reagan and Wyman divorced in 1949.

Although Reagan did not serve combat duty in World War II because of his poor eyesight, he began active duty in 1942 and made training films for the military until his discharge in 1945. Politically, it was during the 1940s that Reagan gradually became more conservative and also became involved in the country’s burgeoning anti-communist movement. In 1947, he testified to the controversial House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC), naming elements in Hollywood that he felt were allied with communist causes. Later that year, he was elected president of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG), a position he held from 1947 to 1952 and again from 1959 to 1960.

Through the course of his work with SAG, Reagan met Nancy Davis, an actress who looked to Reagan for help when she was incorrectly labeled a communist sympathizer. As he had done for others, Reagan assisted her in clearing her name. The couple also began a lifelong romance and was married in 1952. Their two children, Patricia and Ronald, were born in 1953 and 1959 respectively.

After registering as a Republican in 1962 and campaigning for Barry Goldwater in his failed 1964 presidential campaign, Reagan decided to run for governor of California in 1966. He won handily, despite his lack of experience. His plan for California foreshadowed the one he ultimately brought with him to the national stage: lower taxes, cuts in spending, and an end to big government. Despite the student protests and forced tax hikes that occurred during his first term, he ran again and was easily re-elected in 1970. Just 18 months later, he announced his unsuccessful candidacy for president at the Republican National Convention. In 1975, he left office in California and ran again for the Republican presidential nomination, losing in a close race to Gerald Ford.

In 1980, Reagan ran yet again and won the nomination easily, choosing George H.W. Bush as his running mate. Running on a platform of a return to American values, smaller government, a stronger military, and tax cuts, Reagan appealed to an American public frustrated with inflation and foreign policy problems, like the Iranian hostage crisis. He won, and at age 69, became the oldest man to be elected to the office. A talented and practiced public speaker, Reagan’s personal charm, warm manner, and optimistic message endeared him to many Americans. He was re-elected by a landslide in 1984.

Just 69 days after taking office, Ronald Reagan was shot by John Hinckley after giving a speech at a hotel about one mile from the White House. After surgery to remove the bullet, which had lodged near his heart, he recovered quickly, which added to his image as a strong leader. Throughout his two terms in office, Reagan pursued his trademark economic program, “Reaganomics”—a supply-side economics theory that involved drastic cuts to both taxes and spending. At the time, and increasingly in the intervening years since his presidency, Reagan drew criticism for ruthlessly slashing social programs while building up a huge deficit with massive military expenditures. He is also criticized for his partiality to business interests, removing many regulations on big business that he felt were impeding growth, as well as authorizing the firing of striking air-traffic controllers in 1981.

It was his campaign to end the Cold War, though, that defined the Reagan presidency for many Americans. His plan was to use an unprecedented military buildup to negotiate arms-reduction treaties from a position of strength. During a visit to Germany, he famously urged then-Soviet Premier Mikhail Gorbachev to “tear down that wall.” By 1991, the Berlin Wall was torn down and the Soviet Union Reagan had once referred to as an “evil empire” was no more. While many credit Reagan for this historic turn of events, and it is certain he played a significant role, others point to internal problems in the Soviet Union for its ultimate demise.

Reagan’s foreign policy included military interventions in Lebanon, Grenada and Libya, which had mixed results. He is also known for backing anti-communist rebels in Nicaragua and authorizing a secret CIA military operation there in the early 1980s. This led to the Iran-Contra scandal, in which it was found that illegal arms sales to Iran were used to fund the administration’s support of Nicaragua’s Contra rebels. No evidence was ever found to suggest that Reagan himself or Vice President Bush broke the law. Despite the scandal, George H.W. Bush succeeded Reagan to the presidency in 1988.

Known as the “Great Communicator,” Reagan left the Oval Office as one of the most popular presidents in history, retiring to his much-loved California ranch, Rancho del Cielo. His announcement in 1994 that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease was greeted with great sadness by many across the country. He wrote, in an open letter to the American people, “I now begin the journey that will lead me into the sunset of my life. I know that for America there will always be a bright dawn ahead.”

He lived out the rest of his days on the ranch, with his wife Nancy, who remained devoted to him to the end, by his side. He was buried at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California.

Global warming on Neptune’s moon Triton as well as Jupiter and Pluto, and now Mars has some scratching their heads over what could possibly be in common with the warming of all these planets.

In a study recently published in Geophysical Research Letters, H.B. Hammel of the Space Science Institute in Boulder, Colo., and G.W. Lockwood of Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Ariz., found that Neptune’s brightness appears to correlate with temperature changes on Earth. They also noted that Neptune’s temperature warmed from 1980 to 2004.

“If changing brightnesses and temperatures of two different planets are correlated, then some planetary climate changes may be due to variations in the solar system environment,” they write in their abstract.

"You know the old saying: No news is good news. But in the news business, it is just the opposite: Good news is no news - which is why you have been hearing so little from Afghanistan recently.

"Iraq has been grabbing the headlines. Even the most confirmed optimist would find it hard to see a ray of light there today. But there is a growing body of evidence that things are beginning to improve in Afghanistan. To see why, you need to travel around Afghanistan a bit. That's something the media find hard to do in Iraq now - many news crews rarely venture out of their hotels in Baghdad."

Not letting the media off the hook, we also need to understand the good news limitations in the Afghani context. An isolated, poor, largely rural country with harsh landscapes and limited natural resources, Afghanistan has been for the past quarter of a century cursed with constant violence and oppression. Good news from Afghanistan will not in any foreseeable future mean mushrooming shopping malls and health care clinics in every village. But for the people who have suffered so much, relative peace and an absence of theocracy are a good start.

Still, here are some recent stories from Afghanistan that you might have missed:

DEMOCRACY: Democratic elections are still set to take place in the second half of the year. Says President Hamid Karzai: ""Having promised the Afghan people elections in the month of September and having had this remarkable success with the registration of voters we must go and we should go for elections in September."

Furthermore, "This fall's parliamentary and presidential elections will be the first time women have ever voted or even registered to vote in Afghanistan." Read the whole article on the challenges of registering women to vote in this very conservative society. There is also this help for Afghanistan's fledgling justice system: "A New Hampshire lawyer will share his experiences working as the head of the state's public defender program with lawyers in Afghanistan. On Friday, Michael Skibbie leaves to spend two months in Afghanistan to train six lawyers."

Last but not least, the pride in national armed forces:

"To cheers and applause, hundreds of troops from Afghanistan's fledgling national army took up positions on Thursday in the capital of a remote province overrun by a renegade commander a week ago. The green-bereted soldiers [were] sent to the central province of Ghor from neighboring Herat to reassert central government authority."

Fortunately other feminists do get it:

"Visionary educator Sakena Yacoobi and the Afghan Institute of Learning (AIL) have been selected by an international panel of experts to receive the 2004 Women's Rights Prize of the Peter Gruber Foundation. Professor Yacoobi is President of AIL, which she founded and leads and which serves more than 350,000 Afghan women and children annually."

Children are returning to normal life, too:

"Some 2,200 child soldiers have been demobilized under a programme to reintegrate the young combatants back into Afghan society, the UN Children's Fund said Thursday. The programme began in February and is working in eight provinces, helping boys aged 14 to 18 who once fought or worked as porters and cooks for private militia armies. According to the UN Children's Fund, or UNICEF, which coordinates the rehabilitation effort, there are about 8,000 former child soldiers in Afghanistan, a country recovering after a quarter century of war. Many of them left their units informally during the past year. The programme aims to demobilize about 5,000 young soldiers across northern and central Afghanistan by the year's end. They are offered education and skills training to help them take up a peaceful life in their communities."

"They have no money. They are in a foreign land whose language they do not speak. They rely on a Greek woman who has brought them to this town on the Aegean Sea island of Lesvos. Their destination is the Athens Games.

"This is the first Afghan Olympic team since the 1996 Atlanta Games, and the first to include women. The athletes are doing everything possible on a meager budget to perform respectably for the Aug. 13-29 games.

" 'The winning and losing is not important for me,' said Friba Razayee, 18, who will compete in judo. 'The world is preparing four years for the Olympic Games. We are preparing three months ... but we will try our best"."

Staying with sports news, the Kabul Golf Club is open for business:

"The fairways were once minefields. Drought has dried up the water hazards. And the greens, made of oily sand, are called 'browns.' Augusta National it's not.

"Nonetheless, even duffers draw fawning galleries at the Kabul Golf Club, which reopened this spring as Afghanistan's only course after being shuttered for more than two decades because of war and political violence.

"Unfamiliar with the sport, many Afghans crowd around as foreigners tee off at the first hole, a 371-yard par 4 that skirts a bombed-out military barrack."

Among them, maybe Afghanistan's very own future Tiger Woods.

DEVELOPMENT: Not in itself good news, as the process tends to create its own problems, but Afghanistan is starting to undergo rapid urbanisation:

"Although largely a rural nation, Afghanistan's urban development is now proceeding faster than ever with reconstruction and rehabilitation well under way. It is estimated that by the year 2045 the country's urban population will have surpassed that living in rural areas, which currently accounts for 80 percent of the total.

"The rapid rise in the urban population, along with the return of refugees from Iran, Pakistan and other countries, is a major concern for both the Afghan government and international organisations. Since the fall of the Taliban regime the population of Kabul city has risen from 700,000 to three million."

Meanwhile, the World Bank is providing a long-term loan of $105 million to assist in developing Afghanistan's electricity network. The private arm of the World Bank, the International Finance Corp is also investing $7 million with the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development "to help restore and expand the Kabul Hotel."

Qatar, meanwhile, will construct "10,000 housing units in Afghanistan to rehabilitate war-driven refugees returning home, aside from constructing a central police headquarters building in Kabul, two building blocks at Kabul international airport and several health centres across the country." Qatar has already spent $40 million to help the reconstruction of Afghanistan.

This contribution from Pakistan: "Former Finance Minister Shaukat Aziz has said the government will start construction work on industrial estate project in Jalalabad city of Afghanistan with the cost of on billion dollars." The trade between the two countries currently stands at $500 million a year and is expected to double by the end of next year. And two Iranian banking institutions are planning to open the first Iranian bank in Afghanistan, in addition to British, Dutch and Pakistani banks already working there.

Speaking of infrastructure, Pakistan is planning to build a railway link to Afghanistan, extending from Chaman in Pakistan to Kandahar. And then there is this road project:

"The only time any previous Afghan government paid attention to the villagers of Khanan was to conscript its men or loot its homes. The current construction of a 10-kilometre road at a cost of $25,000 (U.S.) is the first help of any sort that residents can remember coming from Kabul. The road is part of Afghanistan's most ambitious reconstruction project, a plan to distribute $700-million worth of assistance to all of its 35,000 villages."

Meanwhile, economic ties are slowly being built: "Australia's Trade Commission says it is working with a small group of companies that are keen to develop exports links into Afghanistan. Austrade's director for south Asia and South-East Asia David Twine says there is still very little trade between Australia and the war-torn country. Mr Twine told an export seminar in Darwin today most of the businesses will focus on the development of facilities and infrastructure." And Afghanistan might acquire soon its very own venture capital fund, "as a former McKinsey & Co. manager tries to raise $50 million as the south Asian country emerges from more than two decades of conflict."

"The Afghanistan Renewal Fund will invest in fledgling construction, food, textiles and furniture manufacturing companies, according to a document for potential backers. The Asian Development Bank said it may commit $12.5 million and CDC Group Plc, a government-owned U.K. company, may put in $5 million."

HUMANITARIAN AID: Read about this fantastic grass-roots efforts in Michigan:

"For Khris Nedam and her Northville sixth-graders, it was a daunting project: Change the fortunes of a poor, drought-ridden village in Afghanistan.

"Six years later, the fruits of their fund raising cause Nedam to smile broadly. The Wonkhai village in Afghanistan has a new school, health clinic, orphanage and community well.

"Near the new, deeper well, villagers planted 1,500 fruit and nut trees to help Wonkhai weather famine brought on by droughts.

"All the projects were paid for by the Kids 4 Afghan Kids program begun by Nedam and her sixth-grade class at the Northville School District's Meads Mill Middle School."

And Camilla Barry, teacher from Marin County, California, is returning to Afghanistan for a second stint in Kabul and Ghanzi.

" 'It was successful beyond my wildest dreams,' said Barry, who finances her trips out of her own pocket and with private donations. She'll be paying her airfare herself, but the schools will provide her with food and housing. Her classes last year, taught with the help of a translator, were so popular that her classrooms were often packed with children."

Meanwhile, nine-year-old Djamshid Djan Popal is flying with his father to Ottawa, Canada, to undergo a life-saving surgery on his defective heart. The boy's trip is sponsored by Saddique Khan, a 41-year old father of four, who works at the Royal Bank of Canada. "My immediate thought was what can I do for this kid. I wanted to help this boy. I was thinking about the pain of his parents. It goes right to the heart," says Khan about his reaction after reading Djamshid's story in a newspaper.

And the Coalition troops are continuing to provide aid, in addition to their military tasks:

"Soldiers from the 2nd Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment recently conducted combat and presence patrols, air assault operations, cordon and searches in the Mizan district of Afghanistan. During Operation Blue Candle, conducted from May 23-31, they also offered humanitarian aid to citizens of numerous communities. Because of the 'Cacti Battalion,' as the 2-35 is known, Mizan now has a doctor, a school and a light at the end of the tunnel."

And Oklahoma's 45th infantry, which organised collections back home to give Afghani children school supplies and deliver gifts to Kabul's orphans. Read also about Prashant Shah

"a Vadodara (Gujarat)-born Lance Corporal with the US Marines, has been decorated with a medal for using his 'extraordinary linguistic skills' to establish a communication link between American troops and Afghan locals. Shah, who serves with the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit, speaks not two or three but six languages - English, Hindi, Punjabi, Gujarati, Urdu and Pashto. His efforts have earned him the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal."

CULTURE: National treasure, known as "the Bactrian gold - 20,600 pieces of gold jewelry, funeral ornaments and personal belongings from 2,000-year-old burial mounds" emerged into the light of day and is now being catalogued with the assistance of the National Geographic Society.

Through the years of civil war and Taliban rule, its existence was kept secret by a handful of unassuming museum and bank workers, even as other priceless pieces of Afghanistan's cultural history were destroyed...

"Afghanistan's first private television station went on air on Sunday in Kabul, some two years after the fall of the Taliban regime which arrested and punished those caught watching TV.

"Afghan TV is funded by an Afghan businessman and will have 18 hours of programming a day. Afghanistan has only ever had one state TV channel which broadcasts for a few hours in the evening, but under the Taliban there were no television stations and it was forbidden to listen to music or watch satellite broadcasts."

Seems that I have rattled someones cage. A certain someone has had to try to justify themselves online on their website. Well simple point is the law found against Mr Flynn(I won't call him by the title MP as he is not fit to sit in the house) and he had to pay up 36 grand in damages.

He had to apologise and that is all that is all that needs to be said. Although from his comments he either meant the apology that he put on his website or he had his fingers crossed at the time and stands by his libelous comments against a respected company and the people who run that company.

In the High Court today (8th November 2005) Paul Flynn MP for Newport West, through his solicitor, apologised unreservedly for the damage caused by allegations he made against Endowment Justice and its Directors.

He also agreed to place an apology on the home page of his website and has agreed not to repeat again the same or similar allegations. He will pay damages of £1000, which Endowment Justice has donated to the NSPCC, and costs of £35,450.

In February of this year Paul Flynn made certain statements about companies providing professional services in relation to endowment policy compensation claims. Despite having spoken to Endowment Justice he linked these libellous allegations to them.

He then repeated the same allegations to a journalist from Money Marketing which published his statements in an article.

Paul Flynn now accepts that these allegations concerning Endowment Justice are completely false.

Marianne Fitzjohn, Director of Endowment Justice commented: "This whole case has been extremely stressful for all of us at Endowment Justice. We set up Endowment Justice to be a champion for people who were getting short shrift from the financial institutions when they have legitimate claims for endowment mis-selling.

"We believe that we have been in the vanguard in trying to ensure that financial institutions behave properly and stop misleading their own clients. We have been in regular contact with the FSA and the FOS concerning the behaviour of both the larger financial institutions and the IFAs who inappropriately sold these endowment policies.

"We have also repeatedly called for the endowment claims companies to be regulated as we recognise that there are examples of bad practice. Endowment claimants should be very discriminating in choosing a company, which can help them in making their claim.

"We repeatedly asked Paul Flynn to apologise and withdraw his comments. Even when we went to law he still simply refused to respond. We reluctantly brought this action to vindicate our reputation, because our reputation and integrity are of paramount important to us and integral to how we run our business.

"We are delighted that the whole matter is now over and are very pleased that it was a term of the settlement that a contribution would be made to charity. The damages will be paid to the NSPCC."

Mr Flynn agreed to pay Endowment Justice's legal costs of pounds 35,450, plus pounds 1,000 in damages, which the company has said it will donate to the NSPCC. The MP will also publish an apology on his website.

Marianne Fitzjohn, a director of Endowment Justice, said the company had been angry about being criticised for sharp practices because it believed it had played a leading role in campaigning against such behaviour. 'We repeatedly asked Paul Flynn to apologise and withdraw his comments,' Ms Fitzjohn said. 'We have also repeatedly called for the endowment claims companies to be regulated as we recognise that there are examples of bad practice.'

**The apology:

On this website in February this year, I made certain statements referring to Endowment Justice Limited, one of the companies which offers assistance in obtaining compensation for those people who were mis-sold endowment policies. I have been campaigning against companies providing professional services in relation to endowment policy compensation claims, but my facts about Endowment Justice were incorrect. As a result, I wrongly accused the company and its directors Nick Keca, Marianne Fitzjohn and Graeme Webber of having previously mis-sold endowment policies and now dishonestly overcharging those self-same victims to help them obtain compensation. I am happy to clarify that neither Endowment Justice Ltd or any of its directors were ever involved in any aspect of endowment policy selling. It was therefore false and unfair to suggest that they had profited from the historic mis-selling of endowment policies. I was also incorrect in stating that Endowment Justice, which offers its services in recovering compensation on a “no-win, no-fee” basis, could charge its customers up to 40% of any compensation gained. Endowment Justice in fact charge customers 17.5% plus VAT or 22.5% plus VAT of any compensation gained. I was wrong to give the unintended impression that the company or its directors acts in any way improperly or unlawfully in providing services to those seeking compensation for endowment policy mis-selling. I would like to apologise to Endowment Justice for my allegations, and to Mr. Keca, Ms. Fitzjohn and Mr. Webber for any embarrassment or distress caused by my false remarks.

The KING has been graciously pleased to approve the award of the VICTORIA CROSS to :-

No. 10119 Rifleman Tullbahadur Pun, 6th Gurkha Rifles, Indian Army.In Burma on June 23rd, 1944, a Battalion of the 6th Gurkha Rifles was ordered to attack the Railway Bridge at Mogaung.

Immediately the attack developed the enemy opened concentrated and sustained cross fire at close range from a position known as the Red House and from a strong bunker position two hundred yards to the left of it.

So intense was this cross fire that both the leading platoons of 'B' Company, one of which was Rifleman Tulbahadur Pun's, were pinned to the ground and the whole of his Section was wiped out with the exception of himself, the Section commander and one other man. The Section commander immediately led the remaining two men in a charge on the Red House but was at once badly wounded. Rifleman Tulbahadur Pun and his remaining companion continued the charge, but the latter too was immediately wounded.

Rifleman Tulbahadur Pun then seized the Bren Gun, and firing from the hip as he went, continued the charge on this heavily bunkered position alone, in the face of the most shattering concentration of automatic fire, directed straight at him. With the dawn coming up behind him, he presented a perfect target to the Japanese. He had to move for thirty yards over open ground, ankle deep in mud, through shell holes and over fallen trees.

Despite these overwhelming odds, he reached the Red House and closed with the Japanese occupants. He killed three and put five more to flight and captured two light machine guns and much ammunition. He then gave accurate supporting fire from the bunker to the remainder of his platoon which enabled them to reach their objective.His outstanding courage and superb gallantry in the face of odds which meant almost certain death were most inspiring to all ranks and beyond praise.

First of all, I would like to express my deep gratitude to the British people for granting me the privilege to come and live amongst them in a country which I have fought for and love. I am overjoyed to learn that I have finally been allowed the right to settle and live in the UK. I could not sleep last night, as I was so happy with the news that Great Britain would be allowing me to come and get the medical treatment which is so lacking for many veteran Gurkhas in Nepal.

I would also like to make it clear that this victory would not have been made possible without the overwhelming and generous support of the Great British Public; my brothers and sisters in arms in the British Armed Forces both past and present; the Gurkha Army Ex-Servicemen's Organisation (GAESO); Joanna Lumley; Jay Miller; the British press and media; and my solicitors Howe & Co . I am humbled by the thousands of emails in support of me and the Gurkhas, that continue to flood into the website set up for me: www.vchero.co.uk .

I have been moved of the accounts of the very many the telephone calls and letters of support sent by those, who like me, do not have access to computers.I will never forget the 45,000 Gurkhas killed in battle fighting along side our British friends, nor will I ever forget my British brothers and sisters who have laid-down their lives fighting alongside the Brigade of Gurkhas in numerous theatres of war over the last 200 years. In life it is the greatest honour to be a Gurkha, because it is the greatest honour to serve the British people and our Brigade. When I come to be with the British people, I will do my best to be a credit to Britain and to help the plight of my fellow Victoria Cross winners who live in poverty in Nepal. It is saddening that so many brave men of my Brigade have to rely on charity to get their basic living and health needs.

I do not ask anything of Britain, or its people, save to help me get a little medical care now that I am old. However, I do have one request for your country, a country which I love so much, and that is to ask if your great country can please look at the plight of my veteran Gurkha comrades in arms, and the injustices they continue to face when asking for their rights to come to Britain and the continuing injustice of unequal pensions for those, like me, who have fought for British freedom against the forces of tyranny but happened to have retired from the British Army before 1997.

I never left any of my comrades on the battlefield, British or Gurkha, and I will not abandon my veteran Gurkha comrades now in their hour of need, when I come to live in Great Britain.From the bottom of my heart, I am deeply touched by the support shown to me by the people of Great Britain, and across the world, and I give you my most solemn thanks.

Got a long weekend of gaming with Medieval Total War 2 planned, shall be getting some beer in later and spending the whole weekend playing this.
