Police were called to the fight at the Moon under Water JD Wetherspoon pub in Bath Road where officers received at least one report of a man kicked in the head.
A witness to the fight, which broke out at 5pm on Saturday, said people were “running for their lives”.
Officers confirmed chairs and furniture were thrown around and a significant amount of damage was done to the pub.
People who were involved in the fighting fled along Bath Road and the High Street when the police arrived, but more than 20 were arrested on suspicion of public order offences.
Some people were still in custody last night, helping police with their inquiries.
Police said it appeared that many of the men involved were football fans from Oxford who had stopped in Cheltenham when a fixture had been postponed.
The duty manager, who didn’t want to be named, confirmed that there had been an incident but said he wasn’t able to give any more details.
Yesterday evening, the pub was open again and there seemed little sign of any damage, except for a crack in the glass front door.

**I wonder how long it will be before the people who started the trouble are allowed back in and those not involved were barred?
Another fun night out in one of Tim Martins chav palaces. Maybe the customer was not happy over getting South American zebu bushmeat rather than proper steak?
